You should have taken photos before moving in so that when you move out - proof of anything that might have been wrong prior to occupying. Some rental agencies/landlords are known to muck around with "bonds" so that you don't get it back. Keep really good records!

Always do this! It has saved me more than a couple of times. Also make sure you fill out your condition report and return it before the cut off date.

Definitely agree with this. We had a very similar experience but were saved a lot of money because the agent move on to a new job so no one followed up. Even if you think it's not important, take a photo!

Sound advice. You do need some flexibility when moving to am unfamiliar place. Initially renting gives you some breathing space to discover the ins and outs of the area before the big commitment of buying.

I love you guys! My parents and I emigrated from England in 1981. I was 9 years old. We stayed with family in Perth that were already here until my parents bought a house nearby. I have always loved it here, I went back to Lancaster to visit my Nanna when I was 14, but was so homesick for Australia/ my friends, lol) that I cut my visit to 2 weeks instead of the intended 3 months. I have since moved to Sydney 20 years ago, but would never visit the UK again.

Firstly, welcome to Oz. You do your homework well in your research, must be the “chalkie” (oz slang for teacher) in you. It’s obvious in your videos that you don’t regret what you and your family have done in uprooting yourselves and moving to the other side of the world...it’s brave and it’s lovely to see. Good choice in choosing AppliancesOnline for your appliances, I’ve used them many times, still do. Best wishes in finding a teaching position. You have a lovely family, stay safe and take care.

That is amazing. The houses there are very similar to what we have here in Florida. The tile floors and open floor plans, the long blinds like that. The only difference is, most of the houses here in florida are only one floor, you know, hurricanes and all. Seems very similar though. The differences between Aussie and the UK remind me of the differences of Florida and the northern part of the united states where I am originally from. The houses up there are older, and smaller, no open plans, and basements... where florida is tile, way open floor plans, and bigger spaces/houses. There is also a lot more land down here. I found it extremely interesting that Australia is typically weekly rentals, where as the U.S. we rent by the month and require a first month, last month, and a security deposit (which i learned from your video they call a "bond") the security deposit is typically equal to one month's rent, so here in the US it is WICKED expensive to move into a rental.... say your rent is $1,000, you would need first, last, and security, so $3,000 to be able to move in... it is definitely a struggle. With all that being said though, I am so happy to see you all moved into a place and getting settled on your new life down under, best of luck and as always much love to you and your family!
@ThatJohnstonLife
@ThatJohnstonLife 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, thats really expensive to rent in the US. I thought it was bad enough renting here. Either way, I think you definitely get more for your money than the UK. I think all homes should be open plan, it feels so claustrophobic to be in just one small room.

I'm assuming the Rheem unit on the side of the house is your hot water system. Most aussie homes don't have an internal boiler that I have seen (mainly WA) also bottle gas, how crazy, Brisbane does weird things. In Perth bottle gas is normally only places they cant lay gas lines like in the hills (actually maybe that's why Brisbane has so much bottle gas..). Renting was a way smarter idea for you really. Can you imagine buying, then 6 months later landing a job at a dream school, that's more than an hour commute away?

In Melbourne gas is mains same as water and electricity and you probably have access to cable and NBN (internet) as well. Remember that the sun passes to the north so windows on the north side will get the most sun and you might want to look at shades etc on those windows. And with the little one... 1 - make sure you cover her with sunscreen and a Tshirt and Hat whever she goes outside - sunstroke and extreme sunburn are easy to get and harsh on young skin 2 - Get her swimming lessons ASAP. Living here she will be in and around water a lot! Our kids start swimming lessons at school in their first year and most kids learn or at least get water safe around the age of 3

Better check out the rental market online, there is next to nothing to rent all over Australia. Landlords are taking the opportunity to sell at high prices and the new owners are moving in themselves. This is leaving massive rental shortages.

@@fearnobeer9077 They might be better looking at a heat pump. Our solar hot water was smashed by a hail storm along with our solar panels. Apparently, heat pumps are very cheap to run and you don't run the risk of losing your hot water if the solar hot water system is damaged in a storm.

I live in Dubbo (moved from Sydney almost a year ago). I live in a relatively new estate where most of the houses are now 6-7 years old. Because of the history of the estate, most houses in the area has gas bottles for hot water and cooking. However, over time natural gas has become available in the street for connection to the house. I have since been connected to the gas so I don’t need to worry about getting new gas bottles or worrying about having to restart the pilot light for the hot water tank. In fact, with my connection to the natural gas, I changed to an instantaneous gas hot water system, so I have done away with the hot water tank.

@@ashleyblack5198 I used to live in Strathpine in one of the townhouse villages. There's a large shopping mall, from memory I think it was a Westfield, train station and it was a great place to live. Not too far away from the city (I think it was 30 mins on the train - it was a while ago though so I could be a little wrong on that). Only thing I hated about living there was all the cane toads that congregated in groups at night around there.
