Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet - Book Chat

Just picked this up at a Christian book store in the "secular" bin. Looking forward reading this.

That novel was nicknamed "The Genet Bomb" by Cocteau who knew it was going to be a scandal. James Joyce scrambled to find a copy as did everyone else. My favorite line is his description of a soldier's eyes as blue light reflected from the moon onto a razor as seen through the blown out windows of a factory. The experimental nature of the writing is more important that the story. It's nice to see it get some love here. Fun fact, in his old age the French government asked Genet to publish something inspiring to 'todays youth'. He wrote an essay encouraging boys to rob homes and become thieves as an act of self realization and creativity. You can just imagine the reaction.

It is a tragedy that it has become the trend, the norm, to confound "nobility" with "fame", and to think that "elite" simply means "super rich". A lot of older literature is misread with this confusion in place.

Jean Genet was a great writer and his roman is great but not my favourite. I prefer the Miracle of the Rose or even Querelle from Brest or Pompes Funèbres but you may definite that "Our Lady" (Notre-Dame in french) is the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ's mother and due to the catholicism, many churches, schools, or things in france are called "Notre-Dame" or "Our Lady something"...

I plan on reading Miracle of the Rose at some point. I've read Querelle of Brest and chatted it here on my channel. Loved it.

I wasn't sure what to think of this going in and it took a bit to get my bearings but once it clicked it was pretty amazing :)
