Hi I was late discovering Porcupine Tree about 5 years ago approx. I heard just 3 songs - "Trains" - "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" & "Blackest Eyes" & within two weeks I had bought their entire back catalogue. Every album is brilliant & I was amazed how much their earlier stuff was obviously influenced by Pink Floyd. Truly Prog at it's finest. Boy are you gonna love discovering more....."Arriving Somewhere...." is utterly mind blowing !

I discovered them in 1996, They are my favorite band. Me and a friend drove from Spokane Wa. To Seattle to see the Fear of a Blank Planet Tour. We met Alan White former drummer for Yes at a cafe down the street from the venue before the show. He joined us since he was alone. It was a fantastic night. The Tree was AMAZING. Seen Steve Wilson solo twice since then. Great reaction.

And yes every song is mostly great and few are good. No bad songs from SW. If i was to recommend a song, it would be the full length version of Even Less from the album Recordings. At just over 14 mins it will command your attention throughout. Another great early song would be The Sky Moves Sideways, parts 1 & 2. Keep listening NicknLex.

Sounds like a banjo with a steel stringed guitar in the background ( the intro ). The steel or metal guitar to which you were referring is, I believe, a National. A dulcimer lays flat and can be played with a pick, but is more often played with a sort of wooden hammers. A guy I knew in high school was a dulcimer master.

When I first heard this song, I thought it was inspired by the book "Hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy". I was wrong. There is a KZbin video of a live performance of Porcupine Tree in which Steve Wilson explains that the song is about the religious cult "Heaven's Gate". In fact, the audio of the man saying the song's name was the leader of the cult. And as we know, they all died by poisoning. So the song is much more sinister than even I had imagined.

Two words: COLIN EDWIN. 🤘🤘 Such an underrated bassist; his playing makes the song for me. PT also would not be the same without Richard Barbieri’s amazing keyboard textures and the fantastic drumming from both Chris Maitland and Gavin Harrison (very different from each other but both unique and incredible in their own right). And yes, of course Steven Wilson is a bona fide musical genius! It seems like he just knows exactly what sound needs to go where to create the most impactful song out of whatever elements are being used. What a great band.

What a song... what an album. Using the actual voice of the Heaven’s Gate cult leader to full effect. Just like on Stars Die, they use the audio from then President Nixon speaking from the Oval Office to the astronauts who were the first to land on the Moon in 1969.

I think that was a banjo at the beginning. You might have been thinking of the Dobro, used with a slide and held horizontally in country music, or the metal version used by blues slide players called the National Steel Guitar. See the cover of Johnny Winter's 1968 album Progressive Blues Experiment. If I have questions about further song requests, (I have 1 in), do I email them to the address : NicknLex ? or is it something shorter ? - P.S. Never mind- another address popped up when I tried it.

Saw this song performed live and John Wesley played the part you are referencing on an electric guitar so probably just a pedal effect.

@@CaryOn11 - Well remember; "Trains" has a Banjo solo, and live the part is played on an Acoustic Guitar. I think its out of convenience, they may have particular parts that they feel they don't have to bring the specific instrument on tour. And looking at the Wiki page for the album, it does say Wilson plays on the album: guitars, piano, mellotron, hammered dulcimer, banjo, harp and samples.
