I would say the opposite. Ive lived in SA all my life and i would definitely tell you to stay away. This place has deteriorated into a gangster state. Its guaranteed that you will have stuff stolen , possibly hijacked if you in a car. Yes , the Cape is beautiful ( its like another country compared to the rest of SA.). The problem also that you face is the coast from Durban to Cape Town. I have sailed it myself but with perfect weather window. This is the most treacherous piece of coast line sailing you will experience in the world. Not a good idea in the winter time. Enjoy your videos and have watched you since your monohull days.

So, my Sailing Zatara binge started a few weeks ago with a random 2 minute video that popped up in my facebook feed. It was about a guy that soloed a small sail boat from California to Hawaii. I jumped over to youtube to find the full video. After watching it, i started getting recommended videos about sailing. That led me to SV Delos. After marathoning many of Brian and Karin's videos, I then started getting Zatara recommendations. While I enjoyed SV Delos, and it got me thinking of buying a boat and sailing, it wasn't until watching Sailing Zatara that I really felt like it was something I could do. I brought up the idea to my wife, and to my surprise she really liked the idea. I have since continued to watch your videos, finally catching up today. I have enjoyed watching very much. I am a native Texan, retired from the military, and currently living in the midwest. I have 6 kids (ages 5-17) and while i enjoyed watching SV Delos, I wasn't sure about sailing with multiple children. Your videos have made me realize it's possible. I showed my wife one of your early videos where you talk about why you chose to move onto a boat and start sailing. She feels exactly the same as Renee described in that video. Watching you guys has been so much fun, not just because it's made me realize it's possible, but because you remind me so much of my childhood growing up in Texas. I moved away from Texas as a teenager, and I don't sound like a Texan anymore. Listening to you guys talk takes me back. We have had serious discussions about buying a suitable boat. Catamaran over a monohull is definitely the way to go. While there are SO MANY things that would have to happen prior to sailing away, at some point you just have to pull the trigger and do it. I hope to one day, see you guys out on the water.

It is a very strange feeling but you dont have to go that far to try it, rent a 20 foot boat, got a few miles out and try it. Dont do it if there is strong wind, it could blow your boat away faster then you can swim.

@@serenitysmith352 I'm a sailor, so can answer your question, Serenity. You DON"T know if there are sharks around. A depth sounder on the boat MIGHT beep if a big enough fish went directly under the beam of the sonar, but it will beep for even small fish. I've been swimming around the boat and would see a shark once in a while, but they're not like what they portray in the movies. They're more curious than anything else. However, I was once spearfishing and had a couple of fish on my 'tether' line around my waist... and after being speared, they do bleed into the water. A shark came to investigate and was roughly 15 feet below me. It wasn't going away, so I dropped one of the fish, then swam to the dinghy to get out of the water as quickly as possible. From that day on, I immediately put any fish that I speared into the dinghy to avoid that problem again.
