TALLEST Maya Pyramid IN THE WORLD? Toniná Ruins, Chiapas Mexico
Located in the Southern most state of Mexico called Chiapas the Ruins of Toniná are near the heart of the once great Maya Empire. An empire so vast that it covered most of Southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Toniná was a city of war and great prosperity, with rulers that conquered many cities including the mighty Palenque. Tonina's rulers built massive pyramids and temples aligned with the cosmos and the movements of the sun. It's people flourished for over 700 years until the end of the Classic Maya Period. They left behind their stories in monuments of stone . And the once mighty Acropolis of Toniná, (perhaps the tallest Maya structure in the world) was all but forgotten.

I how it is completed soon, I spent most of my vacations in the 1990's traveling on my own from sites in the North of Yucatan to Quintana Roo, Chiapis to Guatemala. I had an absolute obsession with Mayan civilization and still do today. I've always like the obscure sites as Coba but Paleque, Copan, Tikal and Chichen-Itza are fantastical.

Tonina is incredible in so many ways! What do you think, could it be the tallest? Even if it isn't it sure is awesome! I used "Maya" a little too generically in this video. I'm aware Teotihuacan and Cholula are not neccesarily "Mayan". Teotihuacan does have a lot of Maya influence and obviously overlaps the time of the Maya but we don't know exactly who built it, weather it was the Toltec or Totanacs. It is mostly known as an Aztec city, though they were not the original builders. In the Case of Cholula, again I pretty much lumped all pre hispanic culture into the word Maya, which is technically incorrect. Most all of these cities passed hands from previous older civilizations. Knowing that most viewers would look at any of these structures and think "Mayan" was my motivation for the simplification.

Wow! I am fascinated with the pre-Columbian buildings... How many times I imagine visiting these places on their times. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us :) . By the way, may you explain us a little more about those "donations" and how it works? I am afraid about that and your experience would be useful.

The locals set up illegal road blocks from time to time. This is especially the case on the road to Palenque. They are always peaceful but a "donation" is mandatory. We never paid them as much as they asked. For example they might ask for 100 pesos and we gave them 40. The people down there are very poor and they see it as their right because it is their land the road goes through. The government can't really do anything to stop it, so it just goes on. The best thing to do is travel the road really early in the morning and you will miss most of the road blocks because they haven't gotten up yet.

@@ExplorayDisfruta we left at 6 in the morning when driving to Palenque and only had one. Our friends left in the afternoon and had 3 or 4. The road to Palenque is really the only one that is consistently blocked. The road blocks vary in seriousness, the children often try to set up blocks but nobody pays them attention.

These donations came about because the government in Mexico spends money on excavating these sites and turning them into tourist attractions with admission fees. The admission fees go straight into the pockets of corrupt officials usually in Mexico City or the state capitol. The people in the area who live there get no money from these enterprises. So basically thousands of tourist tramp their their homes and leave. At the end of the day they are left with nothing. So what they are saying is "if you are going to use our roads and our heritage, you should in good conscience donate something to our livlehood." Remember 200 pesos is only $10 US. Not a lot of money. All this money is shared by the whole village. Eventually the villagers make enough money that they open up restaurants, tourist shops, and hotels.

What a great video! Really appreciated your actual legit historical information in addition to the regular "hey this is neat!" commentary! I subscribed 😅 I came to Toniná in 2003 as part of a day tour from Palenque and my memory is basically of pulling up to a pyramid base in our van, climbing it, and leaving. I wonder if that much has been excavated and restored since then, or if my memory is mistaken!

Yeah Ocosingo is not super safe at the moment. There has been alot of political upheaval recently with the elections that happened a few months back. I would follow the locals advice. The road from San Cristobal to Ocosingo is narrow and often blocked just after Oxchuc.
