Hey friends! We're getting down and dirty with the first major project on our new boat, replacing the water heater! I also find some interesting problems with our lithium battery monitor, and Katy shows off her muscles helping me haul the old tank to the garbage bin. Stick around for a raw and real look into what these projects take in the small spaces of a sailboat.

I suffer from OCD as well as agoraphobia and multiple anxiety issues. Your channel gives me an escape and helps me to escape my issues even if just for a half hour at a time. Katie, I don’t think most people understand how difficult it is for you to maintain your mental health in an ever changing and stressful environment. While yours is a sailing channel I would be curious to know more about your coping mechanisms. You two make a great team! Trying not to be too personal, I am interested in what kind of work “Katie’ does? You obviously work a lot, but your job obviously helps to keep some normalcy in your ever changing environment! Thank you so much for your channel and I appreciate the relief it gives me!

Absolutely exceptional "hot water" installation. Your the perfect couple for this new to you Passport 42, not only is she seaworthy, yet the North Sea stern makes her beautiful. So good to hear Kattie has passed her 2 Cornell University classes, we know her 4 more will be a joy ride. Best with this new purchase, she'll certainly be a joy to sail.

Thanks for explaining the zero calibration! My 712 is continually changing to lower battery percentage levels, even though the batteries are clearly full. Now I get it! By the way, we’re full time RVers. 2600kw solar, 6 100a Battle Born batteries, two mmpts, 2 multiplus 3000

I recently found your channel. I haven't yet started my live aboard sailing. I did almost 9000 NM of sailing last year and I inspected 2 boats this weekend. Hopefully, I will be sailing within the next year. I don't need coffee. But, I'd gladly trade for Katie. You both seem to be so great at your expertise and work to improve on the areas that are not your expertise. I'm a fan! Thanks for all the episodes that highlight the cruising life with a bit of reality.

Some 7 years ago hubby and I decided to buy a boat in our 40's, never having sailed. We watched a ton of youtube sailing videos/channels. Long story short, we decided to upgrade, bought a beautiful old boat with character during Covid w/ survey, sight unseen, in another country. Since then, we've had health stuff happen, a major move to the east coast for work- and hubby just drove to Rhode Island this week to see/assess/work on the new boat for the first time. Fortunately for us, the previous-previous owners were remarkable stewards and did all the heavy lifting. She's a 1979 41' Center Cockpit Ketch Transworld/Island Trader out of Taiwan, full of teak, carvings, and character. While we were not boating, and dealing with things, I stayed away from the sailing youtube videos, it was just... to frustrating to watch as our own plans were on hold. Now that we are so close to having her brought over I basically started looking into channels again this past week and tumbled into yours. You two 'kids' are inspiring, awesome, and doing a great job! I absolutely LOVE your boat- she has the same 'feel' in terms of character/personality/storage/etc of our boat so it makes it a lot more relatable to me- rather than watching people on catamarans (which I love, but not the same). Keep up the great work, looking forward to more of your great videos!

Wow thank you so much! We’re glad you found our channel and that you are closing in on your own boat adventure! We are also in the same “boat” when it comes to catamarans. It’s fun to watch some of the KZbin channels on cats, but not the same!

Great video However I believe you are wrong Your shunt is a low ohms resistor The voltage drop is directly proportional to the current flow through the shunt If your display show 3A draw assuming that the actual current is 0.3A then a loose connection on the shunt terminals or at the display would be the cause . The display is actually measure volts (mV to be more accurate ) . So you can not calibrate the sensing of current . Alternative the shunt parameters are incorrect set to the display Although I believe that all victron shunts have the same characteristics

Congrats on your new boat. What a task just cleaning. Watched all your videos with this new purchase. I noticed you have full stainless rails all the way around the boat. Why wouldn’t you want to put some fresh paint in the area of the water heater as you replaced it?

Well minus 12 amps is not sustainable situation, you did not say, what plus you got turning the solar back on on cloudy day. I have banter monitor, basically the same, and am still trying to interpret it, after 3 months. It is supposed to recalibrate at every full charge.

I would not leave the water pressure breaker on. If you happen to have a leak in the system then you will empty the fresh water tanks. Bilge pump will dump it to the ocean, leaving you with no fresh water. I know this is a hassle but in the middle of the ocean without fresh water is no fun either.

How could Katie not find calibrating the ammeter interesting? Go Parker and thanks for saying aluminium, I think I’d be inclined to protect the hull against the corner of that heat unit with something just in case it comes adrift in bad weather. Thanks for sharing another great episode.
