We experience our first heavy storms aboard our massive steel sailing ship.
Corrie and Eunice hit us in the first winter.
Corrie was the first violent storm we experienced, in the end of January.
With wind force 10 and up to 58 knots measured windspeed in The Netherlands it was a sever weather.
It left many households without power and caused a lot of damage.
Just two months later an even more dangerous storm approached.
Eunice, a hurricane force storm.
A code red warning was given due to expected wind force up to 65 knots.
It caused a lot of damage all over northern Europe. Many people were without power. And Eunice even caused 17 deaths.
Up to 100 kn were measured during this dangerous storm.
After experiencing gales up to 130 km/h we admire Erik Aanderaa even more, who sails in such conditions.

• The Couple That Bought...
Just to give you an overview what this channel is all about.
We bought this massive steel trawler.
Which once was a tall Ship.
On the long run we plan to converter her back into a topsail schooner.
The timeframe for that will be 5 to 10 Years.
So we are in for a long journey.
But we already use this ship as our home.
So you can expect videos about projects, about traveling and about living on a floating refit.

The problem with the radio was that the boat owner needs his radio license validated to register the radio itself. This makes absolutely not sense, but it is as it is. Thats also the reason why we removed the radio for this period. The previous owner was very kind and offered us to move the boat with us. We also got lucky with our current berth, there's only one berth deep enough in the entire marina and the harbor had just recently figured that out.

Hi you two, my name is bruce, and my brother and I bought a very similar boat two years ago. It is 83' overall and iron plate and riveted just like yours. She is dutch built from 1950 we where told. We have repaired it structurally, and now starting to rebuild the interior in the folksall . My brother bailed on me last year and now I am trying to finish the project myself, so I really know how you both feel about your dream.....keep it going and best of times for you both.....love your channel. @@FlyingConey hi again, and yes the history was documented by the previous owner....but he took all that info with him when he sold us the vessel sadly. She was built, according to previous owner, for transport to the oil rigs originally, then she went into the commercial fishing fleet where she was modified with two fish holds...midships and aft. She was mandatorily retired from the fishing fleet by the owner, but kept and put on the hard, where she sat till a enterprising couple bought here and modified her to yacht-like profile with the purpose of selling her. They motored the ship on her own bottom from the Netherlands to Seattle, Washington, where she sat for years untill the person we bought her from bought her and motored the ship to Los Angeles, California. He worked on her there for three years and then brought her to San Diego, California, where he worked on her for ten years...lost interest, sold home and moved to Arizona, usa. We bought her in San Diego two years ago...untied her from the slip and motored out of the protected bay and anchored outside the entrance. I live and work on it out here and run in for mail, groceries, and parts to the bay. I am 73 and plan to work on the project as I move south this fall to Panama....enjoying the transit. I can send pictures if you would be interested. I love the ship and life aboard....though it is lonely right now......bruce

Hi Bruce. Actually it would be very interesting to see your boat. If you want you can send me a mail at sailing@flyingconey.com If you do know what her number as a fishing vessel was it would be not to difficult to find out more about the history of your boat. For example our boat was KW-71 Ekhart and SCH-10 Leendert. So if you have any number like that we can try to find out more.

@@FlyingConey Spray foam is expensive ...toxic as it de gasses its ok for small tight spaces but water has a habit of getting into it and causing rust on the contact surfaces. You can use self adhesive slabs of flexible foam then put reflective foil layer on top. Cork breaths but is also waterproof its fire resistant its non toxic even if it burns and you can get fire proof types ... It doesnt break down even after decades in a place like an engine bay ..Melody found it in theirs only a thin layer but even after 30or more years and a leaking deck and windows the metal underneath was perfect. Tar can trap water underneath as can plastic coatings.. Grease and Lanolin both work but are messy and can smell they can also catch fire. So limits where you can use it i would suggest.. like Finnigans wax oil... Spain and Portugal are the main cork producers. One technique for storms is to put an anchor out from midships ( or make a bridle with a line from each end) to hold the boat off the dock.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting technique. But I'm not sure what happens to the Dinghy if I try to drop an anchor on it. I guess usually this maneuver requires a tug boat?
@Pocketfarmer1
@Pocketfarmer1 2 жыл бұрын
@@FlyingConey as it happens I work on sea going tugboats. Lower the anchor slowly into the dinghy, and ease the anchor over the side in a good spot. If your vessel has a stout bollard amid ships , make the road off there. Alternately lead the anchor road from the bow and attach a line from aft to make a triangular bridle. Putting a buoyed line on the end of the anchor helps with retrieval. Doing all of this before the storm hits is way easier.

I would appreciate to have a detailed look at the rigging, particularly any remnants of the sailing rig however much modified. Also a good look at photos from that period and any possible details of your plans to restore the sailing rig. Thanks.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 жыл бұрын
Copy that! The current rig was added when she was converted into the motorsailer. Because of the tendency of dutch boat owners to berth sea ships somewhere at inland waters (don't know why) she has a tilting mast and we also have the sails for this rig. A gaff main and two foresails. It would be no big deal to restore the current rig, but since we want to convert her back into a real tall ship that would be a waste of money. Unfortunately we only have the three photographs of her as a sailing ship shown in the video and nothing more. We hope to find a bit more fotos because she took part in the 1980 tall ship race and maybe there is an archive.

I would like to see a complete walk through of the boat including bilges, windlass? and engine room. Regarding not moving for the first storm; You used to be able to operate a vhf radio without a license just as long as someone onboard/next to you had one, not sure if that is still the case. Plus, you could have either called the other marinas using your mobiles or got the harbourmaster to call on your behalf. Finally, get yourself some really big fenders, old tyres would work well and are cheap. Great video editing. B
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 жыл бұрын
The point we missed is that we need the operator license to register the radio. Using a not registered radio is serious. Way more serious than using a radio without the operator license. Like you we were searching for options, speaking with the agency again and again. Calling them after 8 weeks just to find out that they lost your application form and so on... Also the story with the fenders was a bit shortened. The problem on the landing stage was that our boat is a bit short. 5 meters longer and we would lay on two bollards. But so we were only laying on one bollard up front and aft we had that issue with the fenders. The problem was that the fenders where caught underneath the jetty and the rope was ripped off. Or they jumped out when the water level rose. Also the boards on the jetty were hanging over and we would have damaged them if we rubbed against them. And again, we thought we can leave the next week the whole winter long. You can trust in what we say in the videos. If we say 12 bft we do our research to make sure that the windspeed was above 118 km/h at least in the gusts. With 140 km/h that was easy. But sometimes it's necessary to condense the story a bit to keep it interesting. If I talk about every detail we have 5 different videos with us talking about why we can't leave the jetty. That happened to us in our boat buying video that turned out to be five videos in the end.

Interesting clip again. Just a few observations: I do not believe it is forbidden to sail without a radio-license. It is forbidden to use a VHF radio without a license, but that is a different matter. In any case, there is no need to use a radio on the 1 Nm trip to the marina, so I'm sure you could have moved well before the storm, with no problems at all. Having watched storm Eunice from my home (it's in your video!) I can confirm that it was blowing very hard, but never was more than force 10, except maybe in gusts. And, having lived on a barge on the same jetty that you were on, I can confirm that strong winds from the Northwest produce exceptionally uncomfortable conditions - we've had our sleepless nights too! Having said all this I'm happy to note that you have now been properly registered in The Netherlands with a call sign, MMSI number and a registration as pleasure craft. I'm looking forward to the next episodes!

I've taken the wind speed numbers from an article about the storm that says 140km/h in gusts. Baseline about 10 Baufort... We don't have a wind speed indicator yet. But the white wall of spray was impressive. But I have to admit that the Baufort scale is probably not the best way to measure wind anywhere but the open ocean were it was developed. On inland waters we are requested to have a working radio. However, the chances of somebody finding it out on the 1nm journey are next to none. But we wanted to stay the winter in Urk because half of the winter it seams that our current marina was no option. Bataviahaven also was no option because it's really expensive. You see, it's a more complicated story and we tried to stick with the truth about the outcome but shorten the story here and there to have red line going through the video. But that's what the comment section is for😉

With a ship > 20 meters it is, in the Netherlands, actually not allowed to go out without 2 (1) working radios. Therefore you need the license. In addition on a ship this size its is mandatory to have the AIS on at all times which is also bound to the radio license.

You haven't missed anything yet! Next episode we keep you updated about the projects we already started. Nothing too big. The storms in the video were Corrie and Eunice. However we want to close the gap in between video time and the real time as soon as possible. Not too easy because we also want to make a video about the upcoming projects our first journey and of course the boat tour. All delaying the up keeping with the real time. Got to tell you, I'd have bullshitted about the radio to move the boat! Did you think about using any of the Pro skippers to move the boat? Do you need a coxswain ticket or anything for the big girl? Please show us the mechanical side :). Luv ya work!

We have condensed the story a bit here. Originally we wanted to spend the winter in a completely different location. A sail of about 6 hours. At first the harbor we are currently in seamed to be no option because of our draft. But during the winter they have remeasured and it's just enough for us. The other harbor is about 6 times more expensive... That's why it's always empty. A pro skipper was no option because the boat owner needs an operators license that he is allowed to register the radio. A rule made by some fool... We are on a big lake so there are special rules. Also that we are required to have a radio, only applies at inland waters. The only good thing about these rules is we have right of way over smaller boats 😀 She is registered as a pleasure craft and we have the basic German certificate to operate a pleasure craft at any size.

Hello! I don't understand why you don't have a pair of VHF portable such as backups, going to shore ok the 144 Is beautiful but no GMDSS.

We want to buy them soon. Technically also a bit of a gray area to use them because we are on inland waters. We also need the radio operators license for inland waters.

@@FlyingConey Yes, we also need this license for France and I think for all countries. One Radio license interesting for sailors is amateur radio for shore contacts, not expensive, affordable material. Kind regards from Brittany. (Still afraid with buns onboard)

What licence do you need to operate a boat as big as this for pleasure not commercial.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 жыл бұрын
The same license as you would need for any other pleasure craft. There's some equipment mandatory like AIS and Radio but no special license required. However, as a captain you have to make sure that you have the knowledge and enough crew to safely operate the vessel.

In the Netherlands you need "Vaarbewijs 1 & 2" to be able to go out with a boat < 25 m on the bigger lakes and coastal waters. In addition for a pleasure craft >25 and < 40 meters you need " Groot vaarbewijs Pleziervaart" which includes, like a drivers license, an practical exam on your ship. And you need a radio license both for yourself and the ship.

Welcome to the IJsselmeer! I subscribed to your channel, curious about your proceedings. But pleae, when you can find the time, try to improve on your English. I'm sure you can do better than this, even though German is your native language. Keep up the good work!

@@FlyingConey If you have a meter in the wheelhouse just take a shot next time. But at my age I have seen a number of storms and hurricanes around the world. If you are from Urk you are not allowed to sail on sundays! It is some time since I have seen those vessels, though.

@@floro7687 No meter in the wheelhouse but the marina had a meter. Recorded windspeed in Lelystad itself was 140km/h in gusts. Above 118km/h it's a force 12. Not much exaggerating here...😉
