Thinking of chickens? I hope this will help you see the good, and the bad, of having hens. Let us know if you've got further questions.

I just experienced a con after a year and a half of having chickens. One of my original girls Sweetie... The ISA Brown... Passed away due to a reproductive disorder. I'm coming to find out that this is common in hybrid breeds made for high egg production. Even with all the research I did before I got the chickens, no one told me how fragile they are. Even how quickly a virus can come through and wipe out half a flock. For me, her loss was devastating because I am one of those ridiculous people who treats the chickens like pets and snuggles and cuddles them. Lol. I don't even know that I'm capable of being detached. That being said, even with how devastated I am, I wouldn't give my girls up for the world and I will continue to keep chickens for as long as I'm physically able. It's so worth it. So rewarding in so many different ways.

We have been lucky and have never had a hen with a reproductive issue or had a disease take out part of the flock. So sorry that you lost Sweetie. We've had a few favorites and it's tough when they go. Glad you'll be sticking with your flock. We wouldn't change a thing. They aren't pets but we love them. Have a great week! Cheers!

One of ours (Golden Comet) got egg bound. Only from the bad experience of others did I learn how dangerous it could be & we were able to give her Epsom salt soaks, etc to get her going again. Sorry for the loss of your feathered friend. All we can do is learn from these things and try to catch them if & when they happen.

@@vinlago There wasn't much we could do with the loss. Our favorite, Lena, was a beautiful, big Buff Orpington. We were on vacation and our neighbor was watching the hens. Lena loved to free range and disappeared without a trace. We figured it was a large hawk or eagle. Nothing we could've done. She was special. Have a great day!!

Chickens are easy and fun! Endless hours of entertainment! Thats a pro. Con - dealing with unexpected loss. That’s the worst. Not knowing why or how a hen died stinks!

I absolutely agree with your method,,,, spend the money,,, it’s not just the eggs,,, but it’s the hens wellbeing. Your hens always look fantastic,,healthy and happy, that’s an enormous plus to you for your personal investment. Keep up the good work. And don’t forget,,,, a garden without chickens,,is like a film without actors. ✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌❤🏆🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

Totally agree. The money is well spent to keep them happy and healthy! I hate seeing where people have lost an entire flock (or a good chunk of their flock) due to their poor planning. Thanks for stopping by to watch John! We appreciate your support!

I’m very jealous of your coop only costing $1200. I’m not a carpenter so I asked for a quote from a company for a walk in 6x8 coop with a 8x12 covered run…. $5,000!😮 thanks for all the great info!

Some more flighty birds will fly over fences too if they know there are goodies on the other side. We have a garden they can easily access and we also open range them so they don't venture into the fenced garden often. If doing any construction birds will peck at foam insulation, plastic, everything.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 5 ай бұрын
You are correct. We've had two birds who figured out how to fly over the fence. Most won't go up there since it doesn't have a "top" on the fence. Nothing hard for them to land on. You are really correct on the construction. They always want to help!! Thanks for adding your comments! Cheers!

Pro: excess eggs are easily preserved with a freeze dryer. Freeze dried eggs properly packaged can last decades while retaining 94% of their nutrition.

I moved asparagus along with quack grass from my brother's farm after he passed away. That's one thing we can't eat enough to keep up with. I enjoy watching now, and remember 100 Leghorn laying hens, and 100 more straight run broilers. It was fun. Thank you again.

On that thought I was permitted to raise Emden geese while I was in Junior High. They wiped out a burdock patch. After 2 years the burdock was gone. A little bit of grain, and Pietrus in Sleepy Eye would pay good money for them. Space is important to horses, rats, and people too.
@TheOldSwedesFarm

I'd love geese if they could cure the burdock. I've been knocking it down for four years and feel like I've got it all cut and burned. Trying to keep any plants from going to seed each year. I feel like I'm winning the battle. I guess I just needed geese!! Cheers Bryce!

Thank you for sharing sir. Which one or kind of your chicken produce the moat eggs? iSA brown or rhode island?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 ай бұрын
The ISA Brown are egg laying machines. They lay almost seven days a week, even in winter. I can tell which eggs are from our Browns and I bet they lay 26 or 27 eggs per month. Great hens! They lay more than the Reds and don't have the attitude that the Reds have. We're going to get 15 more of the ISA Browns this week. Hope this helps.
