I started watching your channel to see/try to understand a parent “view” of having a child with special needs. I’m a special education teacher who teaches students with moderate to severe disabilities. I see the education side of children, but I don’t get to see the family side too often. I just wanted to say I have fallen in love with your family over the past year. I also wanted to thank you for documenting your journey 💕

I’m also a special education teacher! I’m a K-12 teacher at a small rural school. I’m the only special education teacher in my district! I also appreciate seeing a parent’s side to special education. I’m also looking into moving to Colorado (I have family there) so I’m curious to see how special education is handled there. Thank you for bringing a voice to parents of children with autism.

Honestly, as a 17 year old with SPD, my mum is constantly saying she wished she’d sorted my food issues when I was younger. Obviously, I’ve naturally gotten better with age, but there’s still a lot of foods I physically can’t bring myself to eat and something like therapy would’ve probably helped more. You’re definitely doing the right thing

Yessss to the squeeze bottles for learning the straw! My son’s speech therapist gave us a Rubbermaid plastic juice box that was the same idea where you squeeze it and they learn to suck. It was what FINALLY got him to use a straw back in October when he had just turned 2. Nothing else worked until that. Now he can drink out of any straw! 👏🏼 I really hope it works for Nellie too!

I admire you so much. I have 3 little boys. They are 5, 3 and 1. My husband, myself and his pediatrician suspect our 3 year old has autism. He used to say mama and dada but he doesn’t anymore. He jabbers\ baby talks occasionally and screams a lot. He’s a handful. He zones out a lot and is into everything all the time. Our oldest had a speech delay but with early intervention he’s catching up. Our middle child is displaying some completely different signs than our oldest. We are in the process of getting him evaluated for child find. I say all this to say that watching your videos gives me hope. You give me hope. I’m a stay at home mom and I struggle every single day with my boys but watching you and your family gives me hope. Hope that I can power through these difficult days and that my son will thrive when he gets the help he so desperately needs. Thank you for showing as much as you do.

it is so good you are addressing all of her needs and going full throttle with getting her help. Two of my three children are on the spectrum and are 24 & 16 now. Girls often get diagnosed much later than boys so hats off to you for realizing her need and meeting early. The feeding thing can definitely have life long ramifications if not addressed now. I still have issues with both of my and feeding. SPD is so tough.

They didn’t have feeding therapy when my son was a toddler and when it finally came about they said he didn’t qualify because he was a normal weight. All 3 of my babes are going through ABA in the bedroom too! My oldest is just like Penelope however she has a feeding tube just to give her the extra nutrients shes missing. ABA in the bedroom has been good for our kiddos, since they have high anxiety in environments. Letting them do it at home allows them to participate without having meltdowns over the environment. My youngest is in EI since 14 months and it's been helping huge.

Try using a juice box instead of the honey bear cups. If you don’t mind giving your child juice, they’re just as effective as the honey bear cup but a lot cheaper. Ok, miss princess Nellie is so cute, toddling around with those pigtails. And both Liam and Penelope babble like they are telling us stories. I’m so sorry that they have been asking you to move backwards with Nellie. But those pouches are a tremendous idea!! And a quarter of a pouch is huge next to the two or three baby spoons worth she had been doing. And they come in soooo many different flavors and combinations. A lot more than traditional baby foods. We fed miss Livvy with those. lol I am praying for you all that things level out a bit more. Just a few more weeks. And you have totally reminded me all the things I need to get settled for Serenity’s visit. I can’t wait. Love you all 🤗

Hi, I have really enjoyed your videos and hearing your stories. They help me to keep going. Nellie and my son have a lot in common. He's a January '19 baby, just like her. He's an ex preemie, behind developmentally and has feeding issues. He has a feeding tube, and we have been working on his feeding issues in therapy for a year. We are also in PT, OT and speech. Our developmental pediatrician has never mentioned Autism, but it won't knock me off my chair if that's what it turns out to be. I'll be able to handle it better thanks to your videos. You show that even with Autism, it's gonna be ok. We are still working on the feeding issues daily, especially drinking. He's never really gotten the hang of the bottle, but he does well with baby and table food. We are also going the straw route. We are currently trying the munchkin and Honeybear straw cups. My guy also hated the munchkin one, haha. Today was only day 1 with straw cups, but he figured out how to suck from the Honeybear cup. But the liquid goes everywhere as he doesn't know how to suck and then swallow before it goes everywhere AND the Honebear is NOT SPILLPROOF. Good cup, just a bit messy during learning. He'll get it (🤞) and I know she will too! We are hoping to work up to the munchkin cup and then to an open cup. We have done some with the open cup, but that's even more of a mess.
@rachelsimmons35484 жыл бұрын
Aww, man. The battle with the cups! We have a graveyard of refused cups in our cabinet. My son will only drink out of that exact straw cup that Penelope refused (the green one). They should come up with a place where your kids can test out cups so you don't end up with 5 other kinds sitting in your cabinet. 😂

Nellie is just so precious and in some ways reminds me of my son he will be 3 in September and the only fruit and vegetables he will eat are from pouches he loves the plan Banana and if we give him a veggie on first thing in the morning when he is good and hungry he will take it otherwise we are SOL. He still has never to a sip out of a sippy with a hard spout and only will use the same soft tip as Nellie we got him off it by giving him juice boxes. That helped a lot until he was getting to much juice and I tried switching him to a cup and straw so I could mix water into it and it was a struggle I thought it would never happen but I got mini stainless steal cups with lids and a silicone straw for him it took about 2 days but he finally drinks great from them he also likes everything room temperature. He is a picky eater however he does eat a variety of different textures but he only has a short list of food he likes, he is just starting to try certain new things at nearly 3 yrs old.

My daughter is one and we can't tell if shes being picky or has a sensory issue. Basically when it comes to soft food she will sometimes gag and it won't be in her mouth, sometimes she absolutely doesn't want to touch it. So she will scoop it on the floor, open and close her hands or cries. I have to make her try it with a spoon so she doesn't touch it but sometimes she doesn't like being spoon fed. She loves things like soft nuggets, cheese, spaghetti, oranges, bananas, yogurt melts, Graham crackers. She wont do puree either. She does have intolerance to milk and ice cream. But she still relies on milk. Doctor just said keep trying. My daughter has always been tiny. Born weighing 5 lbs 7 oz 18inches long. Shes now in between 20-22 lbs 31 inches long. Shes not chunky at all. Very petite and skinny. Kinda don't know what to do besides keep trying.

Has anyone read or heard that baby food is linked to autism? Many are major and trusted companies. For me, it's not real food when it sits on shelves for months and doesn't go bad. I used to make different types of stew with homemade chicken broth, puree the whole pot, store them in single-serving glass containers, then freeze them. I would use different ingredients for the stew weekly to change flavors. The baby loved it.

@OurLANDingCrew84 жыл бұрын
Penelope is more than just a bit behind, she is significantly behind. Wanting her to be able to eat baby food at almost 17 months is not “rushing” it. I get that we have been kind of tight lipped on a lot with her so there’s no way for others to know this but we are all about kids developing at their own rate. That’s why I didn’t freak out when she wasn’t walking at a specific time, I know every kid is different but where she is at is way past the “normal range”.

Hi there Steph that comment came across so wrong and is my fault for they way I wrote it and it was more geared towards my son and if I’m being honest he is nearly a year behind I just wasn’t comfortable writing that, I completely understand Nellie is different and I didn’t mean to sound as if I was comparing and I think everything you are doing with her is just perfect, she is lucky to have you and I’m sure her therapy is going to help her very much. I don’t think you are rushing anything at all your doing great things for her and I love all you are doing for Nellie and would do exactly the same if I were in your shoes, so that came across terribly wrong, what I meant was when my son was 1 yr old he was significantly behind and I felt drs were rushing him so much and some of the things he lacked in so did my other kids at that age.

100%. I definitely agree but when she was eating more solid foods, it does feel like a set back to go to the very start of baby feeding but as you said, it's going to help her more long term. It's one of those things that suck. The only way to get diagnoses when they're younger is if they're on the more severe side so it's an inbetween of "I don't want my kid to struggle more just to be heard but I do want to get them help"... it's so hard. Noah wasn't diagnosed with ASD until he was 5 and basically the doctor was forced to because of the DSM criteria changing, it is so so hard. You're doing a great job mama

When I was a baby I was fat. I literally ate everything, then all of a sudden it was like a switch was turned on and I became a picky eater. I have issues with food textures like jello is one food I can’t stand.

Hey Stephanie! You might remember me from a while back. I was taking a break from KZbin for awhile, so I missed quite a few videos. I was just wondering, what made you decide to get the kids back into ABA? If there’s a video explanation, linking it is cool too! No hate, I’m just curious-as long as you’re okay sharing, of course.

Welcome back Elena! When I took Liam out of it, I was very clear to say that it didn't mean I would never use it again for him at an older age or use it for the other kids. We decided to try to use a company here that had an amazing reputation and have an amazing BCBA who is so positive about autism and we have had great results and experience
