@dragonwithamonocle3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's definitely a difference in the way mammals, especially humans, handle pain vs reptiles and say, bony fish/sharks. I'm sure they're all just as AWARE of injuries, but humans have a much more adverse reaction to large injuries. In a swordfight, if you get stabbed, shot with arrows, sliced to ribbons in other ways, you might not necessarily take damage that in and of itself would be fatal. But, the pain of it can be incapacitating once you feel it through the adrenaline, and the stress of that panic on your heart, as well as the mental comprehension of "those are my insides sticking out" egging that panic on... yeah, that's gonna kill you from stress. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure that while reptiles have a strong sense of self-preservation, as most animals do, I don't think that pain affects them in the same way on a psychological level. Certainly they feel that something has gone wrong, and must be aware of the injury in some way, but I don't think it hurts as much. I don't mean that they don't feel as much pain, or that things are less painful to them, but I don't think it hurts as much. What I mean by that is, there's a difference between stubbing your toe and going "okay, I just stubbed my toe. Ow." and stubbing your toe the exact same way and going "aaaahhhhhh!" and hopping around on one foot clutching your mildly contused digit.
@qa3773 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the difference in how they react to injury has to do with differences in the circulatory system, and the fact that many reptiles can autautomize(sp) parts of themselves. Also perhaps because most reptiles are also a prey species, and prey species tend to hide injury/pain very well to avoid being singled out/hunted. Birds, mice, etc are like this also.
@danielday83743 жыл бұрын
Wait I thought sharks didn’t have bones
@al777093 жыл бұрын
Good point, maybe it's because we evolved to show pain? We benefit from pain displays because we're social animals, we can solicit help when we are injured. But even if a snake is in pain, there is no need for it to make a display of it, because there are no other snakes around to help it. Conversely, we're also very good at detecting pain in other people (because it helps with the fitness of our tribe) but not necessarily animals. So there might be some anthropic bias in there. Maybe rabbits also think other rabbits show it loud and clear when they're in pain, but humans ignore their pain for some reason.

I've watched others freak out over stubbed toes and hop around, tear up and make a big to-do over it, while I've cracked my pinky toes multiple times, winced and sometimes swore a blue streak, but otherwise just got on with it. Many mammals have social networks--a cry of pain will bring the herd/troupe/pack down on whatever is harming that individual. I'm the "reptile". I'm outside the social network. Stub my toe all the live long day, no one would come. LOL I'm kidding--I'm just weird in that I don't freak like other folks do when I stub my toe. Dunno why. ;-p Reptiles don't tend to live in social groups and don't help each other out. The only species-type that I know of that might respond to a cry for help would be the crocodilians and the peeping of their adorable babies. Seriously, have you **seen** them? So fuggin' CUTE. The mothers protect their young for well over a year. Until you get into the monitors, boas and large venomous snakes, most reptiles tend to be smaller prey animals. They **have** to hide their pain and gtfo of an area fast, or hide really well if they're hurt, so they just deal with their pain in ways we aren't generally likely to because it makes them vulnerable to predators, otherwise. That, and they're just damned **tough** little guys. :-) There's probably some vascular changes involved, too, but I don't know enough about the anatomy to be able to say just what it is their bodies do that keeps them from going into shock when they sustain a serious injury. Like I said, they hella tough.

The only way to prove "him" out is to put him alone with known females and go through a few breeding cycles (because snakes can and often do hold sperm from previous encounters). Or they need a young female that has never been with a male, paired off with just "him" and see if she ends up having babies, but even adult fertile females reject males, so that could take awhile too.
