If you're like us, then checking out food spots is an important part of sightseeing, especially in places where food is a central part of the culture - such as Singapore. We love our wok hei on the Hokkien Prawn Noodles. The noodles, including the gravy, are prepared in a giant smoking wok that gives it that distinct charred aroma. Another gravy dish similar to this in aroma, is Hor Fun - which is also rice noodles, but flatter.

You are right, the so called carrot cake is actually a mixture of rice flour and radish. The confusion of calling it carrot cake is because in Chinese name, both carrot and radish share a common name, but carrot would often be added “red” before carrot. The black version is the same stuff, but only fried with a dark soya source. Hope you continue to explore and enjoy more variety of local food in Singapore.

The reason why carrot cake is called carrot cake despite being made with radish is because in mandarin(in Singapore), radish is called “white carrot” and regular carrot is called “red carrot”.

When the early Malays invented satay, they didn't know what to call it. The Babas ( children born to Chinese and Malay) who practised Chinese culture and spoke a mix of Malay/Chineseand Hokkien dialect mainly, named the stick of meat (not pork) SATAY because in the hokkien dialect it means "3 pieces of meat" skewered in a stick. Sedap!

Guys, the locals dont use umbrellas in the sun. Those asians you see using umbrellas are likely girls from mainland china. They use them because they are afraid of getting tanned. In china the beauty standard is to be fair. For locals, we enjoy the tan. That is one way of how you tell asians apart in singapore.

The citrus fruit you had is a calamansi. Half way between a lime and a mandarin and probably grown in the Philippines. And yes, you squeeze it over your food to add some tang. Oh, and next time you might think about not having a pork based dish in the Muslim quarter. Much better options include nasi kandar or mutton biriyani.
@ZoeandSimon
@ZoeandSimon 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes we got the tip to specifically try the Hokkien Mee there, but it's true that non-pork dishes are probably a better choice apart from that.

Golden Mile Food Centre is not considered part of Kampong Glam. Like most hawker centres in Singapore, there will be a mix of cuisines there, some of which are locally famous, even if they are non-Muslim stalls. Zoe and Simon were probably tipped off to try that particular stall. Kampong Glam, btw, has its own cuisine delights of course. But even there, there are some non-Muslim food choices which are also renown! (Eg: Blanco Court Prawn Mee and Prince Coffee House, which sells traditional Hainanese fare and is likely to close soon as the owners retire).

The name, carrot cake, was a vocabulary mistake made by hawkers in the past. In the past, Singaporean were generally not so well educated, and many hawkers had only very limited vocabulary of english words. So they mistakenly thought that radish is translated carrot. Because the Hokkien word for radish is 白菜头, which is translated as white carrot in english. However, because we grew up calling this dish carrot cake, we never really bother to change it back to radish cake.
