you could put the coolant cap back on after removing the cover, stop you accidentally pouring oil or getting debris falling in it.

Love the video. Liked, sub’s and looking forward to more videos. As a new 992 owner, I’m learning how to work on my 992 car and plan to keep coming back. I’ve been working on my other cars for the last 40 years but I’m not a mechanic, it’s just something I like to do but like most people love to learn more from others.

Excellent video. An idea...how about removing the cover and reinstalling the coolant cap with the engine cold? That way there's no need to deal with hot coolant as well as no worry re getting oil in the coolant. Of course that means you would also have to wait for the engine to cool before replacing the cover.
@Rennwerks
@Rennwerks 2 жыл бұрын
The reason we change the oil when warmed up is to ensure proper drainage of the old oil. Cold oil is viscous and sticks to surfaces not allowing for as much drainage. Most of the time when a vehicle comes to the shop for an oil change the customer has fully warmed up the vehicle and they expect an us to change the oil while they wait.

Excellent presentation, and obviously a good idea to change the oil early on no matter what the dealership tells you. The drain plug tool...can you repeat who makes this or where you can buy one? I've got a new 992 coming in the next couple of months and will be doing the initial break-in oil change myself. I don't have a lift so will be using good jack stands. You showed where the 4 jack points are below, but how do you use a floor jack and get the jack stand in position? Seems like the floor jack would be in the way of the jack stand you are trying to place underneath the car.
@Rennwerks
@Rennwerks 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug! We personally believe that ramps are the safest way to perform at home oil changes. If you were doing wheel related stuff, the chassis is stiff enough to lift at the front jack point and raise the whole side of the vehicle so that you can get jack stands under the rear lift points. The tool is made by AST and works for all VW/Audi/Porsche plastic oil pan drain plugs. Remember to always replace the plug itself. Thanks for watching our video! Make sure to subscribe, we have some new content for the 992 coming soon, Akropovic exhaust, wheel spacers, IPD Plenum and APR tune.

I get an extra .5 qts out of my engine when jacked up from by the rear only with the front pointing down vs draining when jacked up level. I fill mine with 9qts and its in the middle of the range.
@Rennwerks
@Rennwerks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you tilt the car forward you may get a little extra and then bring the car back to level to get the little more extra that pools up in certain places of the motor from the forward tilt. On older Porsches we also like drain the Oil coolers and turbos (if equipped) to get a complete drain. On the 992, attempting to drain the oil coolers would have been an exercise in futility as they are not easily accessed. For purposes of the video, it would be overkill. Plus, we are changing the oil more frequently than Porsche Dealer wants. We prefer 5000 mile oil changes after the first initial break-in oil change that we performed in this video.

I don't think orientation matters in this type of filters. When I removed the filter on my brand new 992, the writings were on top. so it was installed that way at the factory, and I don't think they care which direction it goes.

Some helpful info here, especially respecting the differences between the 991.2 and the 992. Getting to the filter canister is easier now. I also understand you don't have to remove the bumper cover to get to the air filters. Access is through the fender liner. The drain plug is the same item as the current VW Tiguan. The tool is also the VW 10549. You can get a Snap On bit to fit these plugs for $10. Changing the oil at 2,000 miles seems OCD to me. We did 2,000 miles in the first week in our car.

It would have passed through the engine to get to the filter. Some of the metal may be from bearings, or other areas.
@blackericdenice
@blackericdenice 11 ай бұрын
@@Rennwerks Not true. Metal fall off parts and is wash down to the pan. Some of it would to be sucked up by the pump and sent to the filter. The rest would stay on the floor of the pan. Metal is not going pass the filter. This is why when people cut open a filter. Metal is there. I went to automotive school to rebuild engines.

The extension on the torque wrench causes a false torque spec result
@Rennwerks
@Rennwerks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you want to get technical, there is a certain amount of twist action in the metal shaft of the extension and universal joint which will result in a lower torque value than actual. There are lots of places on all cars where one cannot torque a fastener without an extension and other aids. In this case, the oil filter cap is plastic and torque value is to low to matter, therefore the final difference in torque value would be to infintesimal to matter especially when the variation range is +/- 2.
@davidjacobs8558
@davidjacobs8558 2 жыл бұрын
for oil filter cap, the sealing is done by o-ring, and not by tightness of filter cap. torque just need to be enough for the cap to not loosen itself from engine vibration.

Porsche never skips a beat or misses an opportunity to steal your money so if they're not recommending an oil change before 10k miles, there is probably some merit behind it. This isn't 1974 when engines flaked apart and you had to change the oil every 3k miles.
