never would we have thought that there is so much to do on the atlantic crossing - we lost our new mainsail in the middle of the night and had quite some struggle to get it back up - check out how crazy it can get out there=)

Climbing up the mast in harbour on a still day is not an easy thing to undertake. Having to do it at sea, in the dark!! Amazing. You got it done though!

So funny - "here comes our squall !". On my last crossing of Biscay, I stopped counting when the number got to 40 - and they were all full of wind too.
@WhenSailing
@WhenSailing 3 жыл бұрын
ahaha we had the best of times, but the squalls never caught up...somehow lucky but somehow we would have loved to get one or two - a wash down of the boat would have been nice=) really happy it did not get to 40 though=) did you manage to escape most of them or were there some brutal ones?

@@WhenSailing 'don't think so. Each time one hit, wind went from 15-20 to 30-40 and kept loading up the steering and overloading the autopilot so many times. I hate them!

Hi guys, amazing job. What caused the halyard to fail? Friction?
@WhenSailing
@WhenSailing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tiago, most likely the single strands opened slowly due to high pressure and then the knot opened...really crazy how much force is applied on the sails during the whole duration...constantly under pressure and movement during the atlantic crossing=)

but yea chafe is a real thing, we would not have believed it is that serious, luckily we had enough spare sheets and halyards with us=)

Were you hand steering all the daylight hours? How much solar is fitted and what was your daily deficit with the fridge running and autopilot? I’m trying to work out how much solar I can squeeze onto a 393!
@WhenSailing
@WhenSailing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Duncan, we were mostly handsteering with high waves and wind - then at least 4-5 hours a day - on the normal days only 1 hour...we have about 600 watts of solars fitted but the batteries here are the problem, only 200 Ah and no lithium...have to change those asap...if you plan to do a crossing put them on port side;) more sun there as all the rest gets mainly blocked by sails etc...=)

@@WhenSailing I’m in the same position... I know I need a bigger house bank of LiFes, but it’s such a big job to replace everything all at once, to ensure reliability... alternator/regulator, belt & pulley, B2B charger, Big inverter/charger, battery monitoring, and that’s without the cost of buying the cells/batteries! Good luck!
