Our Scariest Day of Van Life
What Happened in Central America? Snow and Curt have been full time traveling in their Sprinter Van for over 2 years and are currently van living in Central America. This video covers their Scariest Day of Van Life so far. The day started out as a typical van life travel day. Securing the van for a day of traveling to a new location. But, finding a camp became difficult because Covid has several places in Panama closed down or under curfew. So, we drove all day to find a suitable camp! And it was an epic campspot... on top of a beautiful waterfall. But, when the sun was starting to set... Snow and Curt's day took an unexpected and very scary turn. This travel couple found themselves caught in a real van life disaster where they almost lost their tiny house on wheels.

Scary stuff. Usually in vanlife videos when the words "nightmare" and "panick" are used, it's because they've lost the yoga mat or can't find fruit for their smoothies.

There were several points during that ordeal that you could have gotten angry each other's tone, but you both showed each other respect and grace and powered through the stressful situation. Awesome job, both of you. Everyone should use this as an example of working through a dangerous or stressful situation as a team.

Agree, great communication. I’d say. And I never would tell ppl they are doing anything wrong... but just to share my experience- I converted an Ambulance to an RV and never felt comfortable backing up. So I bought a “backup camera” with screen for about $80. I wired it hot so it’s ALWAYS on while driving. It’s great for full time rear view and keeping track of traffic around you. On long stretches I just turn the screen off on the dash. I have a Sprinter now and immediately ordered one for the same reason. I mounted the cam just to the right of my brake light- I can back up anywhere with confidence. I would highly recommend doing this- hit home when watching this terrifying situation- glad you guys are ok. Sorry for the long message just wanted to recommend to anyone that sees this. God bless all. Safe travels

Such a crazy experience. I’m glad it all worked out in the end. I can empathize with what happened because I had something similar happened on safari in the Serengeti. We were in a Toyota Land Cruiser on a trail on flat ground a couple hundred yards from a river when the rain came down. The Toyota started floating and our guide ordered us to climb on top of him in the driver seat. The one front wheel was able to barely touch the ground and held us in position. A few minutes later the rain stopped and about 10 minutes later the ground was already cracking under the sun. There was one short trench into the field where the Toyota sat and that was the one wheel trying to grab the ground. The drivers only comment was “that was a close one”.

I didn't read all the comments. Sorry if this is a repeat. A few thoughts. - Fortunately you were in a relatively flat area and not in a wash. So any water rise will be more gradual and with significantly less force. - if you don't have one. You may want to invest in a rear camera. I have two installed. One a standard backup camera. The second attaches to my front dash camera. Which mounts over the rear view mirror. It provides an unobstructed rear view. Plus, the dash camera records both front and rear cameras. Handy -I expect you already have a set of walkie-talkie. If not get one. Then one person can provide clear instructions from the outside. They will have a much clearer idea of the actual water depth. Good luck! Hopefully I'll be crossing into Mexico in a few months on my way to South America.

That was very astute on his part. If you have a chance, could you please share what mistakes you believe you made, and what you would have done differently? That could possibly be helpful for anyone who finds themselves in a similar place or happen stance. Ive been in a flash flood, lighting storm in South Texas and it’s scary. I was in a 10ft moving van. I made a U-turn on a 2 Lane St. to get away from the flood. You both did very well and held it together. That much water coming up do quickly is frightening. Take care

That's what we're taught by van dwellers. Always Park facing the way out! Just for these emergencies alone you are prepared. that's what I noticed was the first thing about your your van life and you were not pointing to the way that you want to get out you were just parking and enjoying. I'm glad things turned out for you. I feel sorry for the people as whose home so flooded cuz once again they had to put their life back together.

So glad that you’re both safe, kitties are ok and the van is fine. Even in the toughest of times you both lean on one another, don’t yell and work through the situation with grace.

Flash floods are freaking scary man. I was with my parents and sisters on a hike when it started raining and we had just hit the canyon. I cant imagine the panic when you are in your HOME with everything you love dear inside. Yall communicated so well. My breath was stuck in my throat watching this.

hahahahaha Was laughing all the time cause you backed up on a red car as tiny as a matchbox but seemed the owner aint panicking and as you mentioned there was a family watching over their porch watching all the so called flashfloods 🤪Theres no flashflood there...its a normal water flow since those villages there doesnt have any drainage or canals 😂 The waterflow on the road wasnt even covering half of your tires. Not the rims included just your tires 🤪 Grew up in this type of village and yes when it rains, it pours hard and the water flows over the roads 🤣

Wow you guys handled that like stone cold pros! Me and my hubby would probably have been using alot of filthy foul language possibly even divorce level 😂 Some people are just made for this type of lifestyle and whatever comes along with it. It takes a strong union and a lot respect and love but you guys are just perfect for your van life adventures!!

That was very real and exciting. We were feeling your anxiety and admire the communication during extreme and uncertain conditions. Teetering on the edge does get heart pumping. Avoid the ‘what ifs’ unless it’s to evaluate process for future situations. Glad you made it out of rising waters. It was a whale of an adventure.

A piece of advice. When in this stressful situation if ever again remember you take a second and make sure your next move has the safest way and relax. Getting worked up and rushing will just make it worse. Bless your hearts and safe travels. I hope your wife's is feeling better.
