P.S. My favourite castles are Schwerin Castle mostly for the outside. It`s a`Traumschloss" - "Dream Palace" with beautiful Gardens and Restaurants. The interior is mostly a Galery of portrait paintings, jewelry and nearly to no old furniture to view. And the other one Is "Wartburg" which translates to warden`s castle. It`s where Martin Luther was hidden from the emperior and Catholics and translated the New Testament. The interior of the castle is very good and there is many old things to explore. Nice reaction like always btw.

The special thing about Neuschwanstein Castle is not that it is so old, but that it is so new. It was built between 1869 and 1892 by order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the neo-Romanesque style. Medieval knights' castles served as the architectural model.

Schwerin Castle is now the parliament building of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There are some federal parliaments in Germany that are located in castles or near castles, as in: Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg) Mainz (Rhineland-Palatinate) Wiesbaden (Hesse) Hanover (Lower Saxony) Potsdam (Brandenburg) Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt)

In German we distinguish between „Schloss“ (palace) and „Burg“ (castle). In the video, he kinda mixed it up. The video said „the most beautiful castles“ but there were also Schlösser (palaces) included. For example Neuschwanstein, Heidelberg, Drachenburg, Schwerin,… are Schlösser (palaces) and NOT Burgen (castles). They actually don’t belong in this list. And they deserve their own video. Cuz there are plenty of Schlösser (palaces) in Germany that are actually prettier than the castles. The difference between Schlösser and Burgen: Schloss (Palace): a building commissioned by the sovereign or other members of the nobility. It served as their representative residence. There are usually a gardens in the back. They were built in the renaissance or baroque era. Burg (castle): fortified complexes with walls and towers that were often inhabited by knights or noble families. They are usually located on mountains so that they could see all around them. They were built in the Middle Ages

Honestly, I can’t stand this. Everything should be state owned rhetoric. For example, Burg Elts. This castle is in the ownership of the family since centuries. They maintain it and only a small part is the private residence of the owner family. The cost of the maintenance is also carried by the owner so where is the problem?

Hello you TWO Dears, In times gone by, the Castles were something like Police stations, they held up the law and were meant to protect the rural areas around those castles, OK, I am sure there are better ways to explain this, but hey its just me. The surrounding people in the area payed in naturals, like food clothing and so on. In dangerous situations, those people would seek shelter in the castles and would benefit from the storages there (food and clothes). But as usual there are always bad apples in between, like evil counts etc.. But the principle stands. The Palaces were for representation and often also for administration, as you see bureaucracy is very old. I hope I could help a little bit, understanding why we had so much of those buildings. You two, care for your dogs, be safe and healthy. Your Elmar from Germany

That's true (although there have been many translations into German before), but I think this is always about the castles and not their more or less famous residents. In addition, Luther is more of a German (Protestant) hype and otherwise not that well known worldwide.

Germany has most castles in the world and even more if one adds the castles created by the Frankish Empire and later Holy Roman Empire - then you have over many parts of Europe additionally created castles by Germans - also the biggest one (Malbork castle, now in Poland - created by the Knights of the Teutonic order back then). The 'longest' castle is btw. the Burghausen Castle in Germany. Some castles got recently more in focus like the 'Marienburg castle' close to Hannover due to the world wide Amazon Prime hit 'Maxton Hall' (the Maxton Hall school took place there). Another one is the 'Rothestein Castle' which was shown in the video of Electric Callboy ("Everytime we touch" video). A famous castle which is not spectacular and partly a ruin but a world famous story is the 'Frankenstein castle' in which a real Frankenstein dynasty lived for several hundreds of years plus an alchemist who indeed seek for the Elixir of Life. Its in the state of Hessen. Mary Shelby travelled there back then and got there the inspiration for her famous novel 'Frankenstein'.

By the way renovating castles is insanely expensive. The state does not really want to own them because the money of the visitors barely gets even with the running costs. For the real big ones just getting a new roof can costs 100s of thousands euro. Same for windows etc. And not every castle draws that much visitors. Best wishes from Lichtenstein we are only about 35min away from Hohenzollern castle.

The whole list is quite South and West Germany biased. Only three castles are outside that region, Glücksburg, Wartburg and Schwerin. As mentioned before, most of the castles in the list were remodeled in the 19th century or newly built in the 19th century. For my taste, they are too Disneyfied to be worth my visit, and especially Neuschwanstein is a modern building with a romanticized shell, made from bricks and reinforced steel. I would call it a fancy MacMansion, not a castle.

Many castles you have seen, are originally from the 18th and 19th century neogothic and neoromantic. They have never been used to protect the people from enemies. They were built for repensentation and filled with nice rooms. E.g. Lichtenstein Castle was built for Hunting. The original castle was built nearby and you can hardly find the ruins in the forest. My favourite the Meersburg Castle is missing.

many castles were actually already at medieval time destroyed or re-newed. many were already back then for all kind of reasons built, also for romantic and/for prestige, not necessarily to defend. and most castles/fortresses were actually at first build with 'wood' before they turned to more stone (kind of since the 10. century). another aspect is that castles/fortresses which had defending purposes changed their shape when canons became a thing. they now got this star-like appearance (not anymore just one round or quadradic wall around). they also avoided higher constructions and the walls became lower. additionally often soil was integrated - all with the purpose to take out most of the energy of canon balls and/or give less space to aim/to be damaged. Berlin has actually (Zitadelle Spandau) a good example of such a fortress. But there are many more ... another often used constructions back further back was to use temporary fortresses/'castles' usually created with wood and/or loam and straw. usually just a round circle in which ppl could flee temporarily and/or some soldiers could fight from/be stationed.

Why are things like this still privately owned? The answer is simple. Because families have built and maintained these castles and palaces over centuries and because we in Germany have not had good experiences with communists, socialists and national socialists. The socialists and communists in former East Germany let everything fall into disrepair and it cost billions to repair everything. People with your mindset are not welcome here, so stay where you are. I have never heard such idiotic comments about films about European castles and palaces as you have. Get some culture first before you judge things you don't understand.

Who is gonna tell him that East Germany was never communist. I love when Capitalist try to teach others about communisms, as if they had any clue what the term even mean. Little hint for you: Not a single country is Communist as we speak, not North Korea, not China, not Venezuela, none of them.

@@MaxSujyGermany There were still communist parties and movements in germany" Karl Marx was born here and wrote his books! Most of us know that real communism might be a great idea that died on the doorsteps of socialism. We´ve seen East germany, Cuba, China, North Korea and many other countries that have tried and still even try to reach the "paradise" of Communism, but most of them failed while capitalist countries prosper and grow. Don´t get me wrong! I am NOT an advocat for Capitalism!!! I see its flaws and destruction it generates!!! But to prove a point you have to deliver evidence and as sad it might be-Capitalism has saved and rescued far more people from poverty than Communism ever has to date. Yes! "We", the rich countries destroy our planet, Millions of people work their asses off and still live in slums without health care, but at least many of them can drink a coke and wear an adidas T shirt, have access to drugs or can watch international football in their neigbors shed which is way more above what a rice farmer in China or a taxi driver in north korea could ever achieve.

The problem is that the English language does not distinguish between "Burg" and "Schloss". In the English dictionary, both are listed as "castle" or a lock for "Schloss", which is a bit unfortunate. "Burgen" were used for Defense, the training and accommodation of knights, mercenaries, and squires, whereas "Schlösser"(plural for Schloss) served as representative residences for the high nobility.
@frankschrewe4302
@frankschrewe4302 23 күн бұрын
There is a distinction in the English language: A "Burg" is a castle or a fortress, while a "Schloss" is a palace or a manor - depending on its size. 8 of the "castles" presented aren't castles but palaces.
