Get yourself a power generator you can get ones that charge off the house mains or solar panels and get yourself some extra lamps
@BogusDudeGW5 ай бұрын
I've got a Jackery 1000W, cost me about £650, it'll just about manage to keep my small chest freezer running overnight. Solar isn't gonna help in a storm so you need to charge in advance. I also have a 5600W petrol generator that cost me about £200 and 2x20L military style jerry cans that'll keep most of the house going for a lot longer, while recharging my Jackery at the same time. I would run the generator during the day and then switch over to the battery when i go to bed to keep the essentials ticking over. They were lucky, some storms can knock you out for days/weeks.

One morning in 1987 I woke up to find a power cut underway. I opened my bedroom curtains and found that the tree which stood in my front garden had vanished leaving only a rather unsightly hole in the ground. A little later I went outside and discovered the tree upside down through the roof of my garage and resting on my car. My wife, my two children and me had slept through what became known as the Great Storm of October 1987 and neither of us had heard a thing!

@@nikandjb1 I lived in a village near Bury St Edmunds and because there was no power, I went into Bury to buy a camping stove and candles. There were trees and a couple of HGV's that I had to detour round and the centre of Bury St Edmunds itself looked like bombs had hit it.

The main thing is everyone is ok and only a small amount of damage to the house, you will have to get something built in front of that bit as a windbreak. You will also have to get some lamps and a camping stove as a just in case for future events.

One of the best things we ever bought was some solar powered/battery lights. They are very cheap, east to fix and last a good 8 to 10 hours. We actually use them now instead of our normal lights and we reduced our bill by about 35%.

So glad and thankful you're all safe and sound!! And that Bo bo was brought in from the storm. Wild little munchkin wanting to go back out in it 😂 I follow a farm in oklahoma that was missed by 0.5miles from the anticyclone but it hit their family's homes, all alive but multiple fatalities of people that weren't family or friends of theirs so still really sad. I think in the perspective of moments like those, lack of power is the least of your worries and maybe think about building a storm shelter? When I went to Belize the locals said their hurricaine seasons are getting worse and lasting longer 🙈 my heart goes out to those who have lost their homes, loved ones or lives 😢❤

JT ,I was thinking about that facia at bottom of home that came off in storm. Am I right in thinking ,it fixes to base of home and some timber along floor ? If so it'll always be weak.. Maybe afix a trellis frame up in its place , then afix facia's to trellis and home , with ground stakes to support lower of trellis . Obviously use treated wood . To give it a skeleton frame work ,to bolster its strength. Just a thought mind .

At least you are all safe. Getting yourself a couple of oil lamps might be a good idea. I have one in the outside shed just in case it is needed. I need to get some lamp oil as well. In the 70s and 80s we would get regular power cuts which could last for a week. But I grew up in a remote farming area in the UK. So we had some oil lamps and candles and knew how to cope with it. Take care and best wishes

If thats the predominant wind direction like in the UK its mainly west/ southwestern winds might be worth building something some brick walls or something like that to take the wind, as that will be likely to be taken out again. Also if you live in an area that has power outages might be worth getting a diesel or solar powered generator, shouldnt cost any more than a few hundred dollars for a second hand one.

preventing against damage is why most british homes are made of brick or stone, much harder to damage in storms

I get that the power going out during the scary part of a film is bad timing but I have a possibly scarier example. I was not feeling great so was lying down watching a film. It was a horror movie and when the scary music built up the tension, I had a muscle spasm in my hand and grabbed my own leg! I absolutely scared the **** out of myself (that was one of the first times I had muscle spasms/twitches as a result of a migraine)
