Our First time in Hong Kong!
Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China.
We walked our way from Avenue of Stars overlooking Victoria Harbour, all the way to a traditional market called the Ladies Market in Kowloon. Then we took the subway to go to Hong Kong Island, and to Victoria Peak. We knew that Hong Kong is a concrete jungle, with the most skyscrapers in the world. But we did not expect it to be so green! we were pleasantly surprised by the view from The Peak. We also tasted some popular food from Hong Kong like pineapple bun, egg tarts, and even went to a Michelin star restaurant for some wonton noodle. Check out our first impressions of Hong Kong.
We ate at Tsim Chai Kee Restaurant (Michelin Star)
Don't do what we did...standing in line to buy the tram ticket. Instead, buy your Victoria Peak tram ticket online , and skip the line: affiliate.klook.com/redirect?...

Since I'm from Hong Kong, I thought I'd address some of the curiosities raised in this video: 1. The numbers and colours on the metro signage are a relic from the MTR network's simpler days, when there were only 2-3 lines. In fact, the colour is what represents the line, and the numbers are only the platform numbers which differ from station to station. With so many lines today, there are too many colours to make the signage intuitive. 2. Underwater tunnels--for aesthetic and climate reasons, there are no bridges across Hong Kong's main harbour. So there are 3 road tunnels and 4 railway tunnels running underneath. In this video, you crossed the harbour between Tsim Sha Tsui and Admiralty. The tunnels are built with one of two methods: Prefab concrete tube sections sunk and then sealed, or tunnel boring machines. 3. The quick-moving crowds at the Peak Tram station are the result of a major renovation which completely shut down the Tram service for a year and a half. Before 2022, the stations and the train cars were smaller and the queues ALWAYS stretched far outside, which meant it was bloody living hell to get into during the humid summers. The difference is night and day as you saw. 4. The British-looking taxi (Toyota Comfort Hybrid) is a much needed replacement for the older taxis, which date back to the early 1990s and are not up to modern safety standards. The new ones started appearing in 2018 and will steadily replace all older taxis. They look like London taxis because of the extra-tall cabin. But unlike London taxis, these babies have got sliding doors! 5. Bamboo scaffolding--the climate and pace of construction work in Hong Kong lend well to this cheaper and more flexible method of scaffolding. Since bamboo is an organic material, it does decay and cannot withstand very cold temperatures. So, it works great in tropical climates, and assuming proper care over time. 6. Worn-looking buildings are primarily due to pollution exacerbated by humidity, and the fact that postwar tenements were very basic without facilities to maintain the exteriors. Surfaces were either bare concrete, paint or tile, all of which are rough and easily trap contaminants. In the early 2010s, the government financed a one-time exterior refresh of older buildings. Trust me--they looked even worse before 🤣 If you haven't noticed, I'm a bit of an infrastructure geek 😏 Hope it's at least somewhat useful.

Get this. When I came in 2000 from Toronto, the MTR only had 6 lines. Blue, Red, Green, Orange to Tung Chung and Green to the airport. In 23 years, 6 additional lines added, over 100km of new track and installed platform glass walls and doors in all in-city metro stations. During this time, Toronto only built 5.5km called Line 4 Sheppard Line. 😂😂😂 What a joke. I remember The City were talking about this Sheppard line since the 90s.

I think strictly from a business perspective, the MTR is incentivised to expand. It gets property rights at multiple locations on new lines, so it doesn’t even need to wait for its railway operating profit to slowly recoup the design, procurement and construction costs of expansion. The mere sale of residential flats will more than feed the project. I think that’s a big reason why the MTR can expand aggressively in such a developed, saturated city.

Pineapple buns are called that not because there's any pineapples inside but because the original pineapple buns had a cracked crust topping that resemble a pineapple skin texture. The one you guys got didn't really have that cracked top crust so nothing pineapple about it. 😂

Hi! Great video, I loved it! I want to clear up some things you mentioned in the video: 1. The signs for “Subway” you presumably saw don’t actually go to the MTR (what the metro is called, short for mass transit rail), but instead go to underground crossings of major roads that do not have on-road crossings 2. The Mid-Levels escalator actually goes both up and down. It goes down in the morning to get people from the residential area of Mid-Levels to the financial hub of Central, then switches direction to up sometime in the afternoon to bring people back home after work 3. The restaurant you went to does not have a Michelin star, that is on a whole different level of prestige. What you went to is on the Michelin guide, which are restaurants Michelin recommends, but are completely different from Michelin stars. There are only a few Michelin star restaurants in Hong Kong and they are all super fancy and expensive, to my knowledge. Anyways, great video, I really hope you enjoy Hong Kong!

As a Hong Konger, what I think you truly missed out on was Hong Kong’s nightlife. For example visiting Victoria dockside , the Peak by tram is truly a complete different experience at night. It is also known as how Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps. Going out the outdoor escalator at night in Soho or going to Lan Kwai Fong for a drink to experience Hong Kong’s nightlife culture would be an unforgettable experience.

Victoria Harbour - that area that you called a river…is part of the ocean…it’s not a river. You were looking at Hong Kong Island…an island at the edge of the mainland…next to the South China Sea. I love Hong Kong…was there in 2019. And, the the Central Mid-level escalator switches direction depending on the time of day. It goes down in the morning, when most residents are going to their jobs in the business districts.

To the peak, except peak tram or on foot, you can also take bus route 15 from central and it only costs HK$11.2 one way. 35 minutes bus journey and bus comes every 10 minutes.

Next time you come get an Octopus card. Either a physical one or smart one on your phone (if you have a data connection), you're paying more by buying individual tickets and plus you can use it to pay for stuff in convenience stores, restaurants and shops. Essentially is like the Easy card in Taiwan.

It looks like you guys didn’t do much preparation for the trip. No, pineapple buns typically don’t contain pineapples (although some places put them in as a novelty). Yes, there is sun in HK winters. Yes, the term “subway” is used, but it does not refer to the MTR train. It actually refers to the underground walkway.

The same thing applies in the UK. A subway is an underground walkway, usually under a busy road or road junction. In London, overseas visitors will often follow a subway sign expecting to find the entrance to an Underground/Tube station! That said, there sometimes is actually an entrance to the Tube in a subway, causing people to falsely believe that we do refer to the Tube as a subway when we actually don't! To further confuse matters, the underground railway system in Glasgow is actually known as the Glasgow Subway. 😖
@canto_v12

@@andybaker2456 the ironic thing is that the label for the Tube is “Underground,” which is the most generic word ever.

The peak tram is on it's 6th generation, even just a few years ago the cars were comparatively more crowded and cramped than it is now. Go in the morning, when i went a few days ago, the tram was less than half full, and there was no queue. Prebuy the ticket online, it was only 112HKD for a round trip and sky terrace included. The views from the sky terrace are so much better than any "free" view outside, having experienced both. After living in HK for a while, it does lose it's appeal, there are pros and cons of living in big cities.

Agreed, you need to reset your expectations to live in HK long term. If you want a convenient location, the flats are tiny. And Hong Kong is not known for “customer service.” It’s easy to lose sight of all the good things and get frustrated with the bad 😅

Hong Kong does have some topographic similarity to Rio de Janeiro, but socially it is another dimension. It does not show the inequalities seen in Rio. The absence of a slavery past may explain the main reason for that.

Just want to point out that “Pineapple” bun has NO pineapple in it, your comment about tasting pineapple is a placebo effect. It is called that bc of the top of the bun looking similar to a pineapple. Some claim it originated from Shanghai. Another popular way to eat this is to sandwich a thick slice of butter in a hot bun, not my cup of tea. Grew up in HK 5 decades ago, I only tasted it once.
