According to Mike Portnoy, this was their Magnum Opus and was the culmination of everything Dream Theater had been working towards. The experience of hearing the entire album is like reading a murder mystery. Probably one of the best concept albums ever recorded.

One of my favorite songs from the greatest concept album of all time!! At some point, you really need to sit down and listen to the entire "Scenes From A Memory" album from beginning to end...perhaps "Scenes From New York", the live performance of the album, which includes a video presentation to help you understand the story. LIFE CHANGING!!

Finally Free is the epitome of the ultimate catharsis. It's the grand finale of grand finales. Well several of DT's songs are like that such as the grand finale of the AA saga which is The Shattered Fortress. Just beyond epic!!🤯🤯

You can literally listen to album after album of DT and not only never get bored, but find limitless nuance, surprises, and unexpected twists. There is so much good music out there, but it's hard to argue this isn't the best of it. I listen to virtually every style and this is the only band I never tire of listening to. You could (and should) do nothing but DT reactions for a while and not only not grow tired of them but likely only desire listening to more. They're intoxicating

@@DrawTaken Not really. DT's sound is somewhat defined by LeBrie's voice, but Serj n SOAD... he's a HUGE part of their sound. Also SOAD is nowhere nearly as instrumental. In the context of the album, "Home" is where things go off the rails. Nicholas thinks he has solved Victoria's murder, he thinks Julian did it and it's an open and shut case. Home is where we discover that things are not as simple as they initially appeared. It's sort of the darker turn for the rest of the album. As Lex noticed, this is also filled with lyrical and musical references to the original "Metropolis." It's the first time in the album explicitly connected to the original song and is the foreshadowing for the cyclical nature of the narrative.
@lLpars

There are references to Metropolis Pt. 1 in Overture 1928, Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy and Beyond This Live, but they're very minor and much less obvious compared to Home (and everything after).

Shame on you, Nick -- Alexia says she loves concept albums, and that you were "guiding" her on her journey into Dream Theater. So you go and introduce her to just a fragment from the middle of Metropolis Part II, their pièce de résistance? You guys need to listen to it from start to finish, it's the only way! And just like Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned from Tool, this is one album that needs to be listened to with the lyrics handy so you don't miss the juicy story being told. BTW - Us DT fans don't get mad when someone compares DT to Creed or other bands... we just shake our heads and think, "Wait till they listen to The Glass Prison, A Change of Seasons, Octavarium or The Count of Tuscany", and then we'll talk."

I wouldn't listen to Dream Theater for years because of LaBrie. Now Dream Theater is one of my favourite bands and I couldn't picture them without him. His vocal performances on Images And Words and Awake are absolutely fantastic. I think the biggest reason why people don't like LaBrie isn't anything to do with his talents as a vocalist. It's how he sounds. He has a very high registry for a male vocalist and people are turned off by hearing a dude sound like that lol.

That's what Dream Theater is, a collection of All Progressive sounds to create the ultimate sound, and that is Dream Theater. Great Job ... Don't forget to wear a black T-shirt when playing Dream Theater...lol. We got a Trifecta! of Dream Theater. The only Band, that other bands, have to compare to. Glass Prison, if you want to snap ur neck. Nick, you might be used to listening to the Live version of Home and that's why it sounded remixed or muffled. They just turned the pots down on the Keys. And Lex, that was Not a Grand Piano, it was Jordans Kord Keyboard. I was amazed too how much it sounded like a real Grand. You guys have fun.

Have to add one more comment... if you guys ever do a reaction to the entire Metropolis 2: Scenes From a Memory album, pay attention to the story being told. It’s a good concept story but the thing that’s always intrigued me is that a lot of Dream Theater songs from different albums all the way up through the Black Clouds and Silver Linings era seem to lyrically play into the Scenes From a Memory story. I found a fan website years ago that got really deep into the theory that there’s a Dream Theater Universe that connects all their songs and albums. Some of what was being discussed really seemed to make a lot of sense but that could be because the lyrics are so well written that anyone could read several interpretations into them. If it is true that the well of inspiration they drew from is this universe where the songs and characters are connected that just convinces me that not only are theses guys one of the most talented bands ever, they border on genius. It could all be fans reading too much into it but I is an interesting thought to say the least.

Best reaction to this song and not saying this because I requested this. In the same good tradition of linking topics from one reaction to another: ofc there are many controversies regarding some riffs they used in certain songs but even if it's true or not what they touched they turned in gold. Not sure if you already reacted to anything from long awaited latest John Petrucci solo album. In a fascinating and most well achieved melodic track from that album-Temple of Circadia-there is a riff section that is reminiscent of Sails of Charon by Scorpions, the track that you guy reacted to and for which I made the link with Home. I can't help myself 😀

James Labrie's voice was damaged in Costa Rica. He contracted food poisoning and injured his vocal cords from violently vomiting. Not exactly the best conversation to have but I didnt think you knew about that, That being said his voice was always a little grateing but the band waited an eternity to find him......had he not joined prior to the Images and Words I doubt we'd be having this conversation. Great reaction......great album this was them with all guns blazing. This album was a bit of a crossroads for them. After Failing into Infinity was recorded the band was under tremendus pressure from the record company. They almost disbanded, however much like Rush did in 1976 with 2112, Dream Theater handed the record dicks a concept album. The album and tour put Dream Theater on the map . Never again did the record dicks have an opinion of the next DT album. they simply handed the record dicks a completed project and went on tour. ok Good night and stay safe... Jack

Loved this, never heard of them before. You've compared Yes to them, and you were spot on. I had to google their influences, and here's what I found: "Rudess says his influences as a keyboardist are Keith Emerson, Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz. His favorite musical artists and groups include Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Autechre, and Aphex Twin." Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz were both keyboard players with Yes. In the 70s when Yes & ELP put out albums at the same time there was always the argument between Yes & ELP fans of who was the better keyboard player...Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. Dream Theater was a great find....Thank you! Keep making videos!

You guys may need to have a Watch Party for the Live Performance of the whole album :). Was blessed to see that Tour (and I was working at Tower Records at the time the original "9/11" version of the cover of the Live Album came out, and the Elektra promoter gave me a copy for creating a Display for it and "Six Degrees", before they changed it to the _non offensive_ image). Nick, you may want to do a Reaction vid in c/o Lex, to hear the track off _"Images and Words"_ - "Metropolis-Part I: 'The Miracle and the Sleeper' ". Even though at the time, there were no plans to do a "Part 2", as the Wiki page entails: "Fans had previously requested a sequel to the first part of the song "Metropolis-Part I" from Images and Words, but the band had not yet been able - nor had they originally intended - to make one. The name "Part I" was added by Petrucci as a joke".

Ok, second to the last note.... There are No Rules here. You make them up as you go. KZbin has no Format and the other reactors on here do just about anything they want, so I say go fur it!. If you want to play a whole album side feel free. I see others doing it, so you're more than welcome. On a semi-final note, Everybody loves you guys and you can almost do no wrong, so just being honest is exactly what we want. And Nick, with your knowledge of a lot of music on top of being a musician you cover pretty much all the areas. Keep up the great work you two.

Thank you SO much for your support! We try to be cautious because we literally just got another copyright strike (after 3 the account is deleted). We have 2 right now, but one under dispute, so hoping that gets resolved soon! We appreciate your kind words and constant support; it’s so heartwarming!! Sending peace, Lex. :)

Also, I can't wait until y'all listen to some Enslaved. Space rock meets Viking metal. I get the sense you guys don't do the extreme metal, which is fine. I still think you'll find plenty to enjoy in Enslaved's recent material. "Sequence" is quite a fascinating ride. "Storm Son" is my personal favorite. "Distant Shores" is straight modern prog with no extreme metal, if you want to start there.

This is an amazing Dream Theater track! I'm only a 'casual' DT fan so I hadn't heard it before thank you. I believe I own only two or three of their cd's plus one live dvd. I did catch them live in 2019 and they were awesome! Have you ever seen the G3 live dvd? Crazy good! How does JP remember those complicated pieces he plays? It's funny that Lex mentioned DT vocals. That's where I have trouble with them. Sometimes, James' voice is not pleasing to my ears. Although I thought he sounded great on their 2019 album "Distance Over Time". - Have you two ever listened to the band Alter Bridge or the band Tremonti? Two of my favorites.

I highly recommend reading the lyrics from the cd jacket and listen from beginning to end. James has his problems but not on this album! He changes his voice to fit the characters perfectly. You can also see past and present in the story. One of the greatest albums of all time. I saw this live in Phoenix at the legendary Celebrity Theater....in the round.....will never forget that experience! Savor the album, story and music. Also....they left the end wide open to the listener to figure out how it ends....genius.!🤘

Hi. Just started viewing your channel last night, I enjoy your music selection. One band. I like turning you younger reactors on to is Steely Dan, the absolute best studio band ever. They never had exactly the same line up of musicians on any two songs on a given album, which made for a very eclectic sound. A good place to start is "Kid Charlamagne" off "The Royal Scam". It contains a guitar solo by Larry Carlton that is widely acknowledged as one of the best ever recorded.

It's definitely the best song on the album and one that you can listen to on it's own (and I can't really say the same for the other songs on the album unfortunately). It's about having the full package however, so I would recommend the album as a whole before I ever recommended this song on it's own. If you're gonna listen to one of the tracks on their own however, this is what I would pick.

@@sandyferati6625 Haven't had the pleasure, but I have some issues with James in a live setting and all the times I've seen them live (besides the Live Scenes From New York show) he's been rather disappointing🙂 In the New York show he only has one weak moment, during A Change Of Seasons, and nails the rest. Every other show I've seen he's been, as I said, rather disappointing, but hey, that's just me👍😀

@@troillmainn London Scenes he has no flat notes at all. He sounds fantastic! I saw the show live 4 times - and in London. London was the best....Although when I saw the show in LA, Home was the best musical experience ever. It was the 2nd show of the tour and really was waaay too loud. But, when Home started, the whole crowd was standing (and even with the chairs we felt squished - the great squished feeling of a concert!) and then started to move as one, like a wave. It was something I won't ever forget. Back the to London show. OMgosh, Beyond this Life, Through Her Eyes, Finally Free...just sooo good. If you haven't got the blu-ray, you should. It's beautiful and won best live album (not sure from who, rock something, guitar something, whatever)

You two really need to check out the band Jinjer. I'll only say that they are a progressive band from Ukraine. I'm a 54 year old musician and they are my favorite band from this century. I saw them on their first headlining tour of the US in the fall of '19. Among the best live bands I've witnessed. I'd recommend Teacher Teacher official vid. I'm a new sub btw. Cheers! 🍻 FYI , your views and subs will go way up if you choose to go on a Jinjer journey. 😎

I remember hearing 46 and 2 from Tool for the first time on the radio. I got excited because I thought it was Home by DT because of the similar bass line at the beginning. But then I was like this is not DT. I found out it was Tool instead of DT. It's still a good song though.

DT are super cool (Portnoy is one of my Favourites) Speaking of origins of Said riffs... Play her '5 minutes alone' by Pantera or 'walk' or Anything by them or megadeth & she won't mention CREED again - but I only heard creed a couple of years ago & it wasn't that bad. (Not a hater) .also Check Out Alan Holdsworth Beautiful solo's on 'A Kinder Eye' by Level 42 , and also on 'She Can't help herself' both are Buried in the track but on ear phones loud you'll enjoy.

Check out the band Mastodon and their song Oblivion from their Crack the Skye album from 2009. Phenomenal band, also very progressive and heavy but completely different than Dream Theater. Very original group of musicians, with 3 different singers in a band. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱 . Love the channel.

This song, 'Glass Prison' and pretty much all of the 'Train of Thought' album are their best songs imo. I'm not massively into music thats overly progressive and prefer heavier/rockier stuff. When they do those type of songs its awesome. And props to Guthrie (Govan) too! He taught my brother at the ACM Guildford back around 2004 before he was known (pre KZbin obv). Been following his career ever since those days when my brother would come back home and gush about this tutor/teacher called Guthrie. I love my Petruccis, Satrianis, Vais etc, but Guthrie is the GOAT.
