Up here in Montana, we were doing the same work & having to be bundled up in forty layers of winter clothes to work in. UGH! We have been working in deep snow, sloshy mud and COLD. That freak blizzard dumped about 28" of snow on us, the high winds made 4-5 ft drifts and we were out for hours in 20 plus below zero wind chills trying to get the herd moved down lower & closer so we could heavy feed & get them through this storm. What a nightmare! Made me happy to see your herd safe and sound! Hope the rest of the work goes smoothly for you too!

Good plan Mike. By grazing your pastures you are not taking nutrients out like you would be if you were haying. By feeding purchased hay you are adding nutrients by running them through the cows. You are building up your soil. In addition, look at the savings associated with baling your own hay, (fuel, wrap, time, wear on equipment). It’s a win-win situation.
@jerryodriscoll36914 жыл бұрын
Believe me, fuel net, time and wear and tear on the haying machinery in a decent crop is way cheaper than buying in hay, but yes I do agree with you about the nutrients

I cant imagine needing that much land for grazing! In my area we 1.5 to 2 acres per cow calf pair. But we get about 50 inches of rain per year and 150 inches of snow. We have cows on pasture from early May until late november. We can usually get 3 cuttings of hay per year.

Running cattle on hay ground can really help your nitrogen and phosphorus levels I would suggest doing it more often I think you’d be surprised the yield increases you can gain. Also haying your normal pastures can take away your bigger brush they don’t eat but I understand you want some to trap snow.

@farmingnodak4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of snow... light and fluffy snow isn't much moisture at all, but heavy snow adds up extremely quickly. Last year October had a massive blizzard. 2' of wet snow, really caused water issues.

Kinda interesting you mentioned the buffalo. Prime example of mob grazing working perfectly in nature. Everyone always says they can't do the Joel Salatin Greg Judy ranching style because they don't have their rainfall, but the secret in the mob grazing not how much rainfall you have but how much you keep. When the buffalo roamed the land was impacted hard for a short duration and rested long after
@NotSureJoeBauers4 жыл бұрын
@Dry Creek Cattle Co Alan Savory or Peter Andrews or many of the cattle men of South Africa and Australia deal with those same conditions. You might not have had rain but you got snow. And yes I know its dry snow and there is very little moisture but you really haven't tried to understand how the mob grazing works over years to incorporate high amounts of urine and feces on small plots to fertilize soil in a concentrated area. While the animals stamp grass and increase your organic matter in the top soil. I'm well aware that you have a moisture problem there and I caveat my response. You're free to do as you wish but the blueprint for rediscovering natures key to abundance is there.
@NotSureJoeBauers4 жыл бұрын
@Dry Creek Cattle Co I figured it would be less than half an inch per foot yes. Greg Judy just helped establish a 480 acre ranch in Cochise County Az where the stocking rate is closer to 50 acres per cow calf. Maybe keep an eye out for that project in a few years and see the difference. I've been down the rabbit hole for several years, thats how I came across this channel and I like the entertainment. Notice how I don't say "You should blah blah" but rather point out an epiphany had by a rancher on tough times to try and link to a larger idea and that is the grazing mob

Do you ever try to drill in some ceral rye in the fall so you have earlier paster in the spring? Rye grows through the winter like nothing else I have seen. Might help keep more of the melting snow in your soil in the spring? Maybe it wouldn't work there because it is so dry compared to what I am use to??

@Dry Creek Cattle Co that's true. I am not used to that extreme cold. Around here it gets to -20 a few days a year but when it does the ground usually has enough snow cover that it won't freeze unless you clear the snow off

Mike Do you own the oil wells on your property
@dougcooper60044 жыл бұрын
Most of the minerals in Wyoming belong to the Federal government. In general, to have minerals a homestead had to be taken before 1916. The Federal government kept the minerals after that. The government leases the minerals to oil companies. The surface owners have few rights as the mineral interest is considered superior to the surface rights. Most oil companies pay a small amount per year for the use of the surface. Over 50 percent of Wyomings minerals belong to the federal goverment.

This might be a silly question, but do cowboy boots have good traction in the snow? Most of us here on the east coast wear thick rubber boots with a lot of traction for snow. I just happen to think of that while you were rolling out the hay.
@vegafarms4 жыл бұрын
There’s a wide variety of soles for boots. Just as regular shoes can have a rubber or leather sole, so can cowboy boots. I guess the main difference between shoes and boots is just the upper part of the footwear and of course the shape, but what you walk on boils down to the same list of materials.
