Used to play with one of the Col. Bruce Hampton Bands (Aquarium Rescue Unit, and or Fiji Mariners); as others mentioned, long-term now with Widespread Panic; used to write a column for Guitar Player magazine -- where a lot of people heard of him from. He did a tour with John McLaughlin, announced as McLaughlin's last tour, actually, where he played Mahavishnu music. Herring's band did a set, McLaughlin's, and then both together. I went for McLaughlin -- had to see him on his last tour -- but was blown away by Herring and his band, too.

Very nice! Proud fellow Southern Son. Jimmys a beast on the guitar! Very sought after player who has played with bunches of groups. Currently with Widespread Panic. He tends to be a mainstay in the jam band circuit.

I do love Jimmy. I first was introduced to him when he was playing with the Aquarium Rescue Unit. That band was completely sick. I saw them at least four times in Atlanta, at Seven Stages, Smith's Old Bar, can't remember where else. Jimmy always sounded amazing, as did Otiel Burbridge on bass. That band was on jet fuel. Oh an, Jimmy is currently 59 years old. Jimmy did play on the Mahavishnu Orchestra tribute album Inner Mounting Apocalypse, on the track Meeting Of The Spirits.

Hey guys - I've never heard of Jimmy Herring and that was brilliant. There was something comforting and familiar about this music even though it's the first time I've heard this. Yes absolutely, has touches of Al Di Meola. A few changes there brought in a touch of Jeff Beck and it even had moments of Brand X [ Phil Collins on drums ] I can't wait for more of this guy. Sure I could just u.tube him right now - but - I prefer to hear it first with you guys, then consider seeking out his albums. I'm hearing this via my computer speakers, which are ok, but I know full well what a difference it makes when played from an album on my hi fi system. It's like the difference between watching an old black & white portable tv and the huge HD colour tv's today. No comparison . So if this is brilliant now - Then it's gonna be amazing via the album. Thankyou for this reaction. That was so good.

One of my favorite guitarists. He’s been the lead guitarist for Widespread Panic for 16 years now. You might enjoy their stuff although not as jazzy. But you’ll want to do live to hear them. He’s only been on couple of their studio albums and he is something to behold live.

Jimmy Herring grew up being a big fan of Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs. He's 59 now. Then, after he took a course at Berkley, became a student of Scott Henderson's at Musician's Institute. He played with Billy Cobham for a while in a group which was called Jazz Is Dead because they played jazz versions of Grateful Dead songs, and there are a couple of Y.Tube videos of him playing with drummer Lenny White. I first heard him playing in the jam band Col.Bruce Parker's (correction : Bruce Hampton) Aquarium Rescue Unit. He also played for a while in the Allman Brothers, and some of the people on this album are from Allman Bros.slide player Derek Trucks' band. After hearing him cover a Mahavishnu Orch. song on the album after this one, John McLaughlin chose Herring's band to accompany him on his farewell American tour, where after playing a set each they would both play old Mahavishnu music together. (McLaughlin is having arthritis issues.) There are a lot of different types of music on this album, but I figured the solo on this one showed some of his phrasing and note choices. It isn't always apparent how much he is using the whammy bar unless you watch him, but you will on the other song. Sometimes he plays regular blues too, like his cover of Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" on Y.Tube. Glad you liked it, He is on those Jeff Richman tributes, and is a fan of Holdsworth too. Jeff Sipe, who you know from Shawn Lane, was on drums, and the song was written by the flute player when he was a teen.

Yes!! Love Jimmy Herring. Check out his stuff with Widespread Panic, he joined them about 12 years ago and they have some really cool albums. Free Somehow is his first album with Panic. I love that. He replaced the late great Mikey Houser on guitar and fair play, he's taken them to some new places whilst still being Widespread Panic we all love.
