The problem with The Greatest Showman for me is how every song had the same sweeping grandness to it. It became really stale really quickly. You need to have an ebb and a flow to the music in a musical. If every song is sweeping and inspirational, it doesn’t work.

If you stick with just last 20 to 30 years, can also add controversial ones like Grease 2, Funny Lady, etc. But if you get into true classics, you start adding stellar ones like Victor/Victoria, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Gigi, Bye Bye Birdie, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, . . . shoot even Xanadu!

I actually didnt like it the first time and itll probably get worse on rewatch. This was actually My first introduction to this musical and I didnt understand why people liked it so much. The performances were good and all but I just could not tell what the theme was meant to be, the world looked so gray and sad and, probably the worst part, it felt like it was meant to end at the first happy ever after and the second act just felt like a weirdly long epilogue. Never thought about it again until I stumbled across the stage version's proshot on KZbin, thats when I fell in love with it.
@sabahk
@sabahk 3 жыл бұрын
Here’s the thing. I actually think la la land worked because it was so “movie-like” as you guys said. I find that when movie musicals try to capture theatre it just never works. It always ends up feeling cheesier than necessary and it doesn’t hit the way a live musical theatre performance does. So I think leaning into the more movie aspect actually works. I liked how it felt like the music fit the movie and not them trying to fit the movie into the music (if that makes sense). I don’t want to see it as a stage adaptation either but I think that’s a good thing. It means they chose the right medium. It’s always been so weird to me how I can love musical theatre so much yet have such a distaste for movie musicals. The only other one I genuinely loved was in the heights which did a good job of representing theatre in a movie form.

Not trying to start a fight here, but I think that the Greatest Showman is awesome, just not as a movie musical. I wouldn’t consider it as being part of that genre, it’s more of a movie… with music. As a movie, it’s incredible.
@sabahk
@sabahk 3 жыл бұрын
I’d have to disagree for the exact opposite reason. I think the movie on its own was pretty bad. The music was nice enough to listen to but as a movie it was already a mediocre concept with barely any interesting plot (also romanticizing a pretty shittt dude). The transitions into the music are what made it so laughably bad to me. I’m not trying to start a fight either tho so if you enjoyed it then that’s cool lol XD

Tgs is one of the most basic uninspired one ever. The fact that they romanticized a real life villain and depicted him to be a dreamer with savior issues is more than cringey. Yeah, I think the music is absolutely stunning and empowering an amazing. However, I think the movie on its own falls flat. I think a lot of story line is missing and if there was no music, I think there would’ve needed to be more death and backstory and explanations in my opinion. Again, I listen to the music nonstop tho lol.

I'm a massive musical theatre fan, and La La Land is a favourite movie musical of mine because I think that feeling of having a beautiful plot you can be emotionally invested in COUPLED with good music and visually appealing set and costume conveyed the right feel of theatre to an audience who would otherwise not see anything theatre-esque- another day of sun is perfect and also things like city of stars and the end scene when they're walking from set to set like they're onstage in the alternate reality.

I am so happy that Sam loves the POTO movie because most theatre people on the internet hate it and it is my favorite movie, granted I will admit that I have not seen the stage production of it and it is on my bucket list to see because I love POTO so much and having people not like the movie because the stage version is so good just makes me want to see it more. But POTO is the movie where if I were stranded on a deserted island and could bring only one movie with me it would be POTO. For all the reasons Sam said it being so visually beautiful and the music, the romance (although I'll completely admit to the grossness of the age gaps), action, thriller, and at times it is a comedy (past the point of no return when phantom switches places and the two guys look at each other like whatever not my problem also the idea of the other guy doing all that choreography with Christine always makes me chuckle) thank you for coming to my ted talk.

You should definitely see the stage production if you liked the movie (see a good production of it of course though). Or watch the 25th anniversary proshot -- it has some differences from the show but it's generally representative of the stage production. (I'm not going to be _that_ person and say one version is superior over another as everyone has different tastes but I would _very, very_ strongly recommend it over the movie version haha)

18:40 I get why you think this, but you have to remember,they had to sing these songs several times in a row. Anne Hathaway was singing for about 10 hours straight on one of the days!!! Also, there was this whole thing with Hugh Jackman not drinking water for several days before filming the first scene. If you want to find out more, watch sideways's video on the les mis movie, I found it really interesting.

You should do which is better the movie, or the musical that came from the movie, think mean girls, legally blonde, waitress, lion king, etc...

Yoooo I’m so glad we have virtually the same takes! I also was very put off by the dissonance between the setting of the Greatest Showman and the pop music of it. And Mamma Mia! Is one of my favorite movie musicals, it gives me hope that movie musicals have the potential to be good lol even though a lot of people crap on that movie, it’s so quotable and fun!

I love when Ryan is like “you know what the Masquerade number is supposed to be right?!” Same. Same. Same. Emmy Rossum also just wasntttttt Christine for me. Also. Not enough time in the opera house for me.

I tried to explain what y'all said about the greatest showman to my non musical theater friends, and they fought me so hard on it, like the music doesn't align with the plot like a musical soundtrack should. It was a movie soundtrack at most, but it just didn't make sense together.

My grandma went to London and saw phantom of the opera on Broadway. So phantom holds a very special place in my heart.

I have a complicated relationship with the greatest showman. I absolutely loved it when it first came out, then it became over saturated and I couldn’t stand it. some months went by I saw it again and it made me cry. I guess I think it’s pretty good, but as a musical theatre fan I also hated how it was used to be like the front face of musicals. also I can’t stand listening to this is me anymore.

Wow. Moulin Rouge in Defying Gravity? On my tier list, composed prior to the release of Cats, Moulin Rouge falls in Vocal Damage. And I would have to think seriously about elevating it to Flat when Cats came out . . . and I’m still not sure it would move up.

Yes, I like the Cats movie. Yes, I like BMC. Yes, I think Love Never Dies is better than Phantom. And yes, I like Heathers West End better (I loved Ryan's JD but, it's mainly bc of You're Welcome, chef's kiss, best song). We exist.

I personally think that West Side Story shouldn't have automatically been put in the middle just because of a casting choice. Also, what about The Sound of Music?
