Our new chickens have arrived! We've had an eventful week. New additions on the farm and the young chicks had a chance to meet the older hens! Who scared who?!

@@TheOldSwedesFarm we are getting 5 Buff Brahma and 5 Prairie Bluebell Egger. They checked all our boxes for climate and laying from the options available.

I got 10 girls last year and decided to get a rooster this spring for added protection as we have a lot of predators in the woods surrounding us. He was about 6 months old when he arrived and came with a companion to help him transition easier since he had to be quarantined at first. That gave us 12 total and the husband said I couldn't buy anymore chicks. Now it's 2 months later and I have a broody hen who I allowed to have 4 eggs (shh, don't tell the husband). Hoping for babies in 16 days! 🐣🐣🐣🐣

I went to ours recently wanting to just get a couple chicks for my broody hen to raise. They only had 5 chicks. They require you to buy 4. I told them that I only needed 2 and said if I buy 4 then one will be all alone. They told me that they would throw that one in for free. So chicken math. Wanted 2 - came home with 5!

My chics came a month ago. Of course, it was warmer here in Kentucky than where you're at. They're adolescent size now and in with my older chickens. I was concerned about the rooster bullying them, but he has become very protective. The older hens are the bullies.

We doubled our flock by getting 5 barred rocks and 5 re d sex links. We already have two roosters and I didn’t want to deal with getting another one instead of a hen, so went with two that are sexed right out of the egg. Also, I remembered your recommendations on these two, so went ahead and took the plunge! But I think the red sex link is a little different in that ours are getting black tail feathers instead of white like yours. They’re supposed to be good layers as well. Thanks! 😊🐓

To be honest, ours lay all year around. The ISA Browns lay 6-7 times a week. They are machines!

We haven't lost any hens. We're going to use these to replace our older hens. We're just working in the garden and with the chickens to provide for our needs (and a small amount to share). Trying to keep it manageable this year. Cheers Tani!

Congrats on the new chicks! Enjoy. Only meat bird chicks this year for us. I agree too dusty in the house and we won’t be doing that again. Will these be replacing the current flock?

I think we may sell the eight we have in the fall. We'll see. Worst case scenario, we keep them all and have 28 through the winter. We're right back into selling eggs...... Cheers Lisa!
