I'm Portuguese, I still remember stories of my grandmother that her own parents told her because they went to witness the miracle. There was little roads or connections in Portugal during that time, especially in the Beira region where we are from, and thousands of people walked miles and miles across the hills from the most remote towns, just to witness the last miracle as news spread out.

Richard, one of the things that was not mentioned is that Lucia in her later years spent 80 of them in a cloistered convent where she was removed from public view for most of the time. Most people would not go to that extreme to get people to notice them. I do appreciate the way you always give a variety of possibilities to all of the stories

I visited Fatima, Portugal myself years ago and saw old newspaper accounts of people reportedly seeing the "miracle of the sun" from miles away. Just one comment: I don't think you mentioned that Lucia joined the Discalced Carmelites later in life. if you're not familiar with the Discalced Carmelites, they are an order of cloistered nuns who take very strict vows of povery. They sleep on thin straw matresses, fast often, and spend most of their time in silent prayer. In other words, after the incident, she gave up all of the fame, honor, wealth, glory, etc. that would have gone with this for a life of silent contemplation and poverty. If indeed she was making it up, she seems to have taken the hoax to absurd lengths. Compare Fatima to Medjugorje (typically considered a hoax by Vatican officials), where the alleged "seers" seem to have not changed their lives in the slightest.

What happened in Medjugorje in 1981 was real, geez they even had needles stuck into the kids while in ecstasy with the Madonna with zero reaction, tested by scientists. I have been to Medjugorje maybe 5 times and it's a beautiful feeling there, especially where she appeared on apparition hill, there have been many documented miracle happen there. Ironically though, one month after this event, the October Revolution took place in Russia, and that actually was the beginning of the end of the World War, as one of the major participants pulled out of it and the threat of other revolutions began to force the others to begin seeking peace. Although I understand you need to keep it short, I'd say you are leaving out several important points. For instance, you fail to mention the previous appearances of the "Angel of Portugal" to prepare the childs for the encounter. They were also harassed by the authorities, incarcerated and misstreated by their own family. Finally, Lucia went on to become a nun. Apart from that, the figure, its behaviour, the sounds and lights surrounding It, everything follows the general structure of this type of events/Marian Apparitions. Finally, there are several blurry pictures from the "Miracle of the Sun" and a famous chronicle of the event by a science professor from the University of Coimbra. He was a non-believer and his testimony is really worthy. Finally, I really appreciate your channel, it's definitely one of the very best around! Thank you for It and keep Up the good work! Cheers!!

What puzzles me, is that it happened in 1917, right at the end of Portuguese monarchy and when leninist socialism menaced to swoop over Portugal. Which makes me believe there was a geopolitical intent behind this odd manifestation. I think there was an otherwordly intelligence behind it, trying to pass as biblical to enforce an agenda of utmost importance. Many details make me say that: the theological innacuracies told by the figure, the non-religious nature of the miracle itself, the raining of "angel hair" which is something typically associated with UFOs, the near instant dry up, the impossible maneuvers which can't be held responsible to a astronomical or meteorological phenomena... I don't really think it's pareidolia or mass hysteria either, as the manifestation left anomalous imprint on the physical plan of reality, too... If it was an egregor formed by the collective fervor of the religious crowd, then how come it reached the perception of non-believers and escaped certain believers?

Back in the 1950s, there was a similar case that happened in Puerto Rico in the town of Sabana Grande. There were 3 children also, who claimed that they saw and talked with the Virgin Mary yet nobody else could see her. There were "miracles" like a dancing sun, people being healed, and of course crowds of over 150000 people who invaded the area just to see the virgin as she said that she would return in a month or so. The Catholic Church never granted their blessings to this apparition, yet there is a Chapel and a shrine built on site.

The intelligent thing to do is always keep an open mind. However you must realize that whatever side of the argument has the most compelling evidence to support it is the logical one to stand by, at least until sufficient evidence is produced to contradict it. There's a reason that this is the logic used in a court of law and it should be no different in religion or anything else for that matter. One of the most important things you need to understand about the human brain is that we have a defense mechanism that can cause us to rationalize things in a way that makes sense, even if in reality it does not. If you truly want to believe in something (and it's clear in this case that you do), you will often suffer from confirmation bias whether you realize it or not. If there are any specific things that you are unsure about that your religion typically preaches against yet is accepted in the scientific world (like evolution for example) I advise you to ask about them. No matter what it is, EVERYTHING should be able to hold up to scrutiny. If btw you would like to know how macro evolution works for example I can explain it to you.

Human beings don’t know in advance unless God chooses to let them know in advance. 70,000 people is a lot of people. But this happened in a rural area at a time when photographic and communication technology was far more primitive. It would have taken time for news of this event to reach the Vatican. Doesn’t matter what the local church in Fatima thought about the event - the Catholic Church is very hierarchical and judgements regarding the validity of miracles are made by the Vatican, not the local church. So OF COURSE the Vatican had to investigate this after it happened.

There was a documentary on the TV when I was a kid about this, it showed a very isolated town in rural Spain, and some prophecies about apocalyptic signals on the Sky some years later. This never happened. Many years later, I searched for the same story in a spanish program, "Cuarto Milenio", which explained this phenomenon and some other similar sightings in Spain just before the Civil war. In summary, the Church never recognized these apparitions, they studied them in depth, they discussed and concluded it had more connections with the paranormal rather than with the divine. When I was young. Me and my other two friends were watching TV. When I had a sudden urge to look away. And there, I saw a pale figure of a lady, dressed in white. Which appeared to be gliding along the hallway. I quickly told my friends to look, and we all sat in fear. It was in broad daylight. The figure didn't speak or make any sound. It just looked to the side, at us with a smile. And glided down a hallway, dissappearing shortly after. It's clothes were a bit torn, and seemed to be waving about as if there was wind. All of us then quickly ran outside, and never spoke about it again. I also recall the figure having a halo, or a glow above it's head. It surely didn't feel very pleasing. From that day, it never occurred again, neither in dreams.

@@Quole1234 yes it did. In the Fatima apparitions, the Virgin Mary said that if Russia wasn't consecrated, then the country's errors (its communist beliefs) would spread. Russia was not consecrated the way she had asked and communism did end up spreading throughout Europe. She also warned the children that if people didn't amend their ways, a war far worse than WWI would occur. And it did. You are free to be a skeptic or an atheist but your lack of belief doesn't change the message and events of the apparitions.

Alex Turčáni, more like 30 seconds to a minute. I don’t think people ever had to pose for more than a couple of minutes to take a photograph, and photography had already evolved a bit by the 1910’s. Still, the pictures I’ve seen showed nothing of interest. They’re just dirty old photographs of a large crowd and a pretty bare skyline. Sometimes people circle dark spots on a photo and they’re like “Look! It’s a UFO!” But the chemical processes used in development weren’t very refined back then. Those dark spots are usually caused by impurities or some kind of spill.

It's so weird to have a story I heard told all throughout my youth (brought up in a Portuguese catholic school) be given the "Bedtime Stories treatment", I remember that on the anniversary of the event there would be a small procession march around the district and then we would sing hymns in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, and now it features on one of my favourite horror channels. It's the weirdest thing to have something so benign from my childhood feature on a creepy video.

In fact in the gospels when Jesus was teaching the crowds would always be divided between those who believed his message, and those who refused his message and became angry. It's the fundamental divide. In fact, in the gospel of John there is a moment when God speaks from heaven and says "This is my beloved son, listen to him." And it says that some in the crowd said God spoke, others said it was just an earthquake. Great divide between believers and skeptics.

Wow. I've never seen Marian apparitions covered on any other channel and I love it! I'm obsessed with them. All the apparitions pretty much follow a pattern and I'm fascinated by the psychology behind them. There are literally dozens of them but people are mainly only familiar with Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe and in living memory, Medjugorge, which is an ongoing situation. Mass hysteria, cognitive dissonance, especially confirmation bias, etc. are real events that happen all the time. Not to mention the fact that what happened was told in an incredibly inconsistent manner suggests that different people saw different things, and many saw nothing. This is a natural defense mechanism in your brain that we all have. When you truly want to believe something your mind will find a way to rationalize it. I suggest you watch the movie 'The Imposter', as it touches upon this in a real event that occurred. I would also advise you to look up 'The Mandela Effect' which proves that masses can interpret and misremember things in the same, inaccurate way. Hey, I got a question; Where is your religion whenever a child is murdered, raped, dies from an illness, etc.? Why would your god allow that to happen to them and their families? What about natural disasters that kill millions of people every year? How about innocent people that get killed in the crossfire in wars every year? This means that your god either does not have the power to prevent these tragedies, or he doesnt care. This proves in and of itself that your beliefs are wrong.

When I was younger, my grandmother would bring me to Knock, a town in Ireland where the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared in the late 1800s. Author and researcher examined the Fatima events from the perspective of a Close encounter UFO incident. The antics os the "sun" certainly seem very UFO-like. The entity would have appeared according to the beliefs and expectations of people who witnessed it.
