A PARENTING GOAL of ours with TEENS

We had a day off full of errands but we're also sharing a parenting goal we have as we get more into the teen years with our kids.

I connect with my grandkids by reading the books they are reading, watching a TV show (or Hallmark movies), sports or music. They all live at least a two hour drive from me so it gives me something to talk to them about. when you can talk to them they in turn talk to you.

Those precious babies singing, it brings such joy to my heart. I love the Hallmark channel with all the Christmas movies. TV is nothing like it was when I was growing up. I also like the fact that your kids don't walk around with cell phones in their hands like most of the kids now a days do. You have such a wholesome and loving family. God Bless all of you!

All your kids are amazing but Hope and Destiny are precious. I have noticed they usually together like best friends and sisters. I also got into what my kids were into. Horse riding,color guard and band especially.

What a fun idea to spend time with Belle. One of the premiers (Nostalgic Christmas) was filmed this summer in our town of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Canada! Fake snow and all in the middle of summer on our main downtown street. It was fun to see all the cast trailers and semi-trucks full of lighting and props and occasionally the cast waiting to shoot an outdoor scene. A local gift shop was shut down and became the toy store for the month of June. Anyway. Enjoy!!

The plot of every Hallmark movie: A career woman who is too busy for love has to move to/visit a small town where a handsome local bachelor teaches her about the true spirit of the holiday. Me and my daughter always watch those movies too. We love cheesy movies. We have 8 kids almost 20, 19, 17, 16, 6, 4, 3, 1. I’m always trying to connect with each one by doing things they like. Not always easy but worth the effort.

My mom and I had a tradition of every couple of months we would stay in bed all day and watch movies. We would only get out of bed to get more snacks or for a bathroom break. We always ended it with the same movie. My mom is gone on to heaven now and gosh I miss her so much. My daughter is 7 now and I am totally passing this tradition on to her. It’s my greatest memory I have of me and my mom. :)

OMGosh! I am so excited to know about the movie checklist app. My daughter and I love watching the cheesy Christmas movies! It is definitely a wonderful mother-daughter bonding time. Now that she is at college, we plan a whole bunch of movies to watch when she gets home for the holidays. I agree that it’s wonderful to get interested in what your teen is interested. I learned that from my FIL. He keeps up on sports because that is a big interest of my BIL’s. So much wisdom to learn from our parents, methinks. Thank you for the lovely video!

Thank you for sharing! I come from a background where a mom and dad figure weren't around and now I have 3 kids of my own I'm trying to figure out what "parenting" is. So I'm constantly looking at people who I think are great moms and taking their advice because ya girl needs all the mom tips I can get lol. My oldest is 11, and will keep in mind to be interested in what's shes interested in especially as she gets older.

My mom always supported what I was interested in. She loved to tell everyone if her 16 year old wanted to go to Disneyworld every weekend instead of going out with friends, then she was happy to take me to see Mickey. I’m in my mid 20’s now and she’s still my best friend!

It really is all about bonding with your kids. I have noticed even with my 12 year old, he can quickly tell if I am interested in his "stuff" that he likes or if I am just half paying attention and going through the motions so to speak. I know more about marine mammals and pennipeds than I ever would have guessed I would know, but I have always loved the ocean so it is something that I can enjoy with him (though maybe with not quite as much zeal). He and my husband really connect over cars and engineering and robotics. You have to move towards some of the things they are interested in, but I think some parents just expect their kids to come to whatever their interests and hobbies are, and that is a mistake...especially with older kids.

For me, turning 16 and getting my drivers license was not a good thing! I experienced a lot of negative things during that year that I wish I had not. Paying close attention to you daughter is something I wish my parents had done!

I think we could have been sisters in another lifetime. I love hallmark movies especially during the Christmas holiday. My son always says, “A Hallmark movie where they have a problem but in the end kiss and live happily ever after “. Always said with a giggling smile. I agree though, always a clean and safe option.
