I can get behind all of these steps except the hops on pointe. To me, they look clumsy on the best of dancers and the feet are seldom in a flattering position. Not to mention the bended legs!

So I absolutely love a piqué manège anytime it's given. But there is one series of steps that I just absolutely love and it's tombe pas de bourrée glissade. You can literally use that in any combination and it just looks so pretty and feels pretty when you are doing the steps.

First of all, loving the Tchaikovsky’s PDD background music 🎼 ; I love all types of turns en manège ! If you add a grand jeté, even better. I know I’m probably in the minority but I love degagé turns (single, double, arms up, arms down), fouettés and Italian fouettés (I guess I love turning except the arabesque/attitude turns in the Paquita variation). I LOVE more than anything all the grand allegro jumps - there’s nothing like going downstage on a raked stage!!! Hops en pointe have always been a favorite and are definitely a restful part of a variation. However, to me, music plays a huge part on my favorite steps. If I love the music of a variation, I’ll love the steps. Renversé is a favorite of mine too but I’m picky about how it’s done. You have to move your leg all the way to attitude with exaggerated épaulement. The pas de valse and Mazurka are life. For example, in the Satanella variation you showed Obraztsova performing the chaînés, my favorite part is when she does the pas de valse.

Tour jeté en l'aire! Firstly, because we happen to have great facility with this step (why choose a step as 'favourite' if it escapes one's grasp?!); and secondly, because it is so bloody dramatic -- jumping and turning and then landing with flair! (Although, confidentiality, we perform this wonderful step better starting from our right side rather than the left, alas. But don't we all have a 'better' side/leg, especially for turns? hehe)

Hello from Copenhagen A small dose of Bournonville is always good. I think that if it is too far to Copenhagen for you at the moment, They have don a lot of Bournonville and Bournonville style at the Oklahoma City Ballet. They had a Danish Ballet Master for several years, Jacob Sparso. He is the son og my teacher in the school, but he has conciderably less hair now than when I last met him. He is very good.

How easy or difficult is it for dancers to have to adapt styles which are different from classical ballet because a particular scene, or sometimes the whole ballet, requires it? There is a captivating ballet with a distinctive style of dance called the Legend of Love (or is it just that the hand and arm movements that are different?). Loved this video and learned a couple of new steps I didn't know about :) I'm an amateur dancer and don't have a whole lot of steps in my repertoire but one of my favorites is sissonne, for some odd reason! And adagio in general (where I have lots of time to think and feel like I'm doing things properly. XD)

I’m not a dancer but it would be interesting to see a ballet where one dancer (or a set of dancers) use only some of the most favorite steps of dancers (although subjective) and then another dancer (set of dancers) only use the least favorite steps. Then those doing the favorite moves are happy/carefree and the others are very mad/disgruntled and it could be a more comedic ballet.

I love Coppélia's Mazurka too, one of the best parts of this ballet! It's funny because in French, the step called "saut de chat" is a "grand jeté", and the "pas de chat" is a "saut de chat"!

This video made my work day go by smoother. I'm not familiar with steps for ballet but I like the one I usually see done as a duet/ guide where the ballerina is in a set pose and guided in a turn. The poise to make holding the position for the extent of the turn looks so easy but so hard.

Thanks for introducing me to the "precipite", a term I never heard of before. Wondering if it is the same as a "contra temps", an introductory step before, or step "against the music"? That's what my ballet teachers used to call it. AND thanks for the long and deserved tribute to the MAZURKA! It has been a favorite of mine for many decades.

I did dance for only one year when I was little. I loved plie. I liked how there were different levels, grand and demi. I also loved practicing all the ballet positions. Although, sadly, I don't remember them all anymore. In tap shuffle step ball change was my favorite.

Oooh good one. We don’t get a ton of liberty in terms of the steps themselves, but we are allowed to play with the interpretation of the characters. There’s a lot more to it so maybe we’ll address this in a future vid!

I personally hard disagree on hops en pointe being "fun". I find it one of, if not the most difficult step on pointe. Mainly because you have to essentially rewire your muscle memory on how you're supposed to execute a pointe step, or really ANY ballet step. Almost every other pointe step is completed with either a releve, pique, or rise, but hops en pointe require you to shape your foot in a completely different way and then return to that position every time you hop. Two legged hops en pointe are fine since you have more stability, things like eschapes (probably spelled wrong). But one legged hops are a nightmare for me, and those are the ones most frequently used in variations or dances because they're more showy. Along with the step just feeling uncomfortable, I just find it to look kinda ugly... But they're in almost half of the classical variations for some reason?? Don't get me wrong, there are other steps I dislike too. But those steps I can at least appreciate in that they prepare you for other, bigger things you do in the center or at performances. Such as steps like frapppes or pirouettes at the barre, which prepare you for petite alegro and partnering respectively. But what do hops en pointe prepare you for? NOTHING! At least not anything I can think of. They're awkward steps with completely different foot work than most dancers are used to and they don't even look pretty! Anyways, that was my rant about how hops en pointe suck. Thanks for reading. 😅

I love the little cou de pied when you get down from fifth releve. I think it happens in some versions of Giselle. It is soooo cute and when you are your balance it is soooo satisfying. I also like doing failles because it really extends your line and gives you breathing time :D

Fun fact! The mezerka is a type of figure skating jump too! It's a beginner jump to learn before bigger jumps later with the same intro step.

I really like pique into any balance. Stuff like pique arabesque, pique attitude, and pique fouettés. Something about just stepping into a balance just makes me feel really happy.

As someone who studied Character Dance with some of the greats, in NYC in the 60's through the 80's, let me say right out, that the FOLK could never do Character properly. It takes a lot of ballet training to do it properly...in the best spirit of the Moiseyev Company of Moscow.

One of the biggest differences is that Saut de chat leads with a bent leg before straightening whereas a bournonville leads with a straight leg and the back leg stays bent in attitude. Hope that makes sense! We’d def love to do one on male steps 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Tour Jeté and tour endeaor? (not good with French spelling lol) and forgot what the step is called, but it's like a pivot, but you go from having your foot up in front of you, and turn to make it an arabesque.

Oh my, you just made me time travel! I didn't remember the name Mazurka, but when you showed the dancers in practice, I was instantly transported to my ten-year-old ballet class!! I watched that 1975 production of Giselle today, and loved how her skirt swung and floated. Now I know it was a saut de basque, and I adore it!
