Not that all the gifts is "fake" or "cursed" The horses are untrained. The gold is red gold, small amount of gold and mostly copper. The silk shirt, is made of spider's web, hence to fragile to use. The the mills are between two islets, hence under water, etc.

An amazing song whose meaning is shrouded in the mists of time. The “troll with the false tongue” is a demonic being tempting Sir Mannelig in a way reflecting the temptations of Christ in the desert. Wealth, power, worship etc. The troll has no connection with humanity so forget the “class distinction” idea (the troll has wealth and power beyond this world). I think the part about “ getting rid of my torment” reflects the theme of setting her soul free if Sir Mannelig can be tempted to give up Christianity and take the troll’s place in Hel (or Hell as we spell it). The unbridled horses were the property of Frey but the troll has the power to confer them upon Sir Mannelig presumably without divine retribution. The sword “giving victory however you fight” is a relative of Excalibur. Does anyone know the significance of the stones of red copper and the mills? This song like the epic poem Beowulf is reflective of the time when Christian and Norse lore coexisted. Thanks for reading.

I don't think the "class distinction" interpretation can be dispelled that easily. From a materialist point of view, "wealth and power beyond this world" *is* a mythological metaphor for a wealth disparity that has grown so vast that the lower classes cannot even properly imagine the lives of the upper classes anymore. Now for the record, I actually don't think that's quite what was going on in this song, at least originally (to me it seems to directly reference the conflict between Christians and Pagans during the centuries of Scandinavia's gradual Christianization), but trying to just dismiss the idea that a mythological tale is allegorical simply by refusing to take it any other way than literally is still a fallacy.

I loved this. When I first heard the song, I imagined Mannelig completely disgusted, but here it seems he is doubting. He almost kisses the troll. Thats old mythology to you. If by troll you just mean an uggo woman, then you’re kinda lame, uggo women can have gifts to give aswell. Fantastic job with a fantastic tune! ^_^

Wow! Fantastic! As a Swede I must say that Chris sings almost perfect Swedish, any less could be attributed to some dialect or just old Swedish pronunciation. I really need to pay attention before I got it that the singers weren't Swedish. And Markus was almost as good. It could even be argued that a very slight german accent makes the performance even better, due to how medieval Swedish was influenced by German. Trollkonans häst var av en intressant sydamerikansk karaktär. 😀

For information. Garmarna did not do the original version. The tune itself goes back a couple of hundred years. This version was first written down 1877, but it had been around for centuries before that. However, as with so many tunes popular among the commoners instead of the nobility and church, it had not been considered worth writing down before that.

Really cool concept and I applaude you for the great work put in to this! ^^ I can't help but to think that the original meaning with the song is lost in translation a bit though, wich is sad. The song is about a regular woman who tries to get a young man to marry her. But she's a pagan who believes in the norse gods, in a Sweden that's been introduced to christianity these people were called "Bergatroll" or Mountain troll in english (so it doesn't really mean a literal mountain troll). If she manage to marry a christian man she will be accepted in to the society that she's otherwise excluded from. But the man wants nothing to do with her pagan ways and refuses. Don't get me wrong! Didn't mean to come here and bash on the work you've done, it's still an awesome video :)

@vickeflikka8 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Velardez Necken (or Näcken as we say it in Sweden) is a sort of water spirit. He likes to sit close to water (like lakes and rivers etc) and play his violin. His music is said to be so intensly beautiful that you're drawn in by it. When you come closer he'll talk to you and try to lure you closer and closer until he drags you in to the water and drown you. Some also say that he takes your soul and either eats it or takes it with him to his underwater kingdom. There are some things written about him on wikipedia (the english pages) if you search for Näcken or Neck! ^^
