The reason lando had his lap reinstated was it isn’t a hard and fast rule that your next lap is deleted, it is down to the stewards notes. On some tracks it is in the stewards notes if you go off the track that lap and the next is deleted, it wasn’t in the stewards notes in china.

The grass catching fire due to sparks, makes perfect sense actually! There has been a curious phenomenon going on in China in recent years. Instead of using precious water to keep the grass in public places alive, they've taken up the strategy of *painting* the dead grass green!! (Trees and bushes too!) So if that's what they've done here, dead grass + paint + sparks = a pretty flammable combination!! 🔥👀

Exactly. That was my immediate thought. I’ve seen too many videos of people in China spraying grass green when it’s basically dead. And then there’s the fake fields of poppies with ping pong balls on the end of rebar wedged into the floor!

What's nice about the new format (if we must have sprints at all) is that the sprint and the race are at different times of the day, so it is not going to be an a complete reveal of how the race will be (hopfully). Add to that mixed conditions, maybe finaly get a banger 🤞

Regarding the fire phenomenon, I think it has something to do with the track that was painted and the workers may have spilled turpentine in certain places. Turpentine is oily and that is why the fire spread so fast,

on the fires in the grass : If you want to "paint" asphalt, especially in a cheap TOFU-dreg kinda way, you just spray gasoline over it. it will turn the asphalt deep black at once. Im pretty sure that's how they quickly bodged the track-improvements in a typical china-china way.

I feel like when the rain started to come down we really saw the veteran drivers step up. it’s going to be very interesting to see the first few laps of the sprint because we have quite a few very talented drivers up at the front we’re also really gonna see how bad Mercedes really is because Louis now doesn’t have to battle through a field. He’s now starting up towards the front and I think we’re also gonna get a good look at the Aston Martin starting up towards the front with Fernando.

Mclaren didn't ask for the lap to be reinstated. It was the FIA that realised that he had actually gone slower on the 2nd lap and had lost 0.3 seconds from going off in turn 16.

On the reason of fire, it’s because of catkins of Willow trees (got a lot of them in Shanghai this season), they are like cotton and highly flammable, got ignited by floor sparks. Should be fine tomorrow with the rain

I remember grass fires coming up here n there back in the day watching the V8 Supercars. Their exhaust outlet was on the side of the car. So when they’d come up to the edge of the track, the spits of flames that would come out, hit the grass and ignited it. It being Australia, the grass wasn’t hard to set a light 😂
