I've spent thousands of dollars on GW minis. Now I'm printing most my minis and terrain. A lot of my stl files are GW adjacent. As long as they are 10% different, they are completely fine. I don't play in tournaments or hobby shops. To be honest, I have every 40k army and have only played one game since 3rd edition. 3rd printing has changed my hobby. Especially D&D and RPGs.

It’s definitely a game changer for RPGs and D&D. So many options now!

55:39 - A lot of people say that getting a 3D printer means you basically have the new hobby "3D printing stuff" alongside collecting minis, but for some people you actually get *two* new hobbies; 3D printing stuff, and _telling other people on the internet that they should get a 3D printer,_ lol

Best thing i have discovered about Resin is getting the small bottles for creating effects while painting. The clear stuff with a UV hand torch ro harden... so many fun effects can be created with that and paints.

I actually use this stuff, and I love it too. I have tried GSW and AK water effects, and it's pretty fun. I don't even get it in my eyes! - Olly

As the recipient of Benjis original Elegoo printer i agree that it is a hobby in it's own right. I've loved printing chapter specific accessories and models from other companies but agree that it doesnt interest me to print 'copies'. Its a fantastic bit of kit and the newer models seem to be easier to use and can fit more on the build plate. Id love to print terrain as i see that as a huge platform for printers but probably best on an FDM anyway. Great episode as always - keep em coming 🐻

Glad it’s been of use to you! It’s definitely a bit dated now compared to some other printers out there! Terrain is definitely better on an FDM!

Yeah I definitely have a love hate relationship with 3d printing, I have an entry level Anycubic resin printer. I love that I can just print off whatever I want, but I hate the smell (stinks out he place) and it doesn't matter how much ppe I wear it always seems to mess with my skin. Really enjoyed this guys, I will get round to watching all the rest his week 😊

Brittleness depends 100% on the Resin. ABS-Like Waterwashable which si less than 20 Euro for a kg/l is basically completely on par with HIPS Plastic. And if you get a Userfirendly printer like the GK2 or GK3 its basically plug and play.

You see, this is why I maintain there is a big disconnect between the average person, the realistic 3D printer, and the 3D printing evangelist. Thinking you need, or should recommend, an 800 dollar or 1300 dollar 3D printer is kinda funny. It's like anime kids who think the best way to introduce someone to the thing they like is 350 episodes of Dragon Ball Z. A Mars 5/Ultra is a perfect, and affordable, start to 3D printing that is very user friendly that will then live up to the increased quality concept as the user gets more experience.

@@scannerbarkly Mate its not that much more than getting into a new game system or buying a ToW or 40k Army. It might not be in your budget and that sucks it is however still not an outrageous amount, and the GK2 runs about 500 euros atm.

I've printed about ten One Page Rules armies with my bambu a1, and they look damn good. Saying that Resin does look so damn good. But bamvu slicer is simply amazing, especially with their in slicer lookup print items. OPR and Cast N Play are excellent mini sources.

Great conversation lads. I appreciate the nuanced discussion. Our local gaming store recently closed and whilst I can’t blame 3D printing. It certainly played a part. I print a lot of models to proxy for MESBG but I still purchase official models too. The KS I ran a couple years ago resulted in me needing to 3D print over 6000 resin pieces from my home office. That’s enough to put you off resin 3D printing for life 😂
@SideQuestsYoutube
@SideQuestsYoutube Ай бұрын
Haha, 6000! Yeah, I’d be out too at that point. 😅 I think it’s easy for people to blend official and unofficial stuff-it totally makes sense. If we ever got to the point where there was more unofficial than official, I think GW would have to make some big changes. I don’t see it happening anytime soon, but who knows? Definitely an interesting idea!

I don't own a 3D printer and I don't think I ever will. I can see the benefits of having one for basing bits etc but the room it would need, set up costs for me as I don't own a computer either means I don't think I would ever see a return on the out lay. However I love 3D printed minis and have bought a fair few of them. I love Stationforge's Grim Guard range for DKOK proxies 😊

It’s one of those where if you’ve already got some of the infrastructure there to do it it’s not bad. But when you need additional space, a new PC, all of the tools etc it certainly starts adding up and not as cost effective as people make you think.

I still buy a ton of GW models so don't feel particularly bad about 3D printing as basically they're getting as much of my disposable income as they're ever likely to get. But stuff like Forgeworld models that are massively overpriced I have no issues printing copies of. Same with out of print or unavailable models. I agree though it is absolutely a hobby in and of itself and I hate the 3D printing bros going on like it's super easy when there's multiple skills involved. I think a lot of the mess is avoidable with care, knowledge and the proper PPE but there's nowhere near enough information about this stuff out there. There's people out there with long term health issues caused by resins.

I was one of those "just had a kid and can't leave the wife alone with a new baby and a toddler for the weekend" peeps who couldn't make the event, but I'll be back again next year once they're old enough to spend the weekend with their grandparents and the wife can take advantage of the hotel while I play games 😅

Is there a hardline on 3d printing? I'm going with: it's bad if it's a crime. Like scanning models that are actually being produced. Abandoned IPs is ok. Live ones it's not.
@SideQuestsYoutube
@SideQuestsYoutube Ай бұрын
It’s all very grey - it’s not the 3D printing necessarily that’s bad, it’s what’s printed. Our discussion was very opinion based, whereas the legality is very grey and would need to go through the courts to decide what is truly ‘illegal’. Direct copies definitely infringe on copyright and whether that applies to long out of production models is still questionable. All very grey and murky!
@caiohcoutinho
@caiohcoutinho Ай бұрын
Totally agree. 3d printing it's just the tool after all. In the extreme, we could email the owner and ask if it's okay to print the IP and if the answer is yes, then we're good hehehe

As an Asian player where miniature wargames are not so popular while BANDAI or TAMIYA producing very affordable but better models than GW, it's really hard for FLGS to survive here. New player won't stay long enough to have their 2000pt army, it just cost too much money and time. Old players are mostly rich guys, they still need new players to play with. If proxy 3rd party models or 3D printed models are 100% a NO from the store owner, pretty much the store won't last long. You always need newcomer no matter what. I myself is one of the guy who can't build a pure blood 2000pt army, but I purchase all supplement like paint or brush from FLGS to support them. GW totoally have the ability to make Warhammer costumer-friendly, but they choose to keep the market small for easier controlling. I don't see that's a long term stratage.

maybe not in Asia, but they've managed to stubbornly stick to their guns with increasing profits so I dunno, I still think they are shortsighted but it doesn't seem like its doing any harm at the moment and probably not for the next 10+ years
