Come aboard for a short boat tour of our 82ft historic project ship.
During the shipyard time we gutted most of the interior to get access to the hull.
We found many broken frames and some holes. We repaired the holes and saved the frames for the next shipyard time. So right now Flying Coney is a big building site.
If you are curios how she looked before we ripped everything apart check out this video:

Are you going to add a fuel polisher and air conditioning? Also what will your set up look like as far as electronics go? Will you be adding Star Link? Will you be adding a jacuzzi/sit at bar on top of the aft cabin? Can you imagine how fun it would be to sit in the hot tub while anchored out in a fjord in Norway or Alaska???? Noting like beauty hot water and a relaxing drink in hand to make any hard work totally worth it!

The plan is to lay out Flying Coney as real sailing ship. Gaff sails, no winches a comfortable saloon and bunks for the sailors. So no charter yacht but a sailing ship. That means we only need yacht equipment for the electronics and we don't need a jacuzzi. Maybe a sauna would be nice 😁 Air conditioning has no priority but we do have enough space for one, not sure about the budget 😅

@Logan Johnson, our homeport will stay Amsterdam for now. So we will continue to fly the Dutch flag. Long term the British Island Jersey is an option but once we leave the Dutch register there's no coming back because of the CVO. Unfortunately it's not possible to register any seagoing vessel over 24 meters in Austria. Wien would be a great homeport if you ask me.

I have a suggestion. Since I have been involved in the restoration and repair of an 80 year old WW2 steel Landing Craft in Portland, Oregon (the USS LCI713), we have been preserving the steel using this method. For restoring the ship interior hull, we have had very good results by first properly cleaning the loose rust with a wire wheel, then applying (1 or 2 coats) a 'Rust Converter" primer, and then several coats of white enamel topcoat paint over the cured rust converter primer. This method will stop any further interior corrosion, and brighten up the compartment as well. The interior of your ship could use some added brightness! Then we install thermal insulation over the painted hull surface. In our case, we used hard sheet foam board 25mm thick and construction adhesive to attach it. Over the foam board we cut sheets of cloth and used thin wallpaper paste to stick the cloth over the foam board to provide a smooth surface suitable for painting. Then paint whatever color desired. Perhaps you may want to consider using a similar strategy to ours for treating the old "fish room" and forecastle room. The rust converter primer that we use is a brand called "Corroseal" but I am sure that there are many other similar products available to you. I think its active ingredient is phosphoric acid that converts the rust into a stable "magnatite" black iron oxide (rather than unstable red hematite) that once it forms will not continue to oxidize further. I hope this is useful information to you. Otherwise, you two have done so much on Flying Coney and you have a fantastic channel! Jerry

It's a fantastic project you have, very interesting! Our main problem when considering different methods to conserve the hull is that we have riveted, overlapping steel plates. We can't reach every rust in between the plates or underneath the frames. Also rust converter will not reach everything. So speaking about conserving the hull a relatively fluid grease, fat, bitumen or similar is the best method (Ovatrol, Liquid Shield...) The problem is that you can't really glue insulation on these type of coatings. So our idea is to make panels, glue the insulation on the panels and screw the panels onto the frames. Leaving a small air gap between the insulation and the hull. Cheap easy and quick and also not a problem if we need to have a rivet welded. We also can only use either armaflex or stone wool insulation for legal reasons. Thank your for giving us tipps ans for following along! All the best.
@mmkuyt
@mmkuyt 11 ай бұрын
you don't need to glue the insulation to the hull. there are special nails you spotweld on the hull , they look like huge drawing pins. you simply pin the insulation on them, try google an image of a 'lasnagel', you'll see what i mean.

Dear Barbara and Daniēl, Your tour on board of Flying Coney gave WIlleke and me a good impression of the condition of this ship what’s to our opinion not too bad but of course there need to be done a lot before she will be back as a nice tall ship as shown in the picture in your previous vlog. This in special by lowering the deck, wheelhouse etc. and also with 2 masts, full rigging and all sails that were shown on your image from the previous vlog. It’s for us fully understandable that you want to bring this ship to Germany because there people speak your language what makes things far more easy for you. Willeke and I guess that such a trip will be done by crossing the North Sea to bring the boat to Northern Germany for a more specialized yard for such a job. We like to follow the development of this ship no matter where you are going so we look forward to next vlog and send you love

For many years ‘50-‘80’s my father ran a English manufacturer plant that made waterproof paper from 2 layers of heavy craft paper and bitchium with sisal later fiberglass for strength. Many waterproofing applications called ‘Sisalcraft’. Prehaps a product like this could work as a layer between the hull and insulation . There were many version of this product with silver foil and extra thick etc. some roofing products might be similar. I do not like the idea of any wood strips against the hull frames for obvious reasons . A cheap very durable modern sheet product is ‘coroplas’ or twin-wall.plastic. This could be a good barrier too. Many decisions for you to consider Good luck Warren

The idea is to make the aft deck on bulwark hight. In my opinion that's the best compromise for a sailing ship. You have a great steering position where you can see the sails and still a lot of space underneath for an owners cabin. The lowered wheelhouse would still be a great inside steering position under motor and a great place to sit down, have a coffee or warm up for the next shift in the cold.

Just because a system is older, doesn't mean it's worse than a newer system. In my experience, the more 'electric' you go, the more problems you can have. Of course, I'm not advocating that for navigation we should all return to using sextants, etc. But still, look before you leap!

Are you referring to the old Perkins genset? Well we do have three engines in the engine room. The youngest one is the Deutz Generator it's 30 years old now. The main engine is almost 50 years old now and still going strong. The Perkins is far older than that has 25 000 hours on it and it's "Frankenstein" looking on the electrical side. It's a huge project on its own, but if you have the skill and time maybe you want to come over and have a look.

Unless you have problems with corrosion under the concrete and/or need space for more ballast, I would leave the concrete as it is. It’s excellent corrosion proofing if it was done right and also serves as reasonable density ballast at a good price. Before you remove the aft poopdeck please take a look at a ship named “Meteor” in Stockholm. Keeping it will save you enormous amount of work and you will still have a nice sailing ship. Best of luck/ : D
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
If you look at our line drawing with a lowered quarter deck the lines are quite similar to the lines of Meteor. The reason is that we're a bit smaller than this ship. We don't want to remove the raised deck, we just want to lower it down a bit. Also we're not going to remove the ballast. You're right, concrete is great to protect steel. Sometimes you have gutters on deck and these gutters are filled with concrete in our case. The problem is that where the concrete meets the wooden deck it's leaking and there's growing plants and everything 😂 I'm not a big fan of concrete above the water line... But you put a lot of thought into your comment and it shows that you know quite something about boats, so please se my answer as a detailed response. Thank you for your comment!

@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
At this point we don't have drawings for lowering the aft deck. We made some measurements and checked for plausibility. Also you can see the original deck underneath the shower, so the raised quarterdeck is fairly new. The lowering of the quarter deck itself is straight forward, the tricky bit is how to integrate the wheelhouse. That we do want to go to Germany was a big spoiler and we still have to make it to Germany. But if everything goes as planned we will go out at the Bültjer yard.

Thank you! The ballast mostly is the flat part of the cabin sole. What we want to remove is concrete that was there to protect the frames from melting ice during her fishing time. So just a bit that is in between the frames and only a few 100kg. We will weigh it and stability for sailing is a separate topic. But the little bit we have to remove doesn't make any difference.

Getting rid of a generator engine because its old to make space.. Well, what if it was running? Would you keep it then? Because it may not be too much effort to get it to run. I love your watertight doors for ever compartment. That is great! I really had no clue that that was the case. It certainly is what you need, and will make sure you don't sink in the ocean when there is a leak. You forgot to mention the SONAR. 10:35 I would rip every last part of the stuff out on the lower decks and get the frames fixed and then maybe do some bitumen paint on the inside. Then some rockwool and then some laminated board sheets you can stack up and laminate yourself too. Or something of the sort. Yes the watertight doors are very cool. I would certainly add these to a steel sailing boat if I would go onto the sea. This is no luxury, it is very important because you wont regret it when things happen. Just be sure they are closed all the time, otherwise its just as terrible as having no watertight doors at all. You wont be the first ship that sank like that. If I were you, I would certainly learn every last bit there is to know about welding, and diesel engines. As well as electricity. You will not regret knowing these things because they will save a lot of money, and you will be able to fix the ship anywhere. Very cool boat! Greetings, Jeff
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
Hi Jeff, it's not only the engine of the generator nor working, that would be the easy thing to fix but it was decommissioned about 30 years ago, it has 25 000 hours and the electric side looks "Frankenstein". Also we don't need a genset that big. But if you like you can have a look at it 😉 Our idea for the coating and the insulation is to use liquid shield and perma shield made from wool fat on the hull. It's conserving the steel even under the frames and in between the plates. I'm not a big fan of rock wool insulation so our idea is to make panes with armaflex insulation and screw that to the frames. If that makes sense... We have plenty of opportunity to practice welding when laying the deck, it's not as safety relevant as the frames and quite some meters of weld needed. All the best!

We have a document that says that the "ship was rebuilt in steel using the steel frames from a wooden outpost boat" That could mean that she was built as a so called Kriegsfischkutter KFK for the German Kriegsmarine. She was probably used as outpost boat, for lookout duties, defense against airplanes or for hunting submarines. After the war probably for sweeping mines and, that could explain her rebuild, was destroyed doing this task. The only thing is that she looks a little bit different to a KFK almost like a hybrid in between a logger and a KFK and she fished as a seiner.

If we do have a steady income that's reasonable for two people it will take us 2-3 years. Until now we managed to do this refit at very reasonable costs so my estimation is 400-450 000€ for the entire refit. Less than half of it and we have a safe motorboat and a few cabins. The rig is the single most expensive thing but it can be done in stages.

Hi guys from Australia, you sure have a heck of a job ahead of you but I’m sure you feel more than capable. I would love to know what time frame you plan for total restoration work to take? Are you going to take it out of the water when you get to Germany or birth it, just wandering g because you have a lot of steel work to do and that stuff is heavy? Can I ask if you have welding gear available? Are you doing the welding yourself? Have you thought about having a volunteers day where keen people can come and help, many hands make light work, especially on a big boat like this? When you bought a big boat like this did you think about the cost of birthing it in different places around the world? Good on you both, I will follow with a keen interest towards your work.

Lot's of questions 👍 The time frame is 2-3 years if we have enough founds to do the work. Volunteers are always welcome here you can sign up: eepurl.com/isvgFU Once in Germany we will probably take out the concrete while in the water and then haul out. We do have welding gear but we will do only the prep work for legal reasons. Costs of birthing are very reasonable here because we are a historic ship. It's about 300€ per month. There are places even cheaper than that. All the best and maybe see you as a volunteer?

Should try to get that perkins working
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 9 ай бұрын
We don't have the space nor do we need two generators. So I believe keeping the newer and smaller one is the more reasonable decision. Also the decision to remove the Perkins is more about the electric side of the generator. It's just too old and it has 25 000 hours on the clock.

You mention new steel masts. Do they have to be steel or are there other options?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
Considering everything steel is really the only option. The only alternative is wood, but it's difficult to get or more expensive if you want laminated ones. Also more maintenance and not as secure. Speaking about sailing performance the benefits are marginal. But we do want to have wooden spars and probably wooden topmasts.

Are you planning a single or double mast ? Lots of stuff and nowhere to put it ! Lol. Are you working from the top down or the other way ?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
At a boat her size two masts are the only way to go. She was rigged as a schooner and we do want to go in this direction. Single masts are a thing for racing yachts with a large professional crew. And first things firs, next steps are the structural repairs, so we're working from the inside out I guess.

if you remove the concrete, what will you use as ballast?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
We're not removing the ballast. Back in 1950 there was a change in fishing. They started to use ice to conserve the fish at sea. Someone back then thought that the melting ice could destroy the frames and thought that maybe a little bit of concrete in between the frames could protect them. We only want to remove this bit and not the many tones of ballast that makes the flat cabin sole of the ship.

I know that you are set on making this a true sailing vessel once again but why not make things a little easier on yourselves and the boat a little more efficient as a motor sailor? Maybe a little less work, and be able to go no matter what the weather is or no matter where you are.

What will replace rhe concrete ballast?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 11 ай бұрын
We will not touch the concrete ballast 😉 Only a little bit that was poured in between the frames to protect them. We also want to remove quite a bit of weight that's above the waterline to improve the stability.

82 feet of nightmares 😅 and lifelong headaches 😫 🥶🥵 GOD bless kenny Rogers 🙏 in your case you need to🏃‍♀️🏃. For the sake of your sanity and health the time and money will be better spent on nice sailing boat or cat and start enjoying your lives immediately. You can't live life of oligarchs on that mentality 😅 . It's either you have it or die dreaming about it. I've seen better ships without major rust issues sent to scrap yards in India to be cut off and recycled to metal. Sorry if I've been harsh but you need to face reality. I wish you the very best of luck 🤞but in this case you need a miracle 🙏 😅 ✌❤☘

Recently someone showed me pictures of the refit of a 40 meter classical yacht. The thing is if you don't know what to look for it looks like the refit of a 45ft yacht. It wasn't until I saw someone standing!! in the bilge until I realized how big this beast is.

It kind of was. She was for sale for two years and not much had been done in the last 10 years or so. She was auctioned back in 2012 for 35 000€. The only thing that happened during then was the CVO.
