The movie was a mess ... because the dialogue was terrible and Tony had no character. RDJ and Favreau re-wrote the dialogue and created the charismatic Tony Stark ... which started it all.

@@Muck006 From my understanding, the comic character didn't have much of a personality and that was why the script was such a mess to begin with, but RDJ showed one in his auditions and that was why he got the part in the end. Another thing people should know is that this movie was not intended to kick off a huge franchise. It was supposed to be a stand-alone flick that would _maybe_ fit into something bigger but could just as well be discarded as irrelevant or non-canon. But then it turned out good, hence the Nick Fury appearance at the end.

3 tips for your MCU journey: 1. Watch it in release order. 2. Watch out for Stan Lee. He got a cameo in every MCU movie. 3. Watch every after credit scene, except of the trailer after Captain America: The First Avenger. It's too much of a spoiler for the first Avenger movie.

Release order is the key. That's how the audiences saw things, and that's how the stories were written, so that's the general rule on how they should be seen. When "Star Wars" came out, it was just a single movie: "Star Wars." It wasn't common to make sequels back then. (A few franchises, like James Bond, Dirty Harry, and Planet of the Apes did have a series of films, but not so much a continuation of the story.) In the 80s, sequels started to happen with Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Terminator, Alien, and so on, and this really started to catch on because of merchandising and the film industry's development of the summer blockbuster (which happened following "Jaws") and the Christmas blockbuster (which happened following "The Exorcist"). As for Marvel, they have roughly as many features outside of the MCU as in it. I think it's fair to say that all of the MCU films between "Iron Man" and "Avengers: Endgame" are basically one story arc. You can go beyond "Endgame" in the MCU movie series, but "Endgame" is a decent stopping point in the story. As for the movies outside of the MCU, they began with "Blade," "The X-Men," and "Spider-Man," and there's quite a few titles under those three, plus additional films, and then there's the Marvel Netflix series shows that are now on Disney+. The old Netflix Daredevil series could be the best translation of comic book to the screen that we've seen. In general, Marvel has done a terrific job, and has a far bigger and better library than their rival, DC Comics, which unfortunately could never seem to hit their stride, with the exception of the Dark Knight trilogy.

I remember when this movie came out in 2008. We were right in the middle of Nolan's Batman trilogy. The rumor among the comic book nerds was DC's going to do a Justice League movie helmed by Nolan. But the after credit scene with Samuel Jackson talking about Avengers came out of nowhere and we all lost our collective minds. Good times, good times.

The answer was no- they had no interest in doing a team movie, and their heroes were so 'big' that they did not need to team up at all. What changed DC's minds? I don’t think enough attention gets paid to the great acting Jeff Bridges put into Obadiah. He’s been a class act since the 1970s, and he always, always delivers. It’s pretty much a rule that every MCU movie has a mid- or post-credits scene, or both. A couple are scenes from upcoming movies, and one’s literally a trailer, but never turn off an MCU movie until you check for them.

Ironman started originally during the Vietnam War, similar plot to the movie but in the jungle. Making the hero a weapon manufacturer during that time was super ambitious with the antiwar sentiment. Throw in the list of character defects and you start in on the more humanized heroes era.

Wow. The journey you both are about to embark on is wild. To answer your question they had all the MCU movies planned out in “Phases” (phase 1,2,3 etc). Where one would be connected in some ways a major connection or minor or none at all at first but will connect via another movie. That’s why it’s so important to watch the end credits for bonus scenes for hints to what or who is coming next. The beauty is you don’t have to wait like 11 years to watch them all like we did. Happy viewing! When you get to Avengers Endgame it will all be worth it.

It would be difficult - if not impossible - to overstate the reaction the post credit scene got at the original midnight screening (lol miss those, good times). There had been whispers about Samuel L. Jackson possibly appearing, and possibly appearing as Nick Fury (in the Ultimate Marvel comics, they had literally used his likeness for the new version of Nick Fury in that universe). Nobody expected the word "Avengers" to come out of his mouth. Euphoria.

This was MARVELS first inhouse production, they where not owned by Disney yet. The movie was a huge gamble on MARVELs side. They did not know if they ever would make a second movie, let alone the huge franchise that came out of it, but they had an incling that this might hit home, so they decided to set it up. If it bombed, it wouldn't matter but if it hits it works to their benefit. I remember vividly watching this movie in the cinema, it was unbeliveable cool, it hit different than other previous super hero movies and I was immediatly hooked. To this day, this is still one of my favorit super hero movies. The soundtrack is phantastic, to this day, 15 years later, whenever I hear the intro to Back in Black (AC/DC) I see the opening scene of this movie in the theatre of my mind, the HUMVEEs coming down the desert road, so iconic.

Their plan was to make each movie as good as they could, they took out a risky loan to make these movies so they were trying to avoid going bankrupt, and hopefully they could make an Avengers movie. Avengers (2012) completely changed the Cinema landscape, so they were able to plan further ahead after that.

They could never have foreseen just how much this would become, but they were hoping they would get to do an Avengers movie. The deal was that Marvel had licensed out all of their most popular characters to other studios, Spider-man, The Fantastic Four, the X-Men, etc. The Avengers were considered the B-tier heroes and they were concerned they wouldn't be able to have the pull of other heroes. Iron Man was a perfect place to start. He doesn't have super powers and this was all tech based, so it was more digestible by a larger audience. RDJ was a huge risk, but ultimately he was so perfect for this.

Robert D. Junior absolutely nailed it as Tony Stark in this movie. He was a washed up , drugged out actor and became a world super star actor in this film . So they had a rough idea what they were going for with the MCU. But they had to get to certain milestones first...and so the first 6 films you're going to watch are considered "Phase 1" of the MCU. The idea here was to get to The Avengers film and make an ensemble movie a blockbuster mega hit. You had things like the X-Men films still being made at this point by Fox (which is also Marvel, but Fox owned the X-Men IP at the time), and while they are good movies in their own right, one of the issues they suffered from was it being Hugh Jackman's (who played Wolverine) films and everyone else felt like supporting cast...so with Avengers, the plan was to give you solo films to care about the individual, so when they team up it's not one persons movie...its all of theirs. Phase 2 was like "okay, this was a huge hit, now it's time to set everything up for the crazy stuff to come" then Phase 3 is all guns blazing and it's the culmination of everything you watched before coming to a major climax point (Phase 4, is the start a new story arc). Marvel found a way to do what no other movie studio had ever done before...create a series of 20+ movies that all interconnect within itself and make it one of the most lucrative and wholly successful projects in the history of Hollywood. All the while being able to say these films are actually amazing cinema (regardless of what certain directors might think), and not just guilty pleasures people hate to admit they like watching.

Tell me you don't feel like watching more of this after seeing that?... Yeah, that's how we felt when we first saw this at the movies. There's been many super-hero series of films (X-Men, Spiderman, The AMAZING Spiderman, etc...), but the fun part of this series (The MCU), is that they introduce us to a plethora of new characters (most with their own movie), then start doing cross-overs, cameos, and reference one another. Then finally having entire films with ALL of them in them. Plus, most are incredibly well made. Also add post-credit scenes (sometimes multiple) that make it worth staying in your seats after the movie ends, and you've got a fantastic recipe for success. ALWAYS be on the lookout for a Stan Lee cameo in almost EVERY marvel movie. Good for you guys; you'll love this journey.

I seem to remember director Jon Favreau saying that when he saw the scenes involving the suit, he could not tell the difference between the CGI and the actual suit they built (which was quite heavy and they used less of it in subsequent films)

Fun fact: After RDJ and Samuel L. Jackson were cast in these movies, Marvel redesigned the comic book characters to match them. That's why they were a perfect fit.

Slight correction. Nick Fury was modelled after Samuel L. Jackson a few years before he was cast as Nick Fury when Marvel created their Ultimate Universe line of comics, which is the comics line that the MCU was originally based on. Marvel actually contacted Jackson to see if they could use his likeness for the character, and he gave them permission so long as they let him play the character in any movies they may have been planning.

The comic heroes of the 1960s appeared in each others' comic books as co-creator and writer Stan Lee wanted them to inhabit a shared universe, which has grown and grown over the years. That's what makes this film journey so rewarding, as you become very emotionally invested in the characters as they are gradually introduced and interact with one another.. Because this film was a success they were able to fulfil the promise of "The Avenger Initiative" teased in the end-credits scene. I hope you enjoy the series. Iron Man to Endgame tells a great story.

Bruce Wayne said it best in The Dark Night Rises. He told the cop named Robin that the mask isn’t for him the mask and protecting his identity is for his loved ones to keep them safe. That’s a problem when you give away your identity, it’s basically impossible to believe that no villain gets them when they are at home chilling or in Iron Man’s case Tony stark jogging daily in Central Park.

Dummy, the robot, was Stark’s first AI he wrote. Just a mechanical arm to predict what he needs. Very limited and an early basic attempt, but pretty reliable. :-)

The Infinity Saga (Iron Man through Spiderman: Far from Home) is the most impressive accomplishment in film. 23 movies. That might sound like a lot, but by the time it's over, you'll be wanting to see even more (which they are still doing... 32, I think, and counting). None of them are bad, but once you get to movie #9 (Captain America 2), everything thereafter is A++ storytelling, directing, acting, and effects. If you guys decide to watch them all, it will be worth it. I guarantee it.

With Iron Man, Marvel actually had no idea how far they would get with the MCU. This is why Robert Downey jr. Was paid per movie for the first two Iron Man movies. And as a result office agent holding out for a better contract, Robert Downey jr. made almost $180 million from Marvel. But all of the other MCU actors signed $20 and $25 million-dollar contracts for 5 movies. And almost all of the MCU movie storylines came from the actual comics and they also took a lot of suggestions from fans.

When analyzing classic superhero comics and films, one should understand that they all address moral issues, the most important of which is the struggle to be wise and responsible with great power. Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben said it best: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Every MCU film addresses the issue of power and megalomania and personal hubris. The super technology is great, the fight scenes are great, but these films always bring the audience back to the moral issues and dilemmas.

I would love for you guys to react to the sherlock holmes movies with RDJ. Me and a huge number of other people think that's another role that perfectly fits his personality, and the movies are really underrated tbh. (The second movie is actually better than the first one).

When the first Iron Man came out they said the movies were going to be interconnected but it didn't really hit home until the next movie how big they were planning.

Thanks to Stan Lee, there is nearly 40yrs of base line content. (first Ironman Comic came out in 1963). They new the main storyline arc. The movies don't follow the comics exactly of course. But those who wrote these movies had an overlaying story already told in the comics.

As for the Ten Rings guy wearing a prominent ring ... probably that is to symbolize that he is one of the ten terrorist leaders? In the comics there was an Iron Man villain known as the Mandarin, and he was a very weird concept character who wore ten alien rings, each of which gave him a different "blast" type power, like an ice ring, a fire ring ... you get the idea. They tried to break down that character and rationalize him, turning him into a terrorist group called the Ten Rings. As for the spare suit, Rhodey couldn't use it because it didn't have a power plant. As for planning it all out, they had some general ideas, but things changed as they went along. This movie is an amalgam of a couple of key stories in the Iron Man canon, beginning with an update of the 1960s origin.
