Thank you for being real and showing the "real people" moments. All those "perfect people" videos make it seem imposible for real people to do this.
@ouralaskahomestead Жыл бұрын
That’s why we do it. We got tired of watching the flawless videos. We’d try to do a project we seen online and struggle and be like, why is it so easy for everyone else? Then I realized, it’s just because they won’t show the screw ups. We don’t know what we’re doing and I can’t afford to pay a professional. I might be a bit ditzy sometimes but I’m not a dumb person so I figure if they learned how to do it, so can we. Maybe someone can learn from our mistakes or at the very least, have a laugh with us.

Why would you call them out for them not showing what they may have screwed up maybe they don't feel like showing that aspect, the fact that anyone who gives it a go in Alaska is a " real person" and many who move to Alaska find out the hard way that of how difficult it can be living there as it's not for everyone who wants to try the off grid thing. The Alaska wilderness wins always. Maybe you should get a harness for your recording device then you can help out

If you have trouble with your vent leaking in the future. Replace that section of roof and use a Deck Tight rubber flashing. That was a shingle flashing. The deck tight are silicone with a small metal ring at the base that can be formed over the ribs of your flashing. You set it in caulking “Through The Roof” then put a final coat around the edge. It’s a clean fit and you won’t have as big of a hole in your roof.

Great job folks. FYI. Self sticking roof underlayment is fab. Because it waterproofs the roof until you can put finish on. And won’t tear like felt. No matter how long it take or the weather.

A good 45:25 way to install scaffolding , just add some cross bracing on the outside of the wall. Then add a 2x4 out from the wall to an upright board long enough to add a 2x4 handrail. Do that about every eight feet and add your 2”c12” walk boards. Use screws so it will come down easily. Add some scrap boards under the uprights. Just to keep them from sinking. Leave them up till your done with that side and go to another. On those side walls. I would put the scaffolding up like normal and just use a ladder for what you can’t reach. This sure is an adventure for you’all. I sure do envy you. Oh one more thought. The dogs will need bug protection. Farm stores carry Permethrin. Just mix it with water in a spray bottle. Just use a rubber glove and spray your hand and just rub it on their ears and nose. If you get a tic. I like to put them on tape. Before throwing them away. Then they will never get you again. Good luck. Later
@ouralaskahomestead Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great idea! We’ll have to try it on our shop build. The one good thing about the short summers in this area is, no fleas or ticks! People do on rare occasions find one so I shouldn’t say “none” but it’s very unusual and they ask you to send them in for testing. Also, there’s never been a case of heartworm that initiated in Alaska, only dogs that come up with it. The life cycle of our mosquitoes is too short. The cold is good for something I guess 😉

Our fav cold weather recipe that’s so versatile is Salsa chicken! I make it in the crock pot but it works in any slow cooker or even Dutch oven. It’s just chicken breast, a jar of salsa, a packet of taco seasoning which has (1 tablespoon chili powder. ¼ teaspoon garlic powder. ¼ teaspoon onion powder. Pinch of cayenne pepper. ¼ teaspoon dried oregano. ½ teaspoon paprika. 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin. 1 teaspoon salt) and then at least one to two cups of broth or stock. When it’s done you can shred it and have it as taco meat, add more broth and veggies to make a soup, ect! This is a Texas home staple!!

WTG!! Glad to see someone with vision and gumption. In 93 my hubby and I built a log in Michigan together. (My idea) Our 2 girls were not happy with a outhouse and showers when it rained or a trip to the river at night so they hung out with friends at a campground. Took us 6 months and lots of friends but finished a month earlier then the bank expected. Lived there 16 years till he got sick, sold it, and bought a place on a river for cash. So because of that home we've had no mortgage for over 18 years.
