west side story was incredible!! rachel, ariana, mike, and david gave performances of a lifetime and it was just beautifully shot, choreographed, edited, etc! i’ve watched all the the behind the scenes stuff i can find just to be amazed at the way steven spielberg’s mind works & the talent of the cast! i think the main reasons it flopped in the box office were that people who grew up with the 1961 movie weren’t gonna venture out to the theater in december to see what they assumed was gonna be a “bad remake” and ansel’s involvement kept a lot of the younger generation from supporting it because they didn’t want to support him. truly i think if tony was played by anyone else (besides james corden) the turnout would’ve been very different

Yeah I think the casting of Tony was the biggest thing that made it flop. But I mean-it’s still getting a TON of recognition with the different awards it’s already won and are nominated for so clearly it’s still doing well. And with it just being on Disney+ now, I think more people are getting to watch it now too. (Like me who has three boys, a husband, and the only musical movie nerd……so she had to wait……)
@Emily-wq4dn2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. It was my first movie viewing since before covid and I loved it. I hadn’t heard of the allegations against Ansel at that point, and with the viewing being a pretty last minute, spur of the moment decision I really hadn’t looked into the cast or really anything about the movie at all, outside of the few ads I’d seen. But I went to see it with my mother, who was born in the 60s and knew the old movie from then, and both of us really enjoyed it. There was very, very little that we thought could be improved, and it’s had a lasting impact on both of us for its commentary on race, culture, etc., and it’s interpretation of a story that goes back so many years, even before the 1961 movie or the musical before it.

I've always felt like in DEH, the reason why it worked was because you can always see why characters are doing what they're doing, even if you don't want them to do it (ie: Evan lying, Jared helping him, Connor pushing everyone away). I think putting that into movie form just didn't work at all.

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts records all Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, in addition to some regional theatre performances, but, unfortunately, the archive is open only to researchers. I could have sworn the average person used to be able to view shows one time only or a select number of shows only, but their site now says researchers only, so maybe I misheard or received bad information? It's at least good to know that important shows will not be lost to history, even if we can't partake of the collection ourselves at this point.

This is a REALLY long one, so strap in. If you don't want to read, you don't have to, but this is a rant I've been holding on to for a minute and I gotta let it go. What makes me upset about people criticizing Evan as a character and calling him a sociopath is how some of us (yes, I do it, too) disregard or blatantly ignore some of the events that lead up to Evan starting and following through with the lie. 1. Evan DID try to tell Cynthia and Larry that he wasn't friends with Connor, but as we know, our boy doesn't do well with confrontation and especially not in this situation, so to tell 2 grieving parents that are trying to hold on to the last little thing they can of their son that they in fact don't have anything to hold on to would be hard to do in the moment, especially if you're Evan Hansen. Also, the parents were being pretty stubborn about it and kept ignoring him each time he denied being friends with him, so there's that, as well. 2. After that scene, we get the scene with Jared and, well, lemme just quote the scene: Jared: What are you going to do? Evan: I mean, the truth. (Initially, he was going to tell the truth. Wanna know what Jared's response was?) J: The truth. Really? You're going to go to the Murphy's house and explain that the only thing left they have of their son is some weird sex letter that you wrote to yourself? (Pushing Evan toward the dark side just a little bit, but let's skip ahead about 3 or 4 lines.) E: What do you expect me to do? Just keep lying? J: I didn't say, "lie." All you have to do is just nod and confirm. Whatever they say about Connor, you just nod your head and you say, yeah, that's true. Don't contradict and don't make shit up. It's foolproof. (See? Jared is the one who initially pushes Evan to lie in the first place. But wait, there's more! Skip ahead 1 more line and...) E: They were so sad. His parents? His mom was just... I've never seen anyone so sad before. (Here's the most manipulative ass line Jared says probably throughout this entire script.) J: Well, then, good thing you're about to tell her the truth about your sex letter. I'm sure that will cheer her right up. (Literally the last thing Evan probably needed to hear, all things considered, Jare Bear, especially since you are his only "friend" and he gives into peer pressure REEEEAAAALLLL easily.) 3. Of course, a lot of the stuff that happens is Evan's fault, no doubt, but in the For Forever scene, Cynthia was the only one who was really trying to remember Connor as a good person. Hell, she was the only one really trying to remember Connor at all. Zoe and Larry started the argument, Zoe continued on, and Evan not only didn't like that they were fighting, he didn't like that they were saying that there were no good memories of Connor, so he stands up and tries to defuse the situation any way he can and that was For Forever. Not the best way to defuse the situation, but I can see why he did it. He wanted to give them some little nugget of hope that Connor wasn't as bad as they thought. Am I defending Evan? No, but I am explaining how not everything that happens is necessarily his fault. Also, I feel like the fact that he created something as beautiful as The Connor Project out of this is quite fantastic. He took a bad situation and flipped it into something positive (for a while, anyway). Now, again, not defending him. He should've defied what Jared said and, though it would break the hearts of Connor's parents, told them the truth, but I hope this puts into perspective a couple of the reasons he did what he did. Also, I don't personally think anyone is rooting for him except for at the beginning. I mean, really, he was written to be morally grey.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was the lead in a Lincoln Center Encores! production of Tick, Tick...Boom! in 2014 with Karen Olivo and Leslie Odom Jr.. IIRC, it was where he really got to know Leslie and lead to his being cast in Hamilton. It was that experience that more than likely led to him deciding to shepherd it to film, as it's a rather auto biographical re-telling of Jonathan Larsen's life, the man whose Rent is what made LMM feel like he could not just love the theater but be a part of it himself, thus changing the course of his life entirely.

The Prom may not be good, and the James Corden of it all doesn't help, but it's still a massively comforting movie for me. The music is really good all the way through, and Meryl Streep and Ariana DeBose especially really put their all into it.

Can you make a sequel (or prequel?) of this but with older movies? Like Chicago, Moulin Rogue, Romeo and Juliet, etc.

Here's my hot take: I feel like people who say Cats the movie is weird and uncomfortable and creepy need to revisit the original musical and realise that it was *always* weird and uncomfortable and creepy. That's what makes it great and what makes ALW such a genius.

It’s the cgi attempt- not as good looking as the stage makeup

If you want to see West Side Story, again, it’s on iTunes! I bought it earlier today, so I can watch it again! If this movie doesn’t get multiple Oscars, it will be a shame!

Not about the tier list, but the way he looks at her at 0:20 is just so genuine and sweet and I love it 😊

The crazy thing about the Dear Evan Hansen comments on Ben Platt "being too old" to play Evan Hansen is that literally the people who played Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever), Jared (Nik Dodani), Alana (Amandla Stenberg), and Connor (Colton Ryan) were all adults in their twenties at the time of filming too. The youngest was Amandla (now 24). Ben just hasn't aged as well as the rest of them (he's only like 3 months older than Nik Dodani). 😬

So Sondheim was a part of the movie Tick Tick Boom before he died! The voicemail left for Jonathan is actually him! But the physical Sondheim is played by Bradley Whitford

I haven't really found anyone really be able to explain why the DEH movie is bad because I think it fixes some things from the show, but also does some things worse than the show. Everyone talks about this and that but I agree it's not good but I can't really explain "why" outside of contrivance and some bad camera work

I do have to say, as much as he’s right that the movie wouldn’t exist without him, that’s an ugly thing to say to the world and came off more as if he was saying the audience are just a bunch of ungrateful brats and should all be grateful he wanted to do a movie

Rooting for evan hansen is exactly why i didn’t want to see the movie, because i don’t root for him in the musical and i knew they would make him the hero in the movie

I wanted to like in the heights, but I'm not a fan- I do love LMM and the movie is beautiful aesthetics wise. But WSS was just perfect to me😍

For almost all of these … I’d rather watch the live musical. I mean movies where they bursting to song and dance just takes me out of the story. It works on live show but not so much on movies. Yet, this what not so with Tick Tick Boom. I don’t know … it just works. And the movie was not a scene by scene reproduction of the live performance. It actually makes use of the medium of film to better tell the story in a way that a live show can’t. Maybe the choice of Andrew Garfield was inspired as the guy is a veteran who understands both mediums better than most. PS : throughly enjoyed the greatest showman because the soundtrack and choreography 😎 although I had to think harder to remember the plot 😅 - definitely the best soundtrack among them. The movie definitely will be better than any live shows.

Well I didn't know cats had a movie version, but when I heard I was like, why??? Probably the worst musical I've ever heard 😬 And yeah totally agree on most of these, except for west side story, for me it was the epitome of meh, like no reason to do a remake if you're going to leave the music as white as it was in the original... Loved Ariana Debose as Anita though, she's just phenomenal.

I think West Side Story flopped at the box office because they didn’t subtitle the spanish bits and people were complaining about it even though you can guess what the Spanish means from their facial expressions or they’ll say it again in english later on. Also spiderman came out around the same time and more people would rather see that than West Side Story. Encanto which is pretty popular also flopped slightly at the box office so I don’t think it has to do with how good the movie is
