Join us as we go in search of Bad Frank and Nancy McCoy's final resting place in Kentucky. The adventure ends up being wild, which is fitting for who the video is about. Leo is related to Nancy McCoy which makes it even more interesting for us.
"Bad" Frank Phillips was born July 27, 1861 and Died July 12, 1898. His body lies in a grave on a hillside in a small hollow not far from the area where the infamous gun fight in the Historic feud between the Hatfields and McCoys took place.
Frank married Nancy McCoy, the daughter of Asa Harmon McCoy, after she was divorced from Johnse the son of "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Her body is laid to rest on this cemetery next to Phillips.
Phillip's ties to the Hatfield & McCoy families ran deep. He had early dealings with "Devil Anse" that went bad and he sought out revenge on the Hatfield Family in retaliation.
Shot in the leg during another battle at the early age of 37 his leg had to be amputated in an effort to save his life. That attempt failed and he died within weeks. The small hand cut stone grave where his leg was buried is only 10 feet from where he and Nancy are buried today.

Thank you, I'm in awe of the whole thing- a walking history as you do, the landscape -how it has changed so much in 2 months! ; and seeing the land is really fascinating. In Alaska we have mountains you'd probably be amazed at, but nothing like these hills and hollers. I've read about them over the years and to see them here is nearly like being there. Someday I wish to visit and travel around a bit, respectfully and as allowed. This and your other vids I've seen this far are a treasure. The saying 'never forget' rings true with you two, quyana.(Eskimo for thank you)❄️🤍

My goodness! Your trip reminds me so much of the time I was searching for Nancy Hart's (Confederate spy)grave in Summerville, WV. It took me up this dirt road full of pot holes, but I finally found her grave next to a swamp. I didn't think that I was going to be able to turn around, but I finally got out. This is a great video. Gosh, I am not only learning more about the Hatfield-Mcoys, but Kentucky's history. It sure looks much like WV in some area.

Here's what it says on Frank Phillips tombstone: "If my friends would call to mind with loving thoughts, Some kinder day my icy hands have wrought, Some gentle word the frozen lips have said, Errands on which the willing feet have sped, Their memory of my selfishness and pride, My hasty words would all be put aside."

Bad Frank Phillips' first wife was his first cousin Matilda J Phillips. They were married in 1878. I believe they were married less than a year and they had no children that I know of. Matilda was living with her parents in 1880 and she is listed as widowed. She died in 1888. She filed a law suit against Frank for abandoning her while she was sick and confined to bed. He allegedly came and moved things from the house including the mattress from the bed she was confined to and left her lying on the floor. Frank's second wife was Mary Rowe. She is listed in the 1900 census in Pike County with her children. Nancy is also listed in Pike County with her children. It would have been his and Mary's last two children, Pearl and Lee Roy Phillips, he asked about. But he did include those last two children in his will. He left 4191 acres of land in Buchanan County Virginia: "Also I will and bequeath to Pearl and Lee Roy Phillips (also heirs of my first wife Mary Philips) 419 1 acres of land laying on lower Elk creak a tributary of Knox creak, and in Buchanan county Virginia, and Pattened to Frank Phillips by the State of Virginia which is to be all they are to have of my estate."

How in heavens name did these women give birth so often. It seems like the must been pregnant constantly. I realize children in this family accumulated from previous marriage plus theirs together. My Dad came from a family of 15 as did my mother. Dirt poor, my paternal gf died if appendicitis in a wagon bed his oldest son trying get him to doctor. My father was the youngest and was 6 mo old. My maternal gm had 16 kids raised on a dairy farm. My gf was alcoholic man who was always drunk and never helped a lick on farm . Mom has such stories of his mean drunk escapes but my gm never ever said anything that didn’t depict him as anything but a saint. How did they raise 15 kids and farm as well .My maternal grand mother gave birth to two of the 15 as a 15 year old bride traveling in a covered wagon. They were going from California to Texas . My grandmother told us such stories. I loved sitting on a low stool as she sat in her favorite chair and talked with far away look in her eyes. She died at 93 . She had long waist length hair I loved brushing and putting up in bun, she also wore a corset till the day she died. My mother was her youngest, my granny stayed with me when my first child was born and she was full of practical baby advice! Shocker! You guys need a 4 wheel drive! I was biting my fingers watch you drive up to the cemetery . I believe you both are a gift from God to keep us informed of history that would be limited to few family member but you bring to entire world ❤️❤️

Is it true that some parts of the families are still attempting to keep the feud going? If so,can you please explain why that is.

Why the hell would they buryi people way back in the hills don't they have normal cemeteries Hatfields and McCoy's are all buried on hills and mountains all over the place.
@thehillbillyfiles
@thehillbillyfiles Жыл бұрын
Because they didn't use good land to bury dead. They needed it for farming and animals

Great Video,I also love History!!! Went to Pikesville and West Virginia a few years back and did some of The Hatfields/McCoy's places, Paw Paw trees, Old cabin that was used for the Court House. Very interesting stuff. But Man I think I would be a little nervous going that far back 😬 😅, What was the name of that Bed and Breakfast you stopped at and what town was that in, Love staying in places like that. Great Job 👍

Forget GPS. Get USGS Topographic maps, or even maps for pilots. These kinds of maps show everything such as structures elevation, etc. etc. And they do make good cleaning agents for tombstones. You do know, if you bury a lawyer 12 feet, deep down, they are really good people

We have cleaning stuff for markers, you need permission at historical sites, especially if it's on video. We plan to ask and start doing some of those videos 🙂 thanks for the map tip!

Not sure what I detest the most, iPhone or GPS. When I'm pulling my car dolly behind our motor home there's no room for error--can't back up. When they're wrong, you're screwed.
