it was luck, but it was also the luck of both of the subs he made in the semis and the final. so i dunno i think he should stay. also, if he hadn’t had played foden at the start of the tournament, the media and fans would have been absolutely on him because he had a phenomenal season. but palmer was much better in that position when he subbed on, and it was only after they were already in the tournament that everyone saw that.

Bellingham's tournament is a myth. He was knackered, petulant, spent a lot of the time complaining, holding onto the ball far too long overall, not impacting play as often as he could, either slowing the game down or trying to be Maradona at every occasion. He had that one overhead kick, but should have really been whipped off 20 mins before that.

Looked to me like a player who has had a very long season and was trying to adapt to playing with a far less impactful player - Foden. Foden has licence to roam at City and is brilliant for them. But too many times he was out of position for England, often playing in the pocket of Bellingham, which made us very narrow in the first few games. Jude had moments which gave us chances. Over head kick and set up the goal in the final. More than the rest of the lads can say. We go again.

It's widely known Jude has the messiah complex and isn't well liked in the England camp or at Dortmund. He only talks to Trent and fakes a lot of his emotions to gain positive publicity. Hence why in group game 2, the players refused to pass the ball to him as much as possible,

Somebody no one is talking about is Gordon. He came on vs Slovenia and looked absolutely amazing. Called Southgate out for his BS then never saw the pitch again. Only natural LW on the team and doesn’t play all tournament made no sense. Looking for a partner for Rice when you have a great box to box midfielder in Jude yet insist on him being a playmaker at CAM or LM. Gordon, Palmer, Watkins all should have started for England based on form and tournament play yet all saw the bench for most of it. Southgate has shown he doesn’t have the gall to say hey we got to change, showed it years with Maguire as well. Hell if Maguire was healthy we wouldn’t have even seen Guehi who has been the best defender in the tournament imo, saving Stones numerous times and playing out of the back phenomenally well.
@TheFragilityOfIdeas

I agree on Gordon and Stones. When it comes to Guehi, in general yes, he was great, but I can think of two goals in this tournament where he was slow to track the man, including the last goal in the final, where really it was within his ability to get infront of the man. Fatigue? Not sure, but it was needless to concede that goal.
@dlo11794

@@TheFragilityOfIdeas last goal of the tournament for me is on Stones, he’s not checking his shoulders at all and should been cutting out the passing lane but just stood there. Guehi 3 times that game caught players Stones just run right behind him, and just couldn’t get their for that last goal. Bc if you’re Guehi you can’t get on the opposite side of the runner in the game bc what if he floats the ball back post then the player has a free finish from there as well. If Stones just runs back he clears that ball easily all day and Guehi has any cross that comes in back post. Asking Guehi to block both a cross on the floor and in the air is impossible

I don't get the argument about "look at what Southgate has achieved, got England to x-finals". How do we know that another manager couldn't have done the same given the same squad and competition at the time, or similarly could have actually taken England all the way in any or all of those?! All we can do is look at Southgate's decision making and tactics. He just got so many things wrong. He didn't look at any data or rationale or adapt to any oppositions style of play. He just had his favourites and stubbornly stuck to the same formation and people again and again. I will say he got his defence set up well but he has no idea what he is doing with the rest of the team. I don't want such a stubborn leader. With Foden, Kane and Bellingham essentially playing on top of each other most games we were effectively playing with 2 men down...brilliant managing /s So for me, Southgate out.

The stat about Kane having ONE touch in the opposition’s box in BOTH finals is insanely damming. We scored 3 goals in the QF, SF, and Final after he was subbed out. He definitely stifled the attack in this tournament by constantly dropping deep and wanting to be quarterback. So frustrating. Also alarming how many times they had to go behind in games to wake up and go for it. And then retreating again once equalizing / going one goal ahead. They did that against Slovakia. Went 2-1 ahead and then sat back and invited Slovakia to attack again and they had a really good chance to equalize the game in the 2nd half of extra time. All 7 games were just moments and living dangerously and riding our luck.

I've heard noone mention the contrast between Eng at the 2022 World Cup vs 2024 Euro. We played excellently at the World Cup, attacking dominant football just unfortunate against France in the quarters. This tournement our performances were awful. I think a major factor was Bellingham played next to Rice in 2022 and that let us have more control and another attacker up top. This whole tournament our press was awful and we never used a left winger! The balance was all wrong the whole tournament. Southgate didn't know his best starting 11 he kept changing who was next to rice and played Foden and Kane who were awful all tournament, neither are big game players like Bellingham and Palmer. Kane always half pressed it was awful, I never saw him leave one on a defender he was trot over to them andstand off them. That's probably the biggest difference between Spain and Eng is they got man to man, gave us nos room to breath and we stood off them and allowed them to play their game which is poor management. Southgate bottled it and he needs to go we need a serious manager who will get us over the line playing attacking dominating football.

I don’t buy the argument that just cause Spain pressed England they had to play long balls. Every outfield player on that England side other than Guehi plays for a side that dominates possession and are capable of playing through a press. Yes it’s risky but at least it gives you more of a chance of taking the game to Spain than just pumping it long to 2 small wingers and a striker that can’t run or jump anymore without falling over.

The focus on Individuals, and letting players loose and taking the shackles off is nonsense. England are poor in and out of possession. We don’t have any build up play and the cohesion is pretty much non existent. There’s no structure, our players are not encouraged to play the ball into tighter areas and/or the players that are under pressure. It’s garbage possession side to side to pad the stats. All the best teams have the ability to move the ball quickly to move an opposition out of their shape.. We’ve relied on individual moments of quality that won’t win you a tournament.

Well it is on the manager as he makes tactical mistakes that cost games. He got middlesbrough relegated after almost a decade in the top flight. There are some really good players, in fact some are the best in the world like Jude, Kane(on his day) and Foden. But for England, Southgate literally made all these players look average at best and were lucky to get such an easy draw to the finals. I mean England this tournament only won 2 games in regular time out of 7 games yet made a final Put it this way, Spains top 5 G/A players in league season this year had 37 Goals and 33 assists (Morata, Yamal, Nico, Olmo, Rodri). While England top 5 G/A this season had 112 goals and 42 assists (Kane, Foden, Palmer, Saka, Jude). This isn’t count either the likes of Watkins or Gordon who had double digits in goals and assists this season as well. Pickford had a couple of good saves. His playing out from the back together with his back four is poor.

Pickford is decent but not sure how he's getting the praise here His distribution long was one of the reasons why the team struggled in games The entire team can play from the back but instead he (or he did so under instruction) kept going long Him, Kane and to a degree Foden all caused England more problems than the opposition in most games

My biggest disappointment with Southgate. 8 yrs No progression with his management/ game tactics. No matter how long post tournament debrief is the management team will not concede they got it wrong from the 1st kick off.

Not really a fan of Pickford because of the way he carries on sometimes but credit to him in going to 6 clubs on loan whilst at Sunderland. I presume he did them when he was quite young which could have finished most players. But he came through them. Respect as the kids say.

That's the thing with Southgate, once you look back at his time and see all these finals, semifinals, quarterfinals that England reached under him, you'd think he has done an amazing job. But just like we saw in this Euro, even with lots of talents and luck of the draw, England beats the teams they're supposed to beat, and lose to the first proper team they face.

I don’t believe Jordan Pickford can’t be replaced he’s obsessed with kicking it 70-80 yards to no one when Stones and Guehi were always available and he’s too hot headed. Ramsdale would be the better option at least he can play with his feet!!!

Pickford’s kicking was horrendous. Refusing to pass the ball to his number 6s who can carry the ball up the field and choosing to lose the long ball trying to connect with Kane over and over again was tactically terrible decision making and one of the main reasons Spain dominated with 65%+ possession. Maybe it comes from the manager, but it is not 1990 anymore, the game has evolved from the long ball.

The one thing that has without doubt hurt the tournament is the four third placed teams getting through to the knockouts. Majority of teams playing for draws and killing “football”. Bring back 16 teams, 4 groups and 8 qualifiers. Sadly won’t happen anytime $oon.

Firstly Spain deserved to win. They were the best team in that tournament, by far. I felt a lot worse when we lost to Italy as I felt we should have won that. Not this one. That said I think it’s time for change. Southgate has a great record but the squad is so strong and majority of wins have been against far lower grade sides. Our strengths personnel wise are in attacking football so we need someone with an attacking mindset.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm Spanish, but I don't get the argument about Spanish players being really second tier to the English. I think this is probably just biased. Both ways by the way. If you check some of the Spanish media before the final they would tell you Bellingham and, maybe, Foden would make it into Spain's lineup.

I think the thought process should be the other way round. Kane doesn’t suit the system and so shouldn’t be played. Watkins did and so should have been played more. Given the wealth of talent that can work with Watkins or that type of striker, I don’t see why the team should be sacrificed to find a place for Kane. I take nothing away from Kane and his past achievements but he can’t remain the talisman when the natural development of the team around him are going in another direction.

I don't understand the surprise with Spain, they won nations league last year. Women's senior spanish national team dominates, young levels are doing it too, both ucl and wcl winners have been spanish teams this year, I mean messi was brought up there... We should be giving more credit to spanish football.

Can’t talk about Pickford without mentioning his terrible long ball distribution. Yes he’s a decent shot stopper and decent at penalties but his aimless pumping forward of long balls needs to be analyzed. Even Watkins threw his hands up at one point with one of the balls sailing out of play.

His record is not good, we had easy draws in those tournaments. When we came up against a decent team we saw the lack of tactics and team formation changes, favourites being picked over form players. All down to the manager. With these players we should have won something

English fans never learn, 🤣 Before the game got the best team better quality then Spain After game after being humbled by Spain, considering if Spain is more efficient in front of goal it’s 3-0 4-1 , still saying England has a better team better quality, total delusion. England had 2 half chances all game and one full one at the end. Coles goal was absolutely brilliant finish under normal circumstances that’s not a chance. Just a word of advice to English fans, lower your expectations and you won’t be disappointed. It’s delusional to think your squad is 2002 Brazil every tournament, then when they crash out you’re all scratching your heads wondering what happened 🤣

3 goals 1 from penalty is poor. At least double that to have a great tournament when you go to the final. Spain had three , four different players with more than one goal. England didn't score enough.
