(spoilers on the ending.) to be honest, if JD lived at the end, he and veronica might have made up. but here's my theory as to why JD went crazy: JD had moved over and over, his mom died and he and his dad, according to JD, didn't talk much. he was never taught to love, until Veronica comes along, sees him fighting, and falls in love. She gives him more love than he's ever really felt in his life, and he wants to hold onto this. JD probably didn't know how to love properly, so he starts killing anyone that gets in his way or hurt veronica, so she dumps him. he's hurt by this, and he's so in love with veronica, that he tries to blame it on the entire school instead of her. he tries to bomb her, veronica stops him, and he ends up realizing what he's done. he takes a bomb and lights it up, ending it all, but before that he tells her he worships her and loves her, veronica tells him to stop, but then she ends up respecting his wishes and leaving the room, thus living. I honestly think if he was more loved by his parent, he wouldn't have gone crazy for veronica and grasped on to her so tightly. but that's my theory. do any of you agree??

on top of that JD is also just extremely bitter at the world from all his hardship with his mom and recognizes society's hypocritical nature of martyring rather than discussing/bring awareness to issues like suicide. that was the whole point the movie was trying to make, it was a commentary on society's romanticization/glamorization of issues esp. prevalent in highschool like social hierarchies and suicide and also broke the stereotypical mold of most highschool movies by providing an unconventional antihero. Veronica was actually planned to be only slightly more moral than JD but ryder's portrayal made her character a lot more sympathetic and the musical furthered this even more. the musical took the movie in a different direction in this sense, because it focused on JD and Veronica's romance more, but the movie was more of a commentary on the state of society. Your theory is definitely part of JD's crazy behavior as well :-)
