The prominent female backing vocals are provided by another Swedish musician, Fia Kempe. The only time Ghost has ever performed this song live, Fia was on stage with them, along with a choir. Fia is the lead singer of the band The Great Discord, also from Linkoping and good friends with Tobias. Imperiet (as noted) was the original artist, and I believe this song is very well known in Sweden. It’s a beautiful cover, and very faithful to the original.

Afterwards I looked it up on KZbin and found Imperiet's version. Very similar feeling, but I like how Ghost modernized it!

I belive its a secondary meaning for nuclear war. Man leanred how to make fire, and the kindles walls were extended; then,A Rain fell over the land, but no walls could stop such a rain. I think the whole thing is man rising and inevitably falling, using Babylon as a reference of humanity in it's current state. It's a very thought provoking song in so many ways and I love it

It is actually absolutely about nuclear war by a band called Imperiet from the 80s.

Additionally, both bands are Swedish, hence ghost would nod to a band that came first.

I’m not a Christian by any means, but this song always makes me tear up. I think it’s one of Tobias’s best vocal performances to date. I interpret the song as a warning about mankind’s destruction by our own hands via nuclear war. We made fire, we built cities, cities turned to empires and became industrialized, and in the reach for something bigger, it’s all destroyed in a rain of nuclear fallout. I find it interesting that this song lines up with the themes of Impera pretty well, and keeps with the idea that time is cyclical and not linear. I felt like the reference to the 7th day is as a reset button on creation, not necessarily an ultimate end.

Yeah it uses Biblical references but it's not a religious song. It's a parable about how humanity ruined the earth with industry and war. Thåström has apparently found god in later years but when he wrote this he was very much not religious. This is a great cover but the original by Imperiet is something special. I recommend this live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXzLXoGVrtJ7gtEsi=Vtg7rDg8gQkQ5cjA

The scripture verse at the end of the song is my favorite. It presents the notion that a being who makes no “mistakes” actually regrets his actions which actually imply that it does actually make mistakes. Which then brings up a whole deeper question

The chorus says “now who will pray, for Babylon.” And then the last line in the chorus says “on your knees for Babylon is faaalllllinggggg!” Also, a very simple way to put Ghosts whole shtick is that Christianity has a Papa in the form of Jesus Christ. Someone who spreads the word of God. So Tobias went, “why doesn’t the other side have a Papa?” And that’s what Papa Emeritus is- is the Papa of all evil. However, yes they are against corrupt churches who try to hide their past and how the religion has evolved over the years. For example The Catholic Church is so nice now and “not corrupt” (I’m sure it still is) compared to their evil past of torture and all that. Tobias calls that out and how almost all religions are contradictory.

I've alway interpretated the lyrics of this song to be a metafore for mankinds relation to nature, with the technical development vs enviormental issues, global warming and that kind of stuff. Like when you reach the tipping point your skyscrapers and technology won't help you. Nature will have its way.

He's mentioned in interviews that belief in the devil is belief in God by default. It's an acknowledgement that there's as great a good as there is evil and you can actually take comfort in that knowledge. It suggests that if there's truth to the devil t's also proof of heaven and an eventual reckoning. It's like a Trojan message that reaches people who wouldn't otherwise listen and gives the listener an opportunity to explore whichever direction they desire.

Great reaction, interesting thoughts and I think Ghost did put a biblical/satanic interpretation about this song. I am not sure that was the original meaning. Imperiet was a rock/punkrock band from sweden with a lot of lyrics about politics. They had a left kind of view and I suspect the lyric is about todays world and capitalism, imperialism (funny when you think about the name of the band but the name is from star wars actually). So the biblical story I think is allegations what is happening to our world. This is my thoughts only, have no interview but Thåström (the guy who wrote The song).

This is good but you should listen to the epic band Imperiets original version in Swedish called Bibel. We Swedes grew up with it during the 80s , Imperiet were huge in Sweden and the lyrics aren't about God and his creation, it's about the horrors of nuclear war and is very political like all their songs. They also made a English version but I prefer the Swedish one. "God's voice" was added to Ghosts version.

While the original song may or may not have had a meaning similar to what you were thinking with "pray for Babylon", when Ghost picked it, they probably meant it more as, try to tell the people causing so much pain and destruction in the world on both a human and environmental level (some under the guise of Christianity) that what they're doing is wrong and try to get them to change their ways before it's to late. In the modern secular day, our Babylon (the world) is falling (being destroyed via war and climate change, mostly to line the pockets of a few powerful people with no care for who or what they hurt in the process because they are without moral. You don't have to be Christian to have morals, you just have to be a good person, and any good person alive today can see that this world is headed for bad things. It's the fall of Rome on a global scale unfolding right before our very eyes.

There are two different orders of creation in Genesis (long explanation as to why), and the Adam and Eve order doesn't gibe with either (two different stories of Eden)... Wow, that's not what got me a theology degree.
