Well done lads, you've done well on this so far. These type of remedial jobs are by far the worst (across all trades) and can be highly frustrating and demoralising, especially when you price for a certain time and it ends up taking double. Even worse is when you price work and customer thinks it's too much but really doesn't understand what is involved, nor the unknown risks once you start to take it all down. Difference is, those that are professional will still see it through to a quality finish and maintain their reputation, albeit through gritted teeth! Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing part 2.

Thanks again for another lintel video. Your videos gave me the confidence to do two bedroom windows to the rear of my 1930s house, they have the thing where the soldier course doesn't line up as well, so I did what you guys did on the house where you put blues over the French doors (and the bit of plasterboard came out so you could see down into the living room). Where you cut a brick in half and slotted the lintel inside it. Came out really well. Got the bathroom one to do next. Luckily there's just been the soldier and one course above so far so no need for props... yet. There are other windows which will need them though! All the best, and thanks again.

A friend was thinking of buying a house and wanted me to have a look to see if she could extend the kitchen, when I took a look at the building, over every lintel the brickwork had expanded because of the angle irons rusting and blowing, the whole house had like an expansion joint running right round the house, I told them to walk away it would cost thousands to repair, they did walk away, next time I was around that area they had a go at fixing it yep they repointed it and didn’t fix the problem. all because of not rust proofing the angle iron and the crack had began to expand again, plus this was evident on many of the properties on that particular small estate, private builds as usual and no proper, clerk of works, great job lads took me back to the good old bad old days on the tools, looking for my marshalltown now to help out but you’re doing a much better job with me not on the scaffold 😇

Done so many of these jobs in the Brighton area for windows companies as many houses I have worked on don't have lintels on the outside skin relying on old wooden or metal frame windows. Can be very dusty old jobs. Most of the time I have disc cut out the bricks and cleaned them off and managed to put them back in to keep it looking the same. Trouble with starting petrol disc cutter? Use primer button till airs out, choke on, push decompression button if it has one, pull over slowly- just turning over engine slowly with full throttle (some models dont allow throttle with choke) this will prime the system, once it fires by pulling slowly , take choke off and pull start quickly (Or half choke) use throttle . This works for me.

just found this video, excellent work , it's amazing the low level of some builders I used to use for that span a piece of scrap galvanised angle at least 10mm thick and 150 on a side very cheap and effective if it was totally enclosed we used galvanised pallet beams 2 of them with the ends cut off almost no deflection , the other thing I used to do was preload the lintel, you fit one end at the correct height then use a hydraulic jack lifting the other end to apply the correct preload to the beam so the structure above wasn't affected by the changes, it's a simple job to do and avoids all manner of settlement and cracking, cost £20 for a 4 ton bottle jack you just use a straight edge to get maybe a quarter inch of bend over the length so the lintel is taking the applied load and not the brickwork,

Fascinating. I assume that the bricks are under compression between the lintel and the higher rows. Not being a bricklayer how do you ensure that the upper bricks are sitting on a solid layer of mortar (without trapped air) and that the new mortar does not shrink. I assumed that you would tap in layers of slate or something to ensure that the old bricks and new bricks are under compression against each other. If you don’t over time won’t it settle and you will get more cracks? It looks rather dangerous that the heavy upper courses might collapse as you are doing the job.

@@SteveAndAlexBuild The lintel supports a triangle of wall with a base length the width of the lintel stepped up to one brick in the middle. Otherwise the loads get carried down the walls either side. I'm not suggesting the bricks can be thrown in bit they are not like the ones carrying full wall weight into the sides of the window.

I have a Stihl hedge cutter that gets used once or twice a year. After every use, I empty the fuel tank then run it until it stops and use the choke until it properly stops. That leaves no fuel or oil to clog the carburettor. It's been going strong for 25 years so I think it's been the best way to keep it happy. Cold start, fill the probing bulb. Full choke one pull. No choke nd another two pulls gets it going. Use choke as needed until it warms up. Too much priming (or choking) will flood it. Then it's game over until the excess evaporates.

It doesn’t help when the brickwork above has been frogged ( laid frog down ) as there are voids in the bed joints and this creates less suction and more chance of bricks dropping. Nice work guys.

I know it’s difficult to ask for more money but that was definitely a case of unknown or differing site conditions which most clients can’t wrap their brains around. There’s always the argument that you should have spent more time analyzing the scope but things happen and time is tight. My proposals always leave me an off ramp to exit the job until these issues are addressed. On our contracts with owners or general contractors you can’t simply walk off or delay the job so you must keep working. And keep fighting for compensation. I do admire your work ethics.

hey just a question... when putting in a new window on brick veneer... is it possible to scrape out the mortar from the brickwork from the inside of house and push in a lintel? then i would be able to remove the bricks from under the brickwork with a lintel already installed.... is this unsafe or bad work? if this is possible how would you fix the lintel in the gap? liquid nails or mortar?
