Standing up tall and holding himself to account to all of his shipmates and becoming a team member can't be beaten. I am so proud of Rhett and I know you are as well.

I'm old, 74 and counting. At 17 I joined the Marine Corps. Did two tours in Vietnam, To this day that was the best thing I ever did on my own. To this day I'm still a Marine. I am a Blue Star mom, oldest son AF, youngest son ARMY. Oldest 5 tours, youngest 1 tour. Both have permanent service connected disabilities, both medically retired. Both have no regrets, both served with honor. Cedar, seeing you cry, saying goodbye to your oldest, made me cry for you. I cry at every parade where the flag is held high. I wanted to go to further education after high school. my parents had no money, I had no finances. I joined the National Guard and went to army basic training at Fort Knox then on to my job training. I came back to the North Dakota national guard-- 75% of my tuition was covered. after getting my bachelors degree, it allowed me to go on to medical school. Thankyou Army Best think I ever did. Became a man instead of a kid, loads of maturity with some boots up my arse for correction. Where would this country be without young men like Rhett? The most honorable choice, he just made. I'm right with Cedar, I said goodbye to my "baby boy" exactly a year ago. as he left for bootcamp and then for BUDS. Your prayers become more fervant when they choose this life. ……I was drafted @ 18 in 1970 during the Vietnam conflict 2 older brothers also drafted during the conflict one returned home from Vietnam and 40 years later passed away from Agent Orange cancer, little sister joined the Air Force right out of high school one week after I was inducted and retired after 20 years. 4 of my 6 siblings served honorably not a single bone spur amongst us. You are wonderful parents, You made Rhett a man, the military will make him a bigger man. When I got on the Greyhound bus, to go to Phoenix the first time in my life I thought any further west of our farming community I would have fallen off the face of the earth. My entire family of 9 were there to see me off….that was the first time I saw my father cry. Army vet here. When it time for him to “graduate “ from basic, go to see him “ graduate.” My parents didn’t, but went to my younger brother’s graduation. They told me later that they regretted it. Joining the military and serving my country at his age was a decision that honestly helped sculpt my life. It gave me discipline, and direction when I needed it the most. Work ethic and life long friendships. Very proud of Rhett. The fact that he came to this decision on his own testifies for true character and that off yours as well. A wonderful upbringing. Interesting the number of veterans that sub your channel. I pulled the trigger when I was 17. Dad was enlisted at the time so that made my mom two blue stars when we deployed. Rhett did good by joining the guard. He will get GI bill which helps for college etc. My parents didn’t know until I asked my dad to co-sign the enlistment contract because of my age. As an Army mom I can understand your tears Cedar. When my son was 10 he decided he wanted to go to West Point. From then on he did everything he could to qualify for an appointment to the military academy. When he was a senior in high school he just enlisted, I was so upset, there were tears that night. He did end up going to West Point and today he called me and told me he was just promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Wow knocked me off my feet, he’s just 37. I’m so proud of my son and your dear Rhett. I know he will amaze you too.

58 years ago this month, I made the decision to join the U.S. Air Force without telling my parents first. I was in basic training 5 days after I made the move. They fully supported my decision. Things were different then. It came down to me joining or being drafted into the Army. I volunteered for 4 years of my life vs. two years of being sent to Vietnam. While I didn’t go to Vietnam, I end up maintaining aircraft that were bombing over there. I do not regret the decisions that I made. The military made me a better person.

I spent 23 years in the US Army culminating in my Retirement as a 1SG in 2021. It was a tough life. Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan multiple rotations to Korea. It was 100% worth it. I still teach Soldiers today in a civilian role here in Oklahoma. Proud of your young man. You prepared him for this and he will do great.
