If I'm not mistaken, The Runaways (Joan Jett's origin) was ~7 years earlier for their first album. Instruments and writing. The Go-Gos stand up remarkably well. I always loved that middle 8, especially the bass and vocals parts.

Not really. While the GoGos were the most famous, there were several all girl bands years before them.. Goldie & the Gingerbreads, Fanny, and the Runaways for example.

This song is co-written by Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go’s) and Terry Hall, who was in Fun Boy Three at the time (originally from a band called The Specials). Hall also recorded a version with Fun Boy Three. The album this Go-Go’s version is on has a special distinction that it was the first and only album by an all-female band (in which they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments) to top the Billboard album charts - remaining at number one for six consecutive weeks

Go-Gos came to Seoul, Korea, when I was stationed there in the Army in 84. They rocked the club so hard, we were all up on our feet, bouncing all over the place, such a great memory. What a bunch of kind souls too, going overseas to perform for the troops!

"We Got the Beat" was the Go-Gos most popular song, but I think their best song is "Head Over Heels" then "Vacation" then "Our Lips Are Sealed." I'm a dude, but in 1981, it was unusual and definitely inspirational to young women to see an all girl rock band (even if they were very poppy). You should definitely check out "Head Over Heels."

Go-Go's definitely crossed over to being enjoyed by girls and guys. They were actually considered new wave when this album was released -- and the first song played on FM was 'This Town' -- which may or may not have made it to top 40. But 'Our Lips Our Sealed' really got them noticed on MTV. Wish they had lasted a bit longer, but they were great while they lasted.

Belinda Carlisle went on to a big solo career, "Mad About You" is a great song to check out as well as "Heaven is a Place On Earth. The Bangles were another popular all-girl 80s band, try "Walk Like an Egyptian" or "Manic Monday" which was written by Prince, who offered it to the Bangles.

Thanks for getting to the Go Go's!! Believe it or not, they rose out of that great LA punk scene in the late 70s and decided to become more pop oriented when they realized they had the talent to do so. They were groundbreaking. All females writing and playing their own instruments was not common. And they could PARTY and hang with the most debouched colleagues. Many good tunes left to cover (please) but my fav is This Town from the same LP. It retains some of that punk edge that would be pushed down for more pop-oriented material.

They were very young when they first wrote it, and I was very young when I first heard it. One of maybe a handful of songs that when I hear it, I am taken precisely back to a place and time when I was listening to this in a loud bar with my best friends. Your next 80s song should be Blue Monday by New Order, which was a new wave synth-pop song that will blow your mind! It was revolutionary at that time because that kind of music was unheard of until it came out, and it always packed the dance floor. In 1981 there weren't many all-female bands who played and wrote their own songs--and there weren't ANY who did that had a #1 album (and that might still be true, they might still be the only ones). Most female artists were solo acts or vocal groups. Anyway, this song brings back a lotta great memories, so thanks for checking them out!

Saw them at The Bayfront in St. Pete FL, on July 25 1984. It was a sleepy Wednesday afternoon and me and my cousin had nothing better to do. A little known band called INXS opened for them, i don't have to tell anyone it was one memorable concert. Only time I saw either band. INXS was already a force of nature LIVE. Those where the days!

I grew up going to a great Episcopal church. All of us girls, in the youth group were 14 and loved this catchy song. We changed the lyrics a bit, to Jesus is real, instead of, our lips are sealed. After church one Sunday, everyone gathered in the parish hall, as everyone always did, we set up a cassette player on the stage, and announced we had a special surprise for everyone. We sang our lyrics over the song and danced the choreography we had practiced. Everyone loved it. Yes, cheesy. But, we had fun.

Ah, the early 80s were a great time to be alive. Perfect tune riding the line between rock and new wave. I was in 4th grade when this came out and it brings me back to when my neighbor would be outside cranking this, Billy Squire, The J. Geils Band, Ozzy, Asia, etc. There were quite a few female fronted bands from this era who produced cool sounding music without losing their femininity like Missing Persons, The Motels, Joan Jett, Scandal, Quarterflash, and of course Pat Benatar. All are worth a listen.

The GoGos were referred to once as the Female Beach Boys and The Bangles ( which you did hit once in a livestream with their remake of Simon and Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winter) were the Female Beatles. Mostly in terms of their sound. I do know that when I compile a summer sounds playlist, I always pull in everything by The Beach Boys and everything by the GoGos. There was a good documentary about them in 2020. At one point they were on tour as the opening act for The Police.

The Go-Go's were a good pop band and notable as one of the first all-female bands to emerge from the Los Angeles post-punk era; definitely trailblazers. However, The Bangles, another L.A. based all-female rock band that came out a couple years after the Go-Go's, were even better. Like the Go-Go's, they wrote their own songs and played their instruments, but they rocked harder, both on record and especially live. Best songs to check out: "The Hero Takes A Fall", "Going Down To Liverpool" and "Walk Like An Egyptian". Also, "Manic Monday", a huge hit written especially for them by one of their superfans, Prince.

My mom had this cassette in her car for a couple years, it never left her car, this was my 7th grade year, totally iconic, we had new great songs weekly back in my day!

That beat still as catchy and groovy more than 40 years later. Like you said, such a fun song. The title lyric of "our lips are sealed" was often misheard and sung as "Alex the seal" or "Alex I'll see you" by countless people back then.

There’s so much high-quality songcraft going on in this song, so much that makes it unique. It really stood out from much of the run of the mill stuff one heard on the radio in the 80s.

Hey guys. Another great 80s female artist is Lita ford. You should definitely check her out. She’s one of the few female metal/hard rock signers and guitar players. Do a live performance. Oh yeah and she is HOT!
