Good ol' Fil never has a bad word to say about anyone. Seems a very nice , well centured chap with a good attitude that sadly so many on youtube dont have - especially on this subject . Im sick of reading comments about who is better than who -like its the guitar olympics . Music's criteria should be " does it evoke emotion or not " Well done Fil

LOVE that you did Jimmy Herring. An often underappreciated guitarist. I was in my office about 10 years ago, listening to Aquarium Rescue Unit and my finance manager, who had played for 20 years and considered himself a great appreciator of elite guitarists, walked by and immediately noticed Jimmy's Brilliance but had no idea of who he was. It always make me a little sad when I talk about my favorites, Gilmour, Santana, SRV and Herring, and I get, Herring???

I have been a massive Jimmy H fan for years. I'm a huge fusion guitar nut, following the great innovators particularly in the 70s, and Jimmy is one of the few newer players to really take forward the torch convincingly and with his own 'voice'. It says so much that John McLaughlin chose to tour jointly with Jimmy on his fnal US tour recently. Jimmy has absorbed so much, the whammy technique of Jeff Beck, Indian tonalities of John McLaughlin, legato approach in places of the incomporable Allan Holdsworth, etc. But all with his own unique sound and phrasing. This footage was taken from the new Universe festival some yeasr ago, and to my mind this is the best version of WYWY that Jimmy has recorded, just so beautiful!

Sounds/resemble Celtic wind instruments like the uillean pipes or bagpipes. What he’s doing is very similar to what they do. The way he’s constantly opening and closing on the pedal is similar to what those pipers do as they regulate the sound with a constant up and down motion on the valve like apparatus.

Great ! One of my favourites. He used to follow Steve Morse and the Dregs around, and ended up jamming with them. Then he went out west and became a student of Scott Henderson, and he said that changed everything. He just finished accompanying John McLaughlin on McL.'s last U.S. tour. They would play a set each, and then jam on Mahavishnu music. McLaughlin has said that besides Jeff Beck, Jimmy is the only person he has heard do justice to that music. Thanks again ! He can not only evoke the style of Jeff Beck (whom I never found very interesting personally Wired was okay but I was over it by Blow by Blow) but also Garcia, Duane Allman, Clapton and many more Jeff on several occasions has allowed Jimmy to play Sophie his prized white Strat, August 2018 Jimmy personally thanks Beck "for decades of inspiration. A couple of times one's acting annoyed at the other and such, and one almost really tripped, but with all that tomfoolery they STILL mesh. He shares a lot with Jeff Beck in terms of the swell / bend technique. In regard to you comment about his picking technique, notice how the rotational axis of his picking hand is not parallel nor coincident with the center of his forearm. That is, he 'wobbles' his hand. As to pick-holding, compare Steve Morse, Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, Allan Holdsworth, John Petrucci, etc. All phenomenal player but with different approaches ...remember Les Paul? :-) Great video and analysis!

Jimmy H is a master of his instrument. Great analysis, Fil. Love your explanations about the different parts and techniques. May I also recommend Sonny Landreth. There are 2 that stand out for me. One with Eric Clapton, Promised Land. The other is with Derek Trucks, Congo Square. Lots going on with both. Great channel, Fil!!

Premier Guitar magazine did a "rig rundown" with Jimmy. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZzSgY2PlMt3ZsU Short version: '64 Super Reverb head into a 4x10 cabinet with Tone Tubby alnico speakers. Second output (presumably the extension speaker jack) into a THD Hot Plate. The Hot Plate has a line out -> volume pedal -> Axe Fx (for stereo reverb only) -> Crown solid state amp --> Marshall 4x12 stereo cabinet. I think Jimmy uses two volume pedals. The one before the Axe Fx is used to control the reverb level. It's unclear where the other one is in the signal chain. Jimmy's only other pedal that he mentions is a Hughes and Kettner OD pedal.

Jimmy Herring? The great Captain Beefheart once said, “Music is like a fish. To play the scales of the fish you must use the scales of the musician”. Still don’t know what he meant as usual. Another interesting and informative video, thanks Fil.

This is wonderful. Not one of my favorite Beatles tunes in the original, but this version, Andy Timmons', Jim Thomas (of the Mermen)'s, and Adrian Belew's ALL blow my mind. I was lucky enough to see Herring's band with John McLaughlin's, at the latter's last U.S. show in Los Angeles. One for the ages.

If I've learned one thing playing guitar, it's that ya gotta play the way that feels right for you. I remember trying to teach someone the way I hold my pick. He just couldn't get it. I finally told him to do what feels right for him...everyone is different!👍😎🎸🎶

Great playing on this tune, really captures the feeling of it. Re: holding pick with thumb and middle finger mostly - Carlos Santana also does that a bit. It's clearly something that can work, even if not everyone will be comfortable with it. Different strokes, as they say ...

This kind of reminded me of Harvey Mandel and that album Cristo Redentor. Harvey was tipped to join the Rolling Stones at one point- he had been in Canned Heat- where he was given the nickname Snake. Anyway, here he is doing Wade In the Water, which oldies will remember was a soul song by Marlena Shaw. However, when Harvey did it- he took it somewhere else ! This is the studio version from 1968- kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6mypXlojayKsLc Also here is Harvey more recently doing it live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYuUiYSMn5uZfrM

Thank you for introducing me to this artist. I had to look through the comments to see who this brilliant player reminded others of, and there are so many answers, meaning Herring is a unique artist with diverse skills. I was hearing some sort of a cross between Frank Marino (whom Fil and I agree is hugely underrated) and Jeff Beck.

@@melvynobrien6193 OK. To be fair he does have some of Jeff Beck's tonal qualities in his playing. But, as another comment mentions, the importance here is, does the player's technique evoke emotion? With Jimmy, it does, even if he is copying to a certain extent, what Jeff Beck does.

@@wingsofpegasus Thanks. I see there is a debate here, claiming that Jimmy's technique sounds exactly like Jeff Beck. To be fair, I have seen Jimmy, and have also seen Jeff Beck in concert. Their sounds are similar, but there has to be some difference in the nuances of how each of them plays as an individual.
