Hi Simon, driving a T3 myself (JX Engine) i once had a very similar problem after installing a new injection pump. Lots of white smoke when hitting the Gas and not very much power or RPM possible. For my problem the solution was as simple as it was silly 😅 by installing the pump we mixed up the screws for Diesel-input and -responseline. (the big screws where the diesel lines comes in and this kinda shell is fixed to the pump similar to the filter as in 05:49) Those 2 screws look exactly thesame but the input one has a much bigger hole inside to let more diesel through. the other way around there is just not enough diesel coming through to run the engine properly causing not enough power and smoke. My friend called it "the engine was starving" and from what i heard in your video this sounds very similar. So maybe you check this stuff as well as what others already suggested the timing of the pump. Since these Engines run fully mechanical problems like this should mostly be looked for around the fuel injection system so pump and injectors. hope this helps!

Hi folken!! Great to see you're so close to having Norris up and running again. It's super hard to offer any advice without seeing the van and knowing all symptoms as well as what work has been done. I think I'd start by checking the boost pressure, a gauge can be fairly cheap. I think boost pressure for an AAZ is about 1 bar (14.7 psi) but double check those figures. Also be 100% sure the injection pump timing is spot on, it doesn't take much for a vehicle to run rough because of incorrect timing. Try also listening to each of the injectors using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope (put the tip on the injector and hold your ear to the handle) see if they all sound the same at different rev ranges. Will the van rev up freely when stationary or does it still hold back at 3000rpm? I guess you and your friends will have tried most of these things anyway. I'll see if I can find out anymore information and let you know. FYI in my other Syncro I have an AAZ engine so if you need me to look at anything on that for a reference let me know.
@davidchase71663 жыл бұрын
I've also just thought, check the LDA on the injection pump, it has a diaphragm inside that controls fuel pressure depending on boost level. This is also adjustable in a couple of ways, look into it as it's quite hard to explain. Also on my van I had to have a modified throttle cable linkage on the injection pump as the original one got caught on the engine cover.

@sjors91103 жыл бұрын
Boost pressure of a aaz engine and other VW engines of this times was 0.7 bar. The best is to put the timing of the pump a little early, instead of 1.00 0.97 this will let the engine run a little more smooth.
@gelbercastillo55583 жыл бұрын
Did you replace both the high and low oil pressure sensors? Both make the buzzer sound off. If after doing so the alarm is still sounding off above 1800 RPM, it’s time to check the oil pressure with a gauge. If the pressure checks out okay then it's an electrical problem. Follow the wires and consider replacing the circuit board behind the dashboard. It's unlikely your ECU is bad as others have suggested, but that little circuit board responsible for the oil pressure system can sometimes go bad. Best of luck!

The problem with the low oil pressure sensor is that it is sending a false signal because the control unit from the golf III(or pasat) isnt instaled, and the control unit from the T3 thinks its still idling altough in reality you drive over 2000 rpm

My T25 has just had the "buzzer of doom" oil pressure warning sound. After checking the oil pressure (this must be ok, obviously) it seems like it is the actual buzzer is the problem. I have disabled it temporarily (video on youtube how to do it) but will now either fit an oil pressure guage or replace the warning unit itself. Apparently, it's a common problem.

Some Diesel Engines have a max rpm of 3000. On older Diesels there is a governor inside mechanical fuel injection pump which stops over revving. In modern diesels it's done in engine mapping software. You need to check possible max revs for your engine. I am not a mechanic and dont know much about Diesels other than what I have been told. Ps you may need to change gear, ratios to suit engine. Cheers from old George

I have experience trouble shooting these things. I am not a pro mechanic but have been running and dong all my own work on a aaz vanagon for 20 years (with all it's failings and benefits). Including engine rebuilds and transmission re-gearing (for aaz specifically) .......If not air in this case, I would next look at timing... but in a deeper sense than normal... like the main crank pulley, as you probably know is prone to damage... if this happens it is quite impossible to set the timing right but would lead a much bigger issue... that of timing going so far off that pistons hit valves so don't drive it too much until you know this is not the case. It could be a turbo restriction but I kind of doubt that.... could also be a fuel restriction... you could test that with a vacuum gauge. I can certainly direct you to people who know more than I do but I would be interested to hear the full list of symptoms first.

I have the same camper, and had similar problems with my original engine. My swap was to an AHU style 1.9 l motor. I had a similar problem with my new motor too... it would idle but not run above about 2k. The AHU has a computer controlled injector pump so that is a little different, but my problem was with the pump timing. I was too far off in basic timing. I fixed that and my motor ran great... I also had the buzzer problem. The two oil pressure sensors are different, but located close together. If the wires are switched then the alarm goes off when it shouldn't. Good luck

From what I can see, it looks like your engine doesn't get the required amount of fuel at high RPMs. Since you've checked several things on the fuel supply, my guess would be a fault in the injection pump on the fuel return system. The fuel return line connects to the injection pump on its top, on a "screw" which has calibrated hole towards this return line. If it has been replaced without the appropriate hole diameter, it could be leaking way too much fuel towards the return line. Otherwise near the fuel supply, the pump also contains a discharge valve supposed to regulate fuel pressure. If said valve is stucked, it will drop the fuel supply pressure and you won't get enough fuel at high RPMs. Both work in parallel and are usually replaced simulatenously. Worth having a look maybe?

I’ve watched all your vid’s, especially because you completely overhauled the AAZ before putting it in the car. I was impressed by all the effort you guys put in to it. In the same period as you guys, i changed the 1.6d engine of my VW Caddy mk1 for an AAZ. I have a camperunit on my Caddy and the 1.6d really wasn’t powerful enough with the unit on the car. But i did not overhaul the AAZ. Just put it in. But the crankshaftbolt was one if the lousy types: it came loose and damaged the crankshaft-nodge. So i had to refit a new (old) crankshaft. Than the pump seemed to be leaking. Damn! Took it to a specialist to have the leak repaired. Finally, finally, finally i had the AAZ running then. After over two months of working on it. A lot of words just to say: hang in there!! It’s all mechanical, an AAZ, and you WILL get it running smoothly!!! (Hope that you guys will be as much surprised as I was with all the extra power the AAZ produces, compaired to the old engine. Then you know that it was all worth the trouble 👍👍👍) All the best from NL

glad to see you guys at it again .. almost .. the mechanical part is my favorite sometimes and can be the most rewarding after it's over. lol. if I remember right turbo diesel injection pumps have some electrical connectors or someway of increasing fueling when the turbo comes in and if that's not functioning properly I would imagine you would lose power then. my best guess. good luck and cheers.

On these older mechanical diesel pumps, the fuel compensator is a diaphragm valve activated by the turbo boost, similar to a wastegate actuator on turbo. As the boost increases, it adjusts the fuelling on the pump via a rod linkage to match the extra air pressure produced by the turbo. Maybe check this is working also!

Hi Simon! I could be wrong, but it could be a low power level at high rpm due to lack of air. there may be a low permeability of the air filter. When installing my AHU, I faced a similar problem - everything is calm without load, but if you add gas or increase the revs, power is lost. I just replaced the filter with a more passable one for air. It can also be a clutch pedal sensor (if there is an ecu; I still have a sharp drop in speed until the first gas is pressed). Good luck to you!)))

If you change the timing of the injektion Pump, make sure the cold start lever is pushed in all the way, before starting to move the IP. Also it could be the „LDA-Dose“ dont know the name in English . Its the little can in the back, which has a membrane inside and is connected to the turbo with a little vacuumhose. it gives the IP more diesel, when the Turbo starts building up pressure.

Is it not the turbo "blow" of valve wat is opening to much after 3000 rpm. I have had this as well on a golf 2 1.9 TD from a golf 3. When this is happening the engine starts also to smoke deu to the fact that it will push more fuel in than it can burn. Also what can be, but I didn't see it properly, that if u have used the turbo from a golf 3, it is a very small turbo, what is made for low rpm, in the higher rpm range the turbo dont deliver much extra. 2 things to solve this, use the turbo from the 1.6 TD, that has a much bigger flow. Other thing is change the boost pin; the boost pin from a golf 3 TD aaz Is a straight one, the one from a T3 of golf 2 is shaped like a triangle, therefore in high rpm with more boost it will give also more fuel. What results in more power off course. (If you need some spare parts from a TD or TDI, please contact me because I am planning to throw the engine (in the next week or so) due to tax reasons)

Do you still have the original gearbox? If so, your top speed will be much lower with the aaz engine.
@SimonBraeck3 жыл бұрын
You're right, still the stock gearbox. Don't mind that though!

Seemingly it’s fine, but I will glady do another check to rule it out. Thanks!

I see, I feel you😄 The drive up north is really long, but the north is home to some of the best places in my opinion. Take the smaller roads if you can, they are scenic and the once close to the coast lines are the most pretty. I will eventually make a guide with proposed routes depending on available time, but it won't be published before this summer... You can DM me on instagram and maybe I can provide some more suggestions!

What gearbox is your van using? 4 speed? Which code?
@SimonBraeck3 жыл бұрын
Unsure about the code, but it’s the standard 5-speed that came with the JX engine

@@SimonBraeck Thanks for your answer. One more question. Did you install an intercooler? Trying to decide which way to go about engines as I don't want any electronics (no TDI swap). 1.9td AAZ as yours or 1.9d(non turbo)

Hi, I'm sorry for your van .... buy pressure gauges because you need to know the oil pressure whenever your engine is running. Is the oil pump new? if not, try using a new one ... and the suction pipe from the 1.6 JX engine oil pump 068-115-105 / BP set of gauges imgaz.staticbg.com/thumb/large/oaupload/banggood/images/9D/D4/9f577bb6-10d2-4d2f-8d69-0e85b59124b2.jpg.webp and a new oil pump for 1.9 TD ( use suction pipe from 1.6 jx oil pump) www.motor-doctor.co.uk/oil-pump/vw/golf/golf-iii-variant-1h5/1897-1-9-td Good luck

Hope you're able to convince old & new parts they're on the same team, in time for summer & trips & fantastic videos for the rest of us!
