How improvised Barotrauma works -
Each week my long form improv comedy buddies get together to play ONE round of Barotrauma with the intent to create one full story. A story with a beginning, middle and end. After doing this on stage for years, we decided to take the same improv principles and use them to create entire shows inside the world of Barotrauma.
Here are some loose "rules" that have helped us in creating the most fun we can in one round of Barotrauma. I hope they help you find the fun friends!
How "Improvised Barotrauma" works for us -
Treat It Real -
This is the best way for me to explain to new roleplayers how to get the most fun out of Improvised Barotrauma. Just treat everything you see and hear like it's real! React like you would in real life, and you'll be having a blast in no time! If you treat it like a video game, you'll play it like a video game.
REACT TO DANGER - This one is huge but simple. Fear for your life at all times. Without the fear of death, nothing matters. If you get smacked, act like it!
The Mission - The mission is the crew's overall in-game goal. Barotrauma has an endless amount of scenarios to choose from but in reality, they're just backdrops to the stories that develop naturally each round. The "mission" can sometimes mean everything for the story and other times can be dismissed completely.
Yes, And -
If you listen closely we are going out of our way to agree to people's realities as they see it, and then expanding on it. In today's video, Captain Rubin announces he'll be doing an inspection. When I first meet Colticom, he's chewing food loudly. He's TELLING ME without TELLING ME this is how he's "playing" with the idea that there's an inspection. He's gonna be messy. I hear his gross chewing and immediately call out that he's getting crumbs everywhere. I heighten this idea by "noticing" sticky stuff on the Reactor, and then finally the back room is filled with trash and a horrible smell. WE ARE NOT READY FOR INSPECTION. You can see how Colticom plays with this as the story continues.
DEATH -
If you die and you choose to stay the same character, you are sent from the cloner facility with the memory that you were on vacation. You have ZERO memory of what happened before. The crew MUST remove your body and ID before you see it, otherwise this could cause psychotic breaks putting us all in danger.
If you die, you also have the option to come as a completely new character, with limited, to no knowledge of what was happening before you died. Really whatever serves the scene you are trying to set up. In this video, Colticom dies off screen so we never got to finish our little story. Which is perfect! He decides to come back as AI assistant and the storyline changes dramatically in a different direction. Stories do this.
This weeks episode reflects how good of a time we're all having in our own little universe. We manage to keep it grounded even at the most goofiest times. My life couldn't be this entertaining without my friends WaRDooR, RegulationD, ElPolloDiablo, V3in, WooWee, and ‪@COLTICOM‬! The best crew a guy could ask for!
