The early days of aerofoils did detract from the otherwise great appearance of F1 cars. At the time, no-one had yet thought of making them far lower, which was the best solution. Anyway, back in 1969, we saw the high aerofoils as the new normality. Even my billy cart had one.

Yes, they were used in Can-Am series since 1967! Cheers!

Interesting feature about the early days of wings... which were flying off the cars quite often back then, resulting in several frightening accidents (as had happened with Hill and Rindt in the previous GP). But his prediction that wings would disappear soon in F1, was not the most accurate... 😊

No, at the time they were trying 4 wheel drive and, that, was not a success... unlike wings...

Aerofoils will be banned forever, but soon, 4-wheel drive will be the big thing for GP racing. Those predictions did not age well.

At the time that´s what seemed to be logical. Reality makes some turns that we cannot predict though...

I've always wondered if there was a lot of negative reactions at the time when wings were first added to the cars like we saw years ago when the halo was added. So many complaints about how the halo ruined the aesthetics of the cars. Have to admit those early wings were definitely not pretty.

There is always some resistance to change!

I respect the bravery of all racers but these guys were on a different level, I mean it was pretty much a given that someone was going to die at pretty frequent intervals.

It was like this - you accepted it or not. Many tried and gave up...

0 fer on those predictions I'm afraid. Who knew?

That´s how it seemed to be natural at that moment in time. 4WD was the thing they were trying to work out and wings were recent to F1 but not new in motor racing.
