Helena's Hawaiian Food has been around since 1946 and is world famous for having some of the best food in the world! We spent our last day on Oahu enjoying all that Helena's had to offer, from Kalua Pig to Poi *my mouth is watering just thinking about it*. We loved everything that was tried and honestly the only complaint is that we did not eat here every night 😂

You could tell it was the last day. When y’all were in the car it was just so quiet unlike the other times y’all were driving. I think we all know how that feels. It’s the last day of a vacation that you were absolutely enjoying and you just don’t want to leave. Thank you so much for doing all these videos and sharing with us your entire trip. It was so fun to watch.

Poi is honestly understandably harder to like if you eat it by itself. It's purposefully very bland because it's meant to be eaten together with extra salty foods. If you ever feel like trying it again have it together with the kalua pig or with lomilomi salmon.

Yay! Helena's is awesome! I grew up the hill from Helena's and I am part Hawaiian by blood. I love poi! I even like day old or two day old poi, which has a slightly tart flavor. Poi with kalua pig together is the best combination if you want to get used to eating poi. I love lomi salmon as well as chicken long rice. Maybe try those next time. Maybe you already had them at some other places you visited? Thanks for your videos of this trip! I have reservations at Aulani for November!

I like one day old poi because it has the right fermentation to taste good. Three day old poi is too sour for me. I used to scatter salted dried shrimps from China over a bowl of poi and scooped each shrimp with a spoon. Of course the poi comes along with the shrimp.

Just saw Last meal in Hi. Helenas..You guys need Hawn friends to teach you the aquired the taste of poi...after learnd taste of poi,you can eat it straight..if you dipppd Shrt rib in poi n ate that way... whole awesome flavor circumstance on palete...i accually grew up in neighborhood n never ate there...Helenas was on the verge of closing up shop when they was on N King st bcause Helena was lk 80yrs young n their lease was up...public outcry changed owners minds n they reopened at present address..the rest is History...all the Pub n the Food channel showed up,now lines 4daaaays...sooo blessed for Helenas🙏🙏my mom loved PeoplesCafe on Pali hwy..we got our Hawn food from there...Mac salad goes on all local plate lunches...like poi, alone its bland ordinary..but with teriyaki steak plate or a BeefCurry platelunch..its Magical...thats what makes a Hawn local style platelunch...try a LnL Beef teriyaki platelunch...hopefully one close by....about those Shortribs, its only seasond with Hawn salt n fried...but its hung cured over the grill overnight ithink curing that wat makes it..you can get shrtribs season w just Hawn salt(no pepper)n grill over the fire...just as good...i'll watch more..hit me up nxt time in da808...ill show you local hole inda wall plates Alooooooha😎🤙🏽🤙🏽

I have to say, I know this video is old but the reason you don’t like poi is because you’re eating it wrong lol. Poi is meant to dip your meat in. Especially for something that is salty like kalua pig. Take a fork full of pig, dip it in the poi and bam! Perfect combo! You’re never gonna like poi just by itself because it’s not meant to be eaten by itself. so glad you guys are adventurous enough to give it a couple of tries though ❤️🤙🏾

Having grown up w/poi, consider it an essential part of Hawaiian menu. It's been said, that if newborn/toddler had some kind of food allergy, being that it's hypoallergenic, poi could be fed until digestive system was strong enough to handle regular foods. Now that I live in the states, make my own kalua pork in a slow cooker, pork butt, sea salt, liguid smoke wrapped in foil place it in the slow cooker at med for 4-6 hours depending on the weight of the pork. I like eating poi with haupia and/ or sugar 👍🏼 There’s also poi mochi that are fried on the outside and chewy on the inside and poi andagi which is an Okinawan fried donut (crunchier on the outside and denser on the inside than malasadas) Also, I think Helena’s marinades then hangs their pipikaula (pronounced more like pipi-cow-la) for a while before frying it, aging it a bit I guess

Giving props that you tried poi. Next time I suggest you dip the kalua pork in the poi. Or the lau lau. The saltiness of it taste really good. Also, please know that there are different lengths of fermented poi. The longer it has been fermented, or the older it is, it gets sour. Really fresh poi is really sweet. I fed it to my babies mixed with banana. Hopefully next time you can visit the poi farms and try fresh poi. It is also very much a part of our culture.

Local of Hawaii and a big fan of your show! Honestly, love Helena’s. It’s a definite must stop for anyone who is visiting and looking for something authentic Hawaiian! Personally, I like to eat my poi with the kalua pig! Alotta people add sugar to theirs. It’s not for me. But, maybe you can try that. The best Hawaiian food in my opinion is laulau, hands down! But you can’t beat a mixed plate for the local parties lol glad you both had a good time

@@OrdinaryAdventures You two pretty much hit all of the popular places. But, theres another shrimp place just further down from where you had shrimp last time, called “Romy’s Kahuku prawns and shrimp hut”. Its a little red building on the side of the street. They harvest their prawns and shrimp right there from the shrimp ponds around the building. They also sell really good Li Hing Mui Pineapple. “Laverne’s” is another good hawaiian food place. They have a food truck, but it never changes location. Their plate lunches are on the hefty side. But i would defiantly go for their laulau/kalua combo plate! Idk if this is a ridiculous suggestion, because I’m not sure if either of you care for spam, but a cheap 7-11 musubi or a Saimin from Zippy’s is a pretty legit local staple. Other then that, we have plenty of local fusion places. As well as some pretty authentic asian restaurants. I wish you two all the luck on your next adventure to Hawai’i!!

Everything you ate at Helena's, except the poi looks good. That being said, I'd try the poi with the lau lau or hula chicken. The coconut jello looks interesting, glad you said it was tasty. Thanks so much for sharing your HI adventures with us. As has been said before, this trip was well-deserved & I'm glad you had an amazing vacation.

If you come back and eat there again, try the Squid Luau instead of the chicken, it's amazing. There isn't any curry in it. It has coconut milk in it, but no type of curry. You can't go wrong with anything there. Also need to get the lomi lomi salmon.

Poi is meant to be eaten with other salty foods! Don't write off poi for good. Try it with some lomi lomi salmon or the salty pig and start with a smaller amount rather than a spoon, I promise it'll make a difference. Thank you so much for sharing your hawaiian adventures. You have fed my travel appetite and I cannot wait to watch your WDW adventures!

You’re supposed to dip things like the Kailua ports or salmon in with the poi. As I remember, not normally eaten straight, otherwise, it doesn’t take like anything. However, mixed with a salty meat, it’s suppose to actually pop pretty good. Maybe like mixing meat and potatoes.

Miss miss laulau the most. We are temporarily living is So Cal and fortunately we can get laulau at our nearest L&L Hawaiian BBQ in San Dimas along with other Island foods. L&L is a real Hawaiian food chain (originating from the islands} not a copycat. Poi goes good mixed with Lomi Salmon (which you didn't order - next time) also with raw fish like poke, beef stew and corn beef and cabbage and corn beef and onions. I can make most of these dishes here but it hard to get poi around here unless I get it frozen from a specialty store like Tokyo Central. Let me know before your next trip to Hawai'i for some tips.

Poi is actually a palate cleanser. For example, take a bite of the laulau then you either take a beef rib, dip it into the poi or eat a spoonful of poi before yo eat the rib.
