Im sincerely sorry for your family's loss, Link. My uncle passed a month ago due to health complications as well, and my grandma will be gone 2 years this June. I'm still navigating my grief and loss, its a lot within 2 years. Navigating it all pretty much by myself, but I'm pushing through I guess... I hope this doesn't weigh heavy on your heart for too long, it sounds like you had a good time with Lewis and I think its important to embrace that and think of those good times as much as possible.

I’d love to leave genuine videos for my descendants, such cross-generational communication and understanding is something I’m sad I’ll never experience. All I have are broken stories of great grandparents, old pictures of people long forgotten, and historical records. I know them on a factual basis. However with my descendants, man would it be cool for some kid in 2300 to hear his ancestor speak, tell stories of their world, etc. What a gift.

When I was about 20yrs old, sophomore in college, I started keeping a diary. I'm now 25 and I'm still doing it. I have filled up many notebooks, hundreds and hundreds of pages. (Maybe thousands.) I do this as a form of therapy and to keep track all the things that have happened to me. But it is also my way of leaving my legacy. I hope my family reads my diaries after I'm gone.

I have always been looked down at by my family because I refuse to call him my dad and/or stepdad; I have sometimes said stepdad in settings where the explanation is not worth it, but I generally refer to him as my mom's husband. That's what he is to me, but it doesn't mean that I don't have love or appreciation for him. My mom passed after having a stroke, then catching COVID. Her body was already weak from the stroke and COVID just pummeled it further. She did end up beating covid, but lost all mobility and cognition and was in hospice care for a year before her body finally gave out. When people say "Oh, it only affects old sick people." don't take into consideration how much people suffer before they die from this virus and how much their family suffers. We couldn't visit her and could only have scheduled Skype/virtual visits for 15 minutes at a time for over a year. We could not be there when she took her final breaths, to hug her or say goodbye. Please get vaccinated if you give any fvcks about other human beings and your family. Happy Mother's Day.

I'm actually planning to do something crazy at the end of my life. Not CRAZY crazy, but I'd hate to die in hospital bed after years of dementia and complete helplessness at the age of 90+ ("thanks" to modern medical care). It sounds nightmarish. I'd prefer to go on a journey without return. See some places, enjoy the scenery and die on a hike or something like that. I also like how my grandfather died. He had sudden burst of energy in the morning (as my grandma told) and was working in his garden until noon, got winded a bit, sat on the bench to catch a breath and died. Nothing special I guess, but that's near perfect death.

I’ve always enjoyed your stories about Lewis, especially his catchphrase. One of my favourite Ear Biscuits to revisit is the thanksgiving when he and your mother were invited to your father’s for dinner and he gave the meal his seal of approval with that catchphrase. After hearing Chase’s dad on GMM this week, I thought about how much fun it would be to hear Lewis say a dart throw was “good, good, good!” It was shortly after that I heard this Ear Biscuit. I will say if you're ever at a funeral and the pastor starts evangelizing, don't be too quick to place that burden all on them. They are sometimes obligated by what the family or especially the deceased one requests. As a pastor my dad's had specific phrasing, preaching styles, and passages requested. It can be hard to deny requests from a terminal or aging congregation member, especially when it's a deathbed conversation.
