I wish Squad would make an update to allow the digging of trenches or foxholes to get cover from mortars, artillery and airstrikes. This mega FOB would be annihilated by a capable commander, but if there were trenches or foxholes available then it would be much more interesting. Vehicles, mortars and commander support calls makes Squad slightly unbalanced in favor of the attacking team, while the digging of trenches, foxholes and machinegun nests would give the defenders a nice boost.
@AdvocateofOdin4 жыл бұрын
foxholes and trenches would work for mortars, but artillery just deletes everything.
@395leandro4 жыл бұрын
@@AdvocateofOdin Artillery definitely suppresses people hiding inside holes, but unless a shell hits precisely inside the trench it's not going to actually kill people. Fuses that burst in the air though would definitely work, so that could be a nice balance to the addition of trenches and foxholes. I used to be an artillery piece (howitzer) commander in the Brazilian Army (3rd Sergeant) within a battery that was attached to a mountain light-infantry brigade (4GACM-L/4BIM-L) that has been deployed to actual combat and what I've learned during training and exercises is that short artillery salvos (fire missions) like we see in Squad isn't effective against fortified entrenchments unless you use concentrated, massed and long duration fire, preferably with larger calibers so if it hits near the trench it will gradually demolish its walls. The shock also can damage a human being, especially if exposed to a very long bombardment. However, the 30 seconds or so long salvos that we see in the game would not be enough, unless extremely accurate. It would be nice if you would have to have multiple SLs call multiple strikes to actually clear a large entrenched position or at least drive the enemy away. Alternatively an update bringing trenches could also come with time ground-proximity fuses, larger bombs (I believe the US has the MOAB, JDAM and other ordinance designed to counter Taliban entrenchments), laser designation for very high precision strikes, etc. I just wish for more content in the game, really. More possibilities for deploying material in the field is always nice. Being a former military serviceman I really love realistic games such as Squad and Arma.

@AdvocateofOdin4 жыл бұрын
@@395leandro huh, i guess i overestimate the destructive potential of artillery, or at least the accuracy. I guess you're right; i assumed that since artillery deletes everything above ground, dirt wouldn't be too big of a deal. Sadly, trenches would require probably a reworking of the whole game, fun to think about though. Maybe for very certain layers as an alternative to Invasion, or as a very map specific game mode.
@395leandro4 жыл бұрын
@@AdvocateofOdin Regular artillery is surprisingly precise, especially with modern field computers for fire solutions. However hitting small 1m x 1m holes or even larger trenches is no easy feat even for guided munitions. Anything above ground really gets deleted with ease, but you'd be surprised as for how tough trench walls can be, the dirt absorb redirect up the blast really easily. Really large shells may demolish and wear down the trench over time, but only a direct hit actually kills the men inside. Yeah, it would definitely disrupt the current meta. I also don't think that the way their terrain mesh works would allow for players to dig-down (contrary to building up structures above ground). It would be easier to create maps with trenches and holes pre-constructed to create a game mode with a premise of giving a really strong defensive position to insurgents, for instance, and then have the advanced army use their resources intelligently to take those positions and push the enemy back, although it would become almost a WW1 game lol.

No it's not. It takes 1 guy on the enemy team to jump on the mortar and make the FOB absolutely useless. Combine that with Commander UAV and you don't even need to send in any call-ins and have 1 mortar guy constantly drop shells directly on the radio. Hell you could even park a 30mm on a hill and have it lob frags. @@sterlingd1984 Very late reply, but the problem with building defenses is you get trapped inside of them, surrounded, you get farmed by verhicles and indirect fire, and almost guaranteed the enemy commander will drop arty on your head. Building defenses also signals to the enemy 'Our radio and HAB are here! Come destroy them!' and most players are very, very uninterested in defending, and you only need 1 enemy to sneak around to dig your HAB up and it's all over. This 1 man ninja dismantling your HAB and radio happens so often and it's very frustrating. Unbeatable unless you spread out and pay attention for up to 90 minutes straight. But who wants to sit there and wait to maybe get 1 or 2 kills? :p A couple murder holes on top of a hill or building can be pretty good. Camo nets to cover windows so you can shoot out easily. But finding these 'god spots' to build defenses is difficult, and often the enemy just goes around you, and it's very hard to defend 360 degrees, nigh impossible without 2-3 squads/armor support/patient teammates.

This was a good reason not to setup defense on a hilltop. If you notice, they were down the mountain top, and much harder to locate all of them. They used the mountain slope background to help conceal them. You guys skylighted and made for easy targets. Can't wait to get home to download this game I just found out about. @famulanrevengeance30445 ай бұрын
Setting up on the mountain slope is nigh impossible due to how the building mechanics work in the game. It also means you're completely trapped once the enemies return fire. Defenses need a good cone of fire as enemies won't funnel down a small lane. Hiding while a 50 cal is rattling off shots from a bunker emplacement is pointless. It also makes it MUCH easier to get killed by RPGs and other explosives if you're on the mountain slope. Hard to splash people with RPG or explosives when they're on a hilltop. People don't like to look up. You can build on a hill top and have your guys spread around the hill and down the slope to avoid the attention that a big machinegun, AA gun or whatever brings. 'Skylining/skylighting/silhouetting' is not that big of a deal when you're making so much noise. The machinegun bunker will get spotted in seconds no matter where you put it. AT guns is potentially a different story. But if you just set up on a hill watching a road/bridge in the distance, it works pretty well. You will ruin your angle by going down the slope, and you will get splashed by the enemy verhicles much easier.
@monkeystank52414 жыл бұрын

Along with semi-constant smoke barrages, a competent squad lead could've countered this position. But indirect fire bunkers you may argue? Have one guy send 9 mortar rounds, wait a few seconds to let the enemy come out and rebuild, and then have both soldiers each send 9 mortars. Easily could've wiped the mountain.
