My interview with Shawn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3u9Z3SuaL-kqLs *OTHER NOTES* -I know I "look tired" in this video. I'm not actually tired; I just didn't set up the lighting properly so an excessive shadow was cast under my eyelids. I already learned how to fix this, so it shouldn't happen again in the future. (There are two videos I filmed but haven't released yet that I filmed before learning how to fix the shadow, so I'm actually going to look "tired" in the next couple videos as well lol) -Correction: at 11:35, the English translation for 暖房 should be "indoor heater", not "closet". Then, at 11:36, the English translation for "段ボール" should be "cardboard", not "indoor heater". I copied the entry for "closet" so I wouldn't need to redo the formatting, but then changed "cardboard" instead of "closet" to "indoor heater" 😅

My dad went on a work trip to China some years ago. He said everyone kept saying the N-word and he and his coworkers found it hilarious. They were most likely saying 那个, which is sometimes pronounced as "nèi ge" and used as a filler word.

So here is a story.... A friend of mine had to attend a funeral in Japan. Now I'm not really sure of the details of japan funeral customs but there something about a bowl of ashes and some chopsticks. So the attendees in the line would go to the ashes and say...いってきます(ittekimasu:≈ farewell...≈I'm leaving) I'm not sure why they use ittekimasu here ...but the friend who not only nervous. Couldn't quite understand what was going on in the line ahead of them. So it is finally his turn and he sees the bowl of ashes and the chopsticks and remembers everyone saying...itta something.... He didn't want to be disrespectful so he took the chopsticks and said いっただきます!( Ittadakimasu: ≈im going to eat it) 😂😂😂 There wasn't enough water to cleanse his mouth or his life from the embarrassment 😂😂😂😭😭😭

I was chatting in english with a couple of Japanese women in a smoking lounge in a casino. They were both young and attractive and their english was decent albeit broken and they both spoke with an accent that was extremely thick and difficult to understand, especially in a crowded smoking area where there were a lot of people drinking and talking over each other. I asked them how old they were and they wouldn't tell me. I explained to them that asking someone's age is a fairly common question in Australia. So then I asked them what are some common questions that you get asked in Japan and one of the women said "people often ask 'what's my bra-size'". I was so confused when she said this, and tried to think what she meant by it. Was she being flirty? Was this just a cultural thing? Was she just making a joke? Whatever the case was I didn't want to ignore it, so then I asked her, "so what's your bra-size?" The moment I said this, both the women looked at me in confusion and said "what!?" And so I was like, "wait, what did YOU say?" and then she repeated herself slowly. It turns out that she wasn't saying "bra-size" she was saying "blood-type". Because her accent was so heavy it sounded like bra-size to me. I immediately turned red in the face and started apologising profusely. I was too embarrassed to continue the conversation and sheepishly excused myself.

So my story is pretty embarrassing but it wasn't so much about words, but rather about my cousin's name. I'm a quarter Japanese, and the first time I came to Japan, I was visiting my great aunt's house in Saitama, with my mom and my grandma. One of my cousins offered to buy us food, and drinks, and, of course, I got chuhai. So I was talking with my great aunt and grandma in my terrible Japanese, and trying to follow along in their conversations. My Japanese at this point was probably at just passing N5 level anyway, so I was basically just nodding along and pretending to understand. Anyway, something came up, and in my buzzed state, I mispronounced my cousin's name (He had gone upstairs to their side of the duplex they lived in, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been). His name is Shintaro... and I said "Chintaro". My great aunt just stared at me, but my grandma was cracking up.

I can relate to the Light Novel writing thing lol. Even though my Japanese is still very beginner level, I have a problem where I'll sometimes say things in an unnecessarily poetic manner because when I can't remember how to say something properly, I just go with the good ol' "say things slowly without all the words and correct verb conjugations and expect it to make sense"... except I read a lot of 俳句, so I end up speaking in a metaphorical manner a lot lol.

I was born and raised in the US. So, unless I go through the giant hassle of immigrating to another country, by default I continue to live in the US. I guess I never wanted to live in Japan badly enough to go through that hassle.

So one time when I was in Japan around the time I was about to leave, my friend and his mom wanted to take me out and go explore tokyo kinda. Eventually, we all wanted to take a picture together so being that at that time my Japanese was pretty bad and I didn't really have any confidence in speaking my friend made me go ask someone to take it for us. He said it was chill and that they would have my back if I messed it up too badly. So me being me, I tried to find just the right person to ask but there weren't many people where we were. So I just decided to take my chances and ask some security guard walking near by. So I went up to him and pretty much went like あの、すみません。写真取っていいですか?(Can I take a picture of you) The guy looked super confused and just said nah and I tried to look to my friend and his mom for help so that they could clear it up but they really just decided to look away and abandon me at that exact moment... At least now I'll never forget how to say it correctly lmaooooo

I made the fatal error of trying to preface a written message by apologizing for my "bad Japanese", which I translated as "悪い日本人". Needless to say, I didn't get a reply.

Should I be aiming to listening to stuff I understand less of? I have a handful of content I listen to regularly that I'm getting better and better at understanding, but every once in a while I'll switch to something I haven't been immersing with and notice I don't understand as much. Perhaps because I'm not accustomed to the characters and their speaking manarisms. Should I be constantly shocking my brain with new content as opposed to getting used to the same content more and more?

mine aren't juicy, they're just me misremembering my vocabulary all the damn time. last night for example I said:常識 instead of 正直 (じょうしき)jyoushiki- ”common sense”, rather than(しょうじき)shoujiki, "to be frank/straightforward/honest... ○○"
