We are back in China with another 144-HR visa free transit.
This time, we travel to Xi'An, China for Chinese New Year!!!
Xi'An is the oldest city in China. So we were hoping to join the festive Spring Festival celebrations.
But many people on our comment sections are warning us not to visit China during the Chinese New Year because travelling in China is a nightmare during this holiday season. And many cities will become like a ghost town. But we really want to see what China is like during the new year. So we flew to Xi'An to find out.
Travelling to China was not what we expected. China surprised us!
Is China dangerous? Is China safe? What's China really like? Check out our vlog!
We used Surfshark VPN to access social media and Google in Xi'An. Get an exclusive Surfshark VPN deal! Use our link, and enter promo code JETFAM for an extra 3 months free at surfshark.deals/JETFAM

That candy you bought was honey, malt, grains mixed candy, which is actually quite natural and traditional. It tends to give you a mouth-hurting feeling because it's very dehydrated and sweet and will suck all the water in your mouth. In old times, people would give their kids some candy chips to keep the kids quiet(because it's very sticky), but if some kids were too greedy, and ate too much, their mouths would hurt, and the candy would taste bitter due to the grains.

Chinese New Year is a pure family reunion holiday, its history will always be happy and peaceful throughout. Christmas and Thanksgiving are built on the blood and tears of another race. I hope you do some historical homework when you make comparisons. As a Chinese, feel offended by comparing Thanksgiving Day to Chinese New Year.

“Gung hay fat choy” is Cantonese pronunciation for 恭喜发财,in mandarin it is Gong Xi Fa Cai, same word same meaning just different pronunciation. It means wish you good fortune. Xi'an (historic Chang'an) is the ancient capital for 13 of China's dynasties including some of the earliest. Hence youi have all the "princess" there. Most of the Tang poetry, classic story and uncountable historic event took place here. President Xi Jing Ping once said something to the point that you want to see modern China, go to Shanghai; China a couple of centuries ago, go to Beijing, to see China a thousand years ago, go to Xian.

15:55 That yellow honey taste solid stuff should be a traditional street sugar snack called 老糖 (old sugur, honeycomb toffee). It is made of barley malt(maltose), millet, corn, pear, wild bee honey. Ingredients are melted stirred and cooled to solid state. It is not likely to be synthetic cause that will be more expensive and should not be a tourist scam either because it is mostly sold to locals. The burning taste may come from the honey or ginger in it. And it shouldn't be eaten too much. In our childhood a small piece goes a long way. Anyway don't worry.

Roujiamo, often referred to as the "Chinese hamburger," is a famous street food originating from Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province. This delectable snack consists of two main components: the "mo," a type of flatbread that's slightly crispy on the outside while remaining soft on the inside, and the "rou," which refers to the succulent, slow-stewed meat, typically either beef or lamb, finely chopped or shredded. The preparation of Roujiamo is an art in itself. The meat is stewed for hours with an array of spices and seasonings until it becomes tender and flavorful. Meanwhile, the bread is baked to achieve the perfect balance of a crunchy crust and a soft interior. To assemble, the bread is split open, some of the fluffy inside is removed to make room, and then it's generously filled with the juicy, aromatic meat. For visitors, it's an absolute must-try, offering a taste of authentic Chinese street food that's both satisfying and steeped in tradition.

According to the description written on the white board. The candy you bought is called "老糖", commonly known as "malted candy". Its medical name is "Yi Sugar." It is primarily made by boiling a mixture of ingredients such as honey, millet, malt, hawthorn, ancient mountain corn, snow pear, Chinese yam, Fritillaria cirrhosa, and winter melon. It is known for its properties of aiding digestion, stimulating appetite, relieving cough and phlegm, clearing heat, and nourishing the lungs. It has a special efficacy in treating asthma and bronchitis. It is considered a green food and suitable for people of all ages. It can be consumed directly or brewed as a tea.

There’s no such thing as Lunar New Year in China though, you can call it Chinese New Year, Chun Jie or Nong Li Xin Nian. Lunar New Year is something created by the western media that doesn’t exist in Chinese culture, wrong translation.

Hi Steve and Ivana, since you guys visit China for multiple times using 144 hours visa free transit, you should really apply for Visitor visa (one-entry, valid for about 4 months) at the port of entry (it is called visa on arraival [VOA]). This visa mechanism starts just recently and you can ask the immigration officer fot it when you arrive in China next time around. It will save you a lot of money on those transit flights.

They are Canadians, currently travel in Asia. To do China visa, they have to fly back to Canada, wait for visa approval that takes a week with lots of hassle (invitation letter, proof of hotel bookings etc) --> they are travellers, and then fly again to China. Visa it self is not cheap, $100. Therefore, it is much much cheaper and efficient to do the free visa on arrival.

Nice, Xi'an is a great place. Here is a small suggestion. I think you should learn another useful Chinese word“一点点” , pronounced like “yee dean dean”,it means just “a little bit”. You will need this word before someone asks you how much chili pepper to put on the barbecue/noodle/hotpot, or how much honey candy you want to buy. . .
