It's nice to hear from some people who aren't interested in the Golden Demon competition. Seems everyone is trying to be amazing painters. I'm happy with just getting stuff on the table. Maybe it isn't award winning but I do find it meditative and calming. Thanks for a different perspective.

I think the internet creates this illusion that you need to be a top painter, but the vast, VAST majority of people just do it as a hobby and are happy with tabletop standard 😊 Glad we could offer a different perspective!

I really wish more content creators highlighted the points you made here. Especially to newer hobbyists, that only paintjng for a couple of hours IS the norm, as its so easily forgotten how little time most people have (exampled by yourselves) to actually hobby. Its a doom spiral to chase 'the perfect model' when the process on videos is often so warped to obtain views and likes. Great podcast. Down to earth. Have my sub for both channels 👍

Although I don't completely agree with everything, I really enjoyed this one. Some really well-thought-out and valid opinions and a really great listen. Most importantly, I think this is really a positive conversation, especially for newer hobbyists to hear. I think when you do paint for competitions, you generally end up being surrounded by display painters or people who aspire to be display painters so you end up within a bubble of like minded people and it's easy to forget your words can reach a larger audience. Anyway, really great episode gents!

seeing other peoples work can be inspirational but it can also be that trap 'im never going to achieve this' and put you off even getting started. i thought about trying a competition entry but im just blown away by the 'standard' and again in that trap. so now i just paint because i enjoy it.

Why do I hobby/paint? I do it for fun. It's my hobby, the buzz of finishing a model/unit and then seeing them played on a tabletop is the hokey cokey for me. Will I ever win a painting comp...probably not. Do I want to get better, I'd be lying if I didn't but it's not the be all and end all, should always learning. Nice to be praised on any paint jobs I do of course but so long as I'm happy I'm really not bothered. Little Bear is the same, he used to get very deflated, comparing paint jobs and once we talked about it he agrees and sticks two fingers up (he doesnt he's still too young 😂) at anyone that might have anything negative to say. We've all got to learn somehow, it takes longer for some than others. I digress (side quest 😜) - my hobby is for me because it's fun to do. 🐻 PS - nice to Dave and Tony 👍

Great chat, with one of my fave creators on YT. For me, GD isn't a fair competition. I do paint for display and have got back to competition work, but will only enter those where everyone is painting the same piece and there is no modification. That comes down to artistry and ability on that model. The few competitions for that are always using busts or larger scale figures as they are a better format for that.

I entered golden demon for the first time this year, and it will be the last. I have no hate, but I was a bit underwhelmed- probably for different reasons than most. I went in with the intention of not winning. I wanted to showcase something different. Sadly lighting was pretty naff so it didnt show it off as well as I’d hoped and cos it was obviously wank in comparison to basically everyone else it immediately got shoved at the bottom of the cabinets and no one got to see how cool gilding looked. I spent like 200 hrs on it, and that not only made it a slog that dragged over 9 months but the end result was not worth the effort (not the model, its epic, the best thing ive ever painted, but the experience of entering the competition). I was maybe a bit misguided. I dont regret it, its an experience, live and learn, i know now its not for me. Side note, i did feel amazing when they handed my model back and commented how memorable it was. That was the only highlight, to actually get a snippet of feedback, and it felt like high praise.

Gosh, it’s just bad form, and sour grapes,for competitors to complain about judging. I entered a painting comp years ago and got a couple of prizes from a much smaller pool of entries. I entered last year and the quality was sky high and the winners were very well deserved.Stylistically I thought mine was better than the 2nd place but its opinion and I’m not the judge. I’m sure everyone gave it their best.

Have you ever tried making videos for KZbin or the internet? I’m guessing not, because I can’t really agree with your take. The term 'clickbait' gets thrown around a lot, but I don’t think people use it the way they should. There’s a big difference between lying about content or making bad videos, and simply trying to find ways to get noticed.
