Wow, I feel lucky to have jumped across. Don Juan looked terrifying. We had it rough here but talking to friends who stayed on the Baja side, it was pretty intense. One friend recorded 80kt gusts in Puerto Escondido. Another friend on Arpatas was up in San Felipe on a dock. He thought he was going to lose his boat as the docks started to lift off the pilings. I have to thank One Life for the footage catching me on my E ride out on the front line. Redemption made your edit at 12:05 and 14:04. A little info on that monohull. Within a week it was floated again, dragged off the shore and hauled out. Apparently this was the owners third time across the shallows. The catamaran was also pulled off the beach within days with little damage. Great vid.

Hurricanes are scary stuff, it was nice to be able to secure that slip. The footage that Brooke and Gary supplied was awesome. My cyclone anchor was a sixty pound Manson. Many people laughed at it, telling me that half that weight was more than adequate. Maybe it was, because that was what I used as a stern anchor or leading hook in a tandem set, another thirty pound Manson on ten millimetre short link chain and 15mm nylon. I went through three cyclones and one was a category 4 plus--and I never dragged at all. Big anchor, one hundred feet of half inch short link chain, a thirty pound kellet and another hundred feet of 20mm diameter nylon hawser threaded through high density polythene hose as it passes over the bow roller. Nice easy set up, and with a stern anchor set downwind, pretty much bomb-proof. All one had to worry about then was other vessels adrift and lightning, and I had protection for that. Mast head anemometer stopped working at a wind speed of one hundred and seventy miles an hour--but I was sheltered in an estuary lined with mangroves, good sticky mud holding...

Glad all of your Buddy boats held the line. Last night there were winds 🌬️60-99mph peak on land in CA with the atmospheric river events. Can't imagine being in a boat 🥴. So would you recommend a Saber 36 CB as a cruising boat or would you choose a different boat if you had to choose again?
@CalicoSkiesSailing Жыл бұрын
Thats a hard question to answer in a nutshell for a lot of reasons, one being that we didn't buy this boat with the intention to cruise, that developed later. We can say that this boat is very well built and we would buy a Sabre again to cruise with. This specific boat did not come with any cruising systems, we added them all ourselves. If we were to buy any boat again it would be with the intent to cruise and we would probably look for one with many of the systems installed for that purpose rather than look to instal them ourselves (mainly because thats cheaper). If we had a lot of money to buy another boat right now we prob wouldn't because we are very happy with the build quality and sailing performance of our Sabre. In the future if we choose to buy another boat it would most likely be a boat purpose built for specific purposes for example aluminum and insulated for cold latitudes (not that we're planning or want to do that but thats an example of the type of reason we would buy a different boat for). So in other words we are very happy with our boat overall and would recommend it if you could find one with cruising systems installed.
