This song is co-written by Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go’s) and Terry Hall, who was in Fun Boy Three at the time (originally from a band called The Specials). Hall also recorded a version with Fun Boy Three. The album this Go-Go’s version is on has a special distinction that it was the first and only album by an all-female band (in which they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments) to top the Billboard album charts - remaining at number one for six consecutive weeks

"We Got the Beat" was the Go-Gos most popular song, but I think their best song is "Head Over Heels" then "Vacation" then "Our Lips Are Sealed." I'm a dude, but in 1981, it was unusual and definitely inspirational to young women to see an all girl rock band (even if they were very poppy). You should definitely check out "Head Over Heels."

Go-Go's definitely crossed over to being enjoyed by girls and guys. They were actually considered new wave when this album was released -- and the first song played on FM was 'This Town' -- which may or may not have made it to top 40. But 'Our Lips Our Sealed' really got them noticed on MTV. Wish they had lasted a bit longer, but they were great while they lasted.

Definitely one of the greatest pop songs of the 80s. "We Got the Beat" and "Vacation" are the next ones to check out. Belinda Carlisle went on to a big solo career, "Mad About You" is a great song to check out as well as "Heaven is a Place On Earth. The Bangles were another popular all-girl 80s band, try "Walk Like an Egyptian" or "Manic Monday" which was written by Prince, who offered it to the Bangles.

If music could express what it is to feel happy about something - this song does that. Serotonin for the noggin!!! They were very young when they first wrote it, and I was very young when I first heard it. One of maybe a handful of songs that when I hear it, I am taken precisely back to a place and time when I was listening to this in a loud bar with my best friends. I am literally there, I will always have this memory. I am smiling right now. 🙂

Thanks for getting to the Go Go's!! Believe it or not, they rose out of that great LA punk scene in the late 70s and decided to become more pop oriented when they realized they had the talent to do so. They were groundbreaking. All females writing and playing their own instruments was not common. And they could PARTY and hang with the most debouched colleagues. Many good tunes left to cover (please) but my fav is This Town from the same LP. It retains some of that punk edge that would be pushed down for more pop-oriented material.

I grew up going to a great Episcopal church. All of us girls, in the youth group were 14 and loved this catchy song. We changed the lyrics a bit, to Jesus is real, instead of, our lips are sealed. After church one Sunday, everyone gathered in the parish hall, as everyone always did, we set up a cassette player on the stage, and announced we had a special surprise for everyone. We sang our lyrics over the song and danced the choreography we had practiced. Everyone loved it. Yes, cheesy. But, we had fun.

Your next 80s song should be Blue Monday by New Order, which was a new wave synth-pop song that will blow your mind! It was revolutionary at that time because that kind of music was unheard of until it came out, and it always packed the dance floor. The Go-Go's were a good pop band and notable as one of the first all-female bands to emerge from the Los Angeles post-punk era; definitely trailblazers. However, The Bangles, another L.A. based all-female rock band that came out a couple years after the Go-Go's, were even better. Like the Go-Go's, they wrote their own songs and played their instruments, but they rocked harder, both on record and especially live. Best songs to check out: "The Hero Takes A Fall", "Going Down To Liverpool" and "Walk Like An Egyptian". Also, "Manic Monday", a huge hit written especially for them by one of their superfans, Prince.

I was in 4th grade when this came out and it brings me back to when my neighbor would be outside cranking this, Billy Squire, The J. Geils Band, Ozzy, Asia, etc. There were quite a few female fronted bands from this era who produced cool sounding music without losing their femininity like Missing Persons, The Motels, Joan Jett, Scandal, Quarterflash, and of course Pat Benatar. Thanks, Andy and Alex! 💎 The Go-Go's have some good ones... "Turn to You" has Rob Lowe in the music video. "Vacation" and "We Got the Beat" everyone has probably heard. "Head Over Heels" is my favorite, I think.

Hey guys. Another great 80s female artist is Lita ford. You should definitely check her out. She’s one of the few female metal/hard rock signers and guitar players. Do a live performance. Oh yeah and she is HOT!

The other 1980s girl group-the Bangles. Let me recommend 3 bangers from their first LP, which was before they took a softer, pop sound that yielded several big hits. These 3 songs weren’t hits, but they are 80s bangers: “Hero Takes a Fall” “Dover” “Going Down to Liverpool”

Nice shoutout. I love this album, and their first EP when they were the Bangs. While I'm good with most of their later pop hits, I love those first 2 records.

Ugh!! Just missed the live stream!! This is probably a Top 10 80's song! An all woman band that came out of L.A.'s punk scene, I think their main song writer was Jane Wieldin(?), the bassist. Super influential! Boys liked them too!! LOL!!

Started as a punk band. Lead singer, Belinda Carlisle, was brought into a band to play an instrument she didn’t even know. First-award winning girl group to play their own instruments and write their own songs. Fun documentary is available.
